Post by Serious_Much on Sun Jan 22, 2012 7:46 pm

Hey guys, I havent got demons and im really tempted to get it once iv got more time to spend on games than work..

but anyway could you tell me your opinions of whether it's better, as good as Dark souls? (i doubt it would be worse based on general opinions i see) and how it differs to darks souls in terms of gameplay mechanics?

thanks, look forward to your feedback big grin

Um, you can have 99 heals. Haha, alot of the smaller things in demons are harder. NG+ is much easier in my opinion than NG+ Dark souls. Its a fun game, got my play out of it. More fun with the online functionality of tower of latria- (your summoned at the boss) did that constantly haha. But the areas are a bit more linear, less open.

I think that demon's was better in delivering an overall the world is ending. It also gave you much more insight into characters and left nothing about them unanswered.(cept maybe Yurt)

shush carphil i wasnt referring to a post in response, was pre-emptive silly

whats different in terms of gameplay? watched one PvP video and dual wielding actually looks.... (i cant bear to say it).... USEFUL?!

really? i cant believe that From took out something like that in Dark Souls.. I would be dual wielding everyday if combo attacks with 2 weapons actually worked...

Demon's Souls doesn't have any Armor upgrading, and is one long Dungeon Run, no 'bonfires' but a Nexus that you return to and then warp to each area. The Nexus has training, Black smiths, storage, quests, and an NPC that lets you Level up. I haven't played Demon's recently enough to compare enemies, but I always felt that they were easier.

In Demon's Souls, your character will be in one of two forms: Body Form or Soul Form. In Body Form (like being Unhollowed in Dark Souls), you can summon others/be invaded, but you can't put a summon sign down or try to invade others. You have normal maximum HP. In Soul Form (the one you'll be spending most of your time in), you can be summoned/invade others, but you can't summon others or be invaded. Your maximum HP is halved, but there's a ring you can pick up early on that brings your HP up to 75% of your maximum HP. You also deal slightly more damage than you do in Body Form, but the extra damage is so small that it really doesn't make a difference.

After being summoned and successfully killing the boss, you and the other player(s) all rate each other from S-D, and the higher your rating, the more souls you get from the boss. As an invader, you can heal yourself, but you can also kill the enemies throughout the stage (so if you really want to, you can be a helpful invader). After killing a boss, you get a Demon's Soul, which you can consume for souls or give it to someone to get something cool, like a new weapon or a new spell/miracle.

The healing items in Demon's Souls is various types of grass, and you can carry as many as 99 of each. Also, magic isn't limited to a certain number of uses; you have an MP bar that you can refill with spices.

There are only 3 speeds: Fast (less than 50% equip weight), Slow (more than 50% equip weight), and Snail (more than max equip weight), there is no medium speed like in Dark Souls. Also, your character has an Item Burden (which is increased with Vitality) that determines how much you can carry; no more carrying around whatever you want.

For stats, the Magic stat increases MP and # of spell slots, and Faith increases miracle power and slots. Intelligence simply increases spell power. There's also Luck, which increases plague resistance (Plague is like Toxic, except that it also decreases stamina regen) and item discovery.

The various weapon upgrades are Standard, Crushing and Sharp (for Str/Dex, respectively), Moon/Crescent (the Magic upgrades, Moon is more powerful but Crescent gives MP regen), Blessed (Faith-based, and gives HP regen), Tearing (Dex, and adds bleed), Fatal (extra critical), Dragon (Fire damage), and Mercury (adds poison). Standard maxes out at +10, everything else ends at +5. Not every upgrade applies to every weapon; for example, you can't make a Crushing Falchion or a Sharp Great Axe. Armor isn't upgradeable, what you see is what you get.

This was a long post, I know, but these are all the differences I can think of between the games.

A few more: No armor poise, no absolution, no enemies that grab you, no jump function (your character will automatically jump over a few select walls when you walk toward them), no humanity. Magic in demons souls is considered 'easy mode', fire spells are also related to magic and not pyromancy, while faith is pretty useless as an offense. Most melee mechanics are close to the same.
Imo one of the best and most memorable games of the last decade, with an unforgettable atmosphere. Play it blind and unspoiled if you can. I still wish I could play through Latria for the first time again.

Thanks for that guys, and yeah! Im going to play it unspoiled as i can hehe (unless i get stuck on some crazy boss for hours...)

Ublug, do you mean that on Demon's magic makes it really easy? Because the same is true of Dark as well i think silly (especially sorcery)

Maybe not really easy, but don't delve too deep into ranged magic if you prefer melee.
The spells are roughly the same, but you also have more items that further increases their power.

I usually use spells a lot, but in the same way i rely on melee outside of boss battles unless the thing i fight is a badass.

But ill just experiment when i get it like i did on Dark, looking forward to getting my ass handed to me again big grin

Serious... Believe me, it's awesome, both are, I'm playing it right now, it feels so rewarding when you beat an area. One other important detail is that every time you get killed you start at the very beginning of the level, no bonfires, no checkponts, nothing.

Yesterday I was in the second level of Latria, 3-2 to be precise. I was almost at the boss fog gate and because of a stupid mistake I died. I wont tell you why or how so I don't spoil your fun (or frustration I actually rage quit after that).

Both games, demon or dark souls are hands down, two of the best game available out there.

Magic truly is the Easy Mode of Demon's Souls. Sticking with Magic/Intelligence, you can just blast your way through every level, one-shotting most enemies, and for the bosses, one spell in particular is an absolute game-breaker.

Use magic if you want your summoners to love you. If you're going to try offline mode first, you should probably stick with melee to get the most out of the game's difficulty.

Latria truly is the essence of fear and despair. I'll never forget the dread I felt in every corner of that zone. The atmosphere they created, from beginning to the (very unique and fun) final boss fight was incredible. I can't think of any other game that even comes close to matching the perfection of that level's design.

Everyone is forgetting one of Demon's Souls core gameplay elements: World Tendency. There's Pure White World Tendency and Pure Black. Tendency varies depending on the players actions. It's easier to change it offline rather than online, but all I can say is that each World Tendency has some very specific and cool events for nearly all areas.
That means access to new NPC's, side-quests, enemies and items. It's easier to find your mates online too. I've got three mates which still play the game and we bring our consoles to a guy's place and do some sort of LAN. All PS3's sharing the same internet connection, then we all die, and the human guy summons. Works 100% of the time, hours of fun.

Hands down demon souls was much harder than this game. I remember rage quiting all the time in demon souls than dark souls.

Yeah I was about to say I can't believe nobodies brought up the tendency system. I actually made a friend on Demon's Souls just before Dark came out and we've basically played through Dark together and done a lot of comparing. Something I keep coming back to is the sheer brutality of the tendency system. The only way you can have certain interactions with a decent amount of NPC's, and incidentally get some of the craziest equipment, is by altering the world tendency for each separate area. The brutality comes in that in order to change a world tendency to effectually make yourself a "good" character, or gain white tendency, you can't die. I mean at all, period, in that world. Once you have died the only way you can regain that white tendency is by killing a boss, and like in Dark Souls the amount of bosses are limited per area, so say you need an item that you can only get through having a white world tendency and you've already killed most if not all of the area bosses in order to gain said tendency, and anything from falling from some of the insanely hard platforming, running into an invading phantom, etc, happens and you die, then you're SOL until NG+ to get that item or interact with that NPC. I know what I just said was probably hard to follow, welcome to Demon's Souls.
Also that wasn't a bad review, I love the game. It's just insanely difficult
