Re: Dark souls isn't hard
He's obviously exaggerating for dramatic effect. I was simply saying his points are valid. Keep your head, be cautious, and try different things and the game isn't terribly difficult. I died 5 times in first playthrough. Parts of skyrim (on highest difficulty) caused me more trouble due to the artificially powerful enemies.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
Dark Souls is challenging, not difficult. Exactly what Forum Pirate said, just pay attention and don't rush and you'll be fine.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
I know a guy who always boasts about how great of a gamer he is, and that he can beat any game. He rented Dark Souls, returned it in an hour because as he said, "It's not a skillfull game, there are just enemies that are ridiculous to fight and unless you're really lucky they'll kill you no matter what. This game isn't challenging, it just kills you for no reason." He said he was going to speed run the game on his first try, I think that shows. It is hard, in comparison I think. But overall I really didn't find the game difficult, I just had to take my time which I always do with games anyway. I'm a thinker not a flat out fighter, so I love to plan ahead. I'd agree with this guy, and no one working at the gamestop here has gotten past the Gargoyles haha.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
It is hard I think, stepping into it first time, for hours you'll be confused, alone, and lamenting how much of a challenge it is.
Then you figure out what you're doing and it's fine. The hardest part is that you don't get told how everything works like in other games, and once you know whats coming, it's a playground.
In Dark Souls, knowledge is your greatest weapon. If you have knowledge, you can beat the game without difficulty.
I agree with the article, though he goes too extreme on some of his points.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
I agree with Serious
Pay attention and don't rush and die a lot. The first time you meet a boss you don't know his moves, if he has powerful ranged attacks or powerful melee ones. You don't know if he'll chase you, jump on you, poison you or whatever, before meeting him and dying - because most of the bosses can kill you with just 2-3 hits.
Usually it takes more than 1 try to understand how to dodge the most of his attacks and when it's safe to attack back.
True, sometimes you get lucky and you kill a boss in the first try, but let's be honest: it will happen only a couple of times max in your first playthrough (for me: iron golem and 4 kings)
So it's true you've got to have patience and attention, and learn form your mistakes because each time an enemy kills you, you have learned something about him and it gets a little easier.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
hyperbole. hes exaggerating.
I like the nich that core gamers are carving out though. The soul series, bayonetta (on higher difficulties), the later c'ieth stones from ff xiii. Games (or modes) that require you pay attention at all times and have a plan or die horribly are becoming more common now than in the last 6 years or so.
I hope it keeps up.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
@ Serious, first 3 hours of playing were spent trying to get past the Skeletons with +0 weapons with base stats and no magic or pyro. After dying so many times I look around and see the pathway to the aqueduct. Biggest "Ooooh!" moment of my playthrough xD

I'd love to learn the Demon Fire Sage's moves in new game+. Trouble is I'm dead before I've had a chance to look.

this article is correct
most deaths in dark souls come from frustration, plain stupidity or rushing.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
I remember when I first went out and bought demons souls a few years ago around fall. The gamestop clerk wearing a hookah-shell necklace says to me "Make sure you keep your receipt, this game is HARD".
It's an interesting gaming community we have. I wonder how many people actually return the souls games out of frustration for something like that to be said.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
^ according to the gamestop employees, a lot.
But really when they are exposed to so many games that are meant to be won, a game like this would seem hard.

So true. I killed Alduin on the first try in Skyrim. It took me like 10 tries to kill the Asylum Demon though.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
The thing I find most rewarding is that I can now make my way through the vast majority of the game without dieing very much at all. And that's not because I'm level eleventymillion and in tier 56 epix, it's because I_got_better.

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
Dark souls was hard for the first couple hours until I figured out how it works every death is a learning experience and I learned well. Take that demon firesage, Asylum Demon, Stray Demon, Gaping Dragon, Quelaag, Ceaseless Discharge, Centipede Demon, Four Kings, Seath the Scaleless, Nito, Moonlight Butterfly and Sif. (I beat them in one try on my first time because they were easy)

Re: Dark souls isn't hard
It happened the same to me... Lol! I couldn't believe how strong the skeletons were to be the first enemies in the game after the asylum.Yarxov wrote:@ Serious, first 3 hours of playing were spent trying to get past the Skeletons with +0 weapons with base stats and no magic or pyro. I tried hours to beat just the first two and then the other 2 by the cliff and they kept reassambling themselves and when I saw the giant skeleton I screamed and ran like a girl to the bonfire... Ohhh good times... Then I saw the path upstairs and said... "Perhaps I should try there instead..." after that I came back to put a message and warn about the skellies.
Another thing I tried was whenever I had a new weapon I tried it against the skellies to check it performance.

Yeah!!! And you know what is the best part? That now that you know the game and the enviroment you can try different aproaches in new games.
For example, I started an Int build and before going to ring any bell I already went to get the sword of astora, the one by the rotten dragon, went to get the firekeeper soul from new londo, went to free griggs at the lower burg so I could buy some spells... Anyway, what I mean is that after you learn how to play you start to realize the vast posibilities that are at your disposal to overcomes the challenges...
Ohhh man, and still feels so rewarding!!! I love this game!!!
