A very well designed 8-bit game could be very difficult, but at least it was fair. Some games were either uniformly awful or they were just OK with one or two genuinely bad levels that made me want to go on some kind of spree. There is nothing worse than enjoying a game and then coming to a level where the designer either had some kind of neurological fit or episode of extreme sadism and the game became unplayable.
In today's age, if the game has some bad spots, there's usually a change in difficulty to consider, and the pain is usually over in 6-10 hours. There's also forums, youtube videos, etc. to help you get through it. I am not generally a fan of the dumbing down of videogames, but it's not all tears, imho.
So yeah, Dark Souls has some 8-bit soul, but only from those 8-bit games that were exquisitely designed ... like Dark Souls itself. I doubt the author would disagree, but I think it's an important point.

PS: Just realized he's got a Dark Souls video he made that I haven't seen, watching that as I post lol.
