Re: trying something knew
Just to say (and be pedantic) the celts didn't end the roman empire, they were taken over by them, and eventually drove them out after another country/empire (can't remember exactly) weakened their power in their outer territories.
Anyways. To be accurate you'll want to use a sword that cannot stab (they fought only with swords meant for swinging, unlike Braveheart will try to make you believe), so I say the Bastard Sword is what you want.
The armour will also be light (looking at least) and as yarxov noted, bare chested is important can't recommend specifics since i don't play using lightarmour very often, let alone stuff which is barbarian-ish.
shame you can't do facepaint though

Re: trying something knew
^Bastard Sword would be better, right.
@OP, if you go Barbarian a Club would be ideal, but Celts were in the Iron age and had swords.

Re: trying something knew
Yarxov and Serious have nailed pretty much every point, I've invested a fair amount of research into the Celts, huge AoE2 fan, I wish you luck in your endeavor. I also want to point out axes and spears are a viable option as well, during that time period swords were also a status symbol and were mostly wielded by chieftains or other high ranking personal. Bows are just as viable if you wanted to make a build solo around that, or even use them as a back-up weapon. The Celts were just as good with a bow as they were with melee weapons, proved by the fact they annoyed the Roman's enough to just build a wall and stop trying to deal with them
Looking through the armor list, the pieces I feel at least imitate the Celts are Thief or Hunter bodies and hands while using the Bandit pants.

If you want to go with war paint you can change your toons color when you build your character. Look under customize. I have a couple smurfs running around lordran.

They used a dye from a plant called woad to paint their faces. Another use for purple moss maybe.

Yea it actually depends. You see, romans had a large variety of weapons and battle styles. Some of them used the eagle shield like you said, they stood right ahead of the army and used the shields to block arrows, then the normal legionaires attacks with halberds, spears, straight swords and many types of shields.

why would you not use the stereotype?
it's cooler too, though if you use the Roman-inspired turtle constantly you'll get bored far too fast

Re: trying something knew
I have two chars that are both being considered. My roamn Legionaire, has the Hard leather Armor and Helm, Chaos Partizan, Eastern gloves, and Eagle shield With a Lightning Longsword backup.
My NORSEMAN (Viking is such a dirty word.) Has bear chest, Havels gauntlets, Hard leather leggins, and Hollow Warrior Helm. his weapons are the Iron Round shield, Chaos Bastard Sword, and Dual Lightning Hand Axes.
Sorry guys, I beat you to both of these
(I'm sure someone else has builds that are similar, but if it has the Royal Helm it is NOT A VIKING )
