I love reading about how hard Dark Souls is... makes me laugh.

But that's saying how good the game is, really. It's not hard, it's fair. Anything that happens is a direct result of your actions; if you die, it's on you. It's not a hard game, just rewards conscientious playing. Best gameplay of this generation without a doubt, in my opinion.

I love how they mention Blighttown and Tomb of the Giants as ending player's attempt at the game xD

It's a good find neon, I enjoyed that. But they overstate it's difficulty a lot. It isn't THAT hard, most people could complete it without too many hang ups, and if they do they can just summon a sunbro and be done with it. silly

I'm surprised they didn't add anything in reference to other players' ability to assassinate you and mess up your game xD

great article. i don't think they're saying that the game is hard as much as it doesn't baby you like most games of the last 10 years. and that's definitely true.

as someone who didn't play Demon's Souls until after DKS, it certainly felt hard. my first playthrough took 96 ridiculous hours. compared to Resident Evil 4 that i finished in about 12.

but my second playthough took 40 hours (including probably about 20 hours of PVP) and this last one took 15, and i soloed O&S and Gwyn for the first time. it's not a hard game, but it's unforgiving. you need to learn patterns and adapt. but if you get sloppy you can still get killed by a hallow with a broken sword

I had a lot of fun with 8-bit games but when waxing nostalgic, I think people sometimes forget that there were some pretty bad 8-bit games as well. A very well designed 8-bit game could be very difficult, but at least it was fair. Some games were either uniformly awful or they were just OK with one or two genuinely bad levels that made me want to go on some kind of spree. There is nothing worse than enjoying a game and then coming to a level where the designer either had some kind of neurological fit or episode of extreme sadism and the game became unplayable.

In today's age, if the game has some bad spots, there's usually a change in difficulty to consider, and the pain is usually over in 6-10 hours. There's also forums, youtube videos, etc. to help you get through it. I am not generally a fan of the dumbing down of videogames, but it's not all tears, imho.

So yeah, Dark Souls has some 8-bit soul, but only from those 8-bit games that were exquisitely designed ... like Dark Souls itself. I doubt the author would disagree, but I think it's an important point.

Sweet, another old school player. I remember my parents getting us the Atari 2600 when I was around 6 years old when it came out. I thought my older brother was a hero when we stayed up late one night and he flipped the score on Asteroids 4 times. I've been an avid gamer since then. Some of my memorable favorites since then has been Bard's Tale series, Ultima 9, FF7, Strider, Castlevania, Shinobi, just to name a few. Those 8/16 bit games will always rule and have a permanent place in my heart.
Sorry if this is going off topic, but still...

Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, it's all the same right? That being said, I feel this is very relevant to this conversation, especially Serious's earlier comment about it's difficulty being overstated.

PS: Just realized he's got a Dark Souls video he made that I haven't seen, watching that as I post lol.

It's a good article, a very nice read happy
I don't agree with many people saying that ending this game is an accomplishment or a badge of honor. True, it's difficult, but if you get sucked in (and this happens usually in the early stages) it's very hard NOT to finish this game. I mean, I can't put down my joypad even now, how could I abandon it in the middle of my first playthrough? XD
I think people who go past the gargoyles will probably finish it at least a couple of times Dark Souls Article 639795459

Whenever I feel like I suck at the game I go to youtube and watch James' playthrough on gamefront he sucks really badd at darksouls but the guy doesn't give up and he deserves respect for trying even if sometimes it is painful to watch I'll edit this abit and post the link later it is actually a pretty funny playthrough that being said Mitch's playthrough of the game is in all senses better because mitch caught on and got better at darksouls a lot faster than James did I still enjoyed both walkthroughs though (I watched them after I beat Darksouls).

It'll be the Dark Souls wikidot.

they already had a fanbase early on after the release because those guys made the main Demon's Souls wiki too.

Nice article, I think everyone who doesn't REALLY play Dark Souls like this community does thinks the game is difficult.

All I know is, after putting so many hours into playing Demon and Dark Souls, I find figuring out other video games to be quite simple and just in ways not as rewarding to really play.
