Leveling or Gear? Empty Leveling or Gear?

Post by Delvanoc Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:31 am

I am currently trying a dex/faith build. Though I am beginning to think dex/int would be better. But either way, I feel as though it is much tougher this time around than my first toon. I guess my question is, do dex characters not fully become viable till later?
I am trying to keep my soul level within the lower ranges for quicker summonings and the like, I noticed at one point on my first toon that it was hard to be summoned most likely due to a higher sl.
Any early gear that would help with my damage output that is reletively easy to acquire? I am currently sl15 and have beat the gargoyles. Should I level or just keep trying to obtain better gear?
Thank you for responses to this! Mad love for this community!

Okay, well this is my opinion but I'll first say that in general due to the soul drop increase post patch 1.05, you'll rarely have to worry about souls and whether you have to do one thing or the other, you can usually do both happily together (as long as you don't overlevel yourself)

However, while most would say gear is the most important thing, I would disagree and say it depends on the toon. For a dex/faith such as yourself, your first major call is the 20 faith required for Lightning spear. Get that, then focus on your gear.

You won't need anything better than 20-25 faith before you get onto the four lords.

I say you can level up. Level 20s have no problem summoning for capra and gaping dragon, and quelaag and sen's anything from 25-35 is usually game. You'll find (as i did with my dex/faith toons) that you can level easily (keeping to rough level guides for each area) while upgrading your gear, as Dex builds have less of a need to upgrade their stats than their equipment.

This is compared to STR builds and INT builds, who rely on having high combat stats to be able to use their best equipment/abilities

    Hope this advice helps happy

While farming large shards in the Depths, I got summoned twice for Gaping Dragon at SL70-80.

that might have been NG+ you were fighting.

After all, it's difficult for the gaping dragon to touch you silly

    Serious basically said it all.

My advice however is to get a few weapons upgraded to +5 or +10 (not sure exactly how far you are) and experiment with dexterity weapons. It sounds like this is your first dex build and your second character? Dexterity weapons play a bit differently than strength weapons for the most part and thus your playstyle must drastically change to accommodate this change. My suggestion is to use a falcion or katana as they seem to be the most well rounded dexterity weapons. After you get familiar with those you can start experimenting with daggers, claws and other dex weapons.

I have a dex/faith build. It uses the silver knight strait sword, sunlight blade, force and emit force. The character can make quick work of most enemies in the game doing around 600 damage per hit with the weapon buffed.

If you still have your first character I'd actually recommend maxing it out and obtaining as many of the weapons and spells in the game as you can. This way you can experiment with different weapons and spells to see what works best with how you want to play.
