It's getting really mixed reviews so far, but all the ones I've seen have been critic reviews. I'd love to hear what a player has to say about it.

You've heard of the series though right? Silent Hill? It's the newest installment. I actually got it last Friday. I would have posted my impressions so far but as nobody posted here I assumed nobody here was interested. I'm really enjoying it so far. Professional critic reviews aren't always right.

I never base a decision off other peoples critic chart. Everybody is different so you never know til u do it yourself. I have heard of silent hill but I don't think I've ever played any of them. I mainly play BF3 and skyrim nowadays. What's th silent series about?

BF3? Its survival horror. Its the kind of game that if I explained any plot points I'd really be ruining things for anyone who hasn't, but could possibly, played (boy that was an awkward sentence wasn't it?). I'll explain as much as I can without giving anything away. To be purposely vague in each game you play as a person who is traveling, for one reason or another, and something happens, like in the first one a little girl runs out in front of the main characters car and he swerves to avoid her and gets into an accident, something sort of along those lines happens in each game and the main character wakes up from unconsciousness alone in the town of Silent Hill, which is an abandoned town that, for the purposes of my explanation, all the roads out of town are inexplicably blocked. Like when you try to leave the roads drop off into giant endless chasms. The town is also consistently pervaded by a thick fog, so sometimes when you're out exploring, which in some games is more sandboxy than in others of the series, the fog, coupled with darkness, sets in pretty thick and can get you turned around pretty easily. On top of that each main character will, for different reasons, find portable radios close to the beginning of their respective games and while out exploring in the fog, in order to try to find a way to escape from town, their radios will start picking up static. This signifies that one of the many grotesque disturbing vicious monsters that seem to have taken the place of the towns human residents is near you. The last thing I'll bring up is randomly while you're exploring the paint, wallpaper, whatever, will peel back and the general areas you explore will change to much darker, much much more grotesque, shadows of the places they were before. This is usually referred to as the "otherworld," which for lack of a better descriptor could essentially be equated to hell. The monsters get more aggressive, the puzzles usually get harder, and the game in general just gets more disturbing and scary for awhile. In some of the games these transitions are scripted and in others the transitions happen sort of like night and day in any other sandbox game. If you like the survival horror genre I highly recommend them. Youtube some videos.

I was a huge fan of the silent hill series, but I haven't picked up a game since silent hill 5. I was way to disspointed with that game, I don't think it's worth my time anymore.

If you are gonna try one of the silent hill games, deadpool, you should start with 2 or 3. and if you aren't a stickler for graphics try 1 because they have the best stories and characters.

SH4 isn't bad, and the PSP one is good, but don't let silent hill 5 be your first taste of the series.

I couldn't agree more. While I liked SH5, which specifically is SH Homecoming, its probably the worst one, well if not the worst it'd be a close running between it and SH4. 2 and 3 are, IMO, absolutely the best ones. They're actually about to release HD remakes of both in a combo pack for ps3. I've been looking forward to it for awhile.

@ Yukon: If you like the series you should think about renting Downpour. I'm really enjoying it so far. I say rent because if you're unsure that's usually a safe bet, but I don't regret dropping the $50 on it at all. The combat has been reworked a bit and I think its a lot smoother in that respect. The critics hate it, but they seem to always hate the combat for the same reasons. Like the video review on IGN calls the combat clunky and impossible to master and the video shows a player getting his @$$ beat regardless of what he tries to do. I assure you this is an exaggeration. Like in all the SH games the combat is about timing. Each enemy has openings and you just have to learn to spot them. That player was, in my mind, clearly losing to try to make a point, which I don't agree with. Combat aside I'm finding the other aspects of the game to really work well. I actually just completed a puzzle that IMO is the best puzzle I've ever done in the series. I don't want to ruin it for you in case you end up playing but I'm talking about the movie theater puzzle. It's really complex and pleasing to complete. They also threw in a taste of Shattered Memories in the otherworld events of Downpour. Occasionally when you're in the otherworld you get chased by a big ball of glowing light called the void and you run from it in a way very similar to the chase scenes in SM. I've found those to be pretty enjoyable also. They add in a sense of urgency that usually lacking in the series where you tend to be able to set your own pace.

I don't trust game reviews anymore. There were several scandals/kerfluffles where major review sites got caught hyping or at least softening criticism of games due to ad revenues. Also, most gave glowing odes to Skyrim, which was unplayable on my brand new PS3.

Yeah no kidding. I got 230 hours deep into Skyrim and by then my save file was complex enough that the game was essentially made entirely unplayable. But then Dark Souls came out and I haven't picked Skyrim back up since. But that's a different story.

The tower of latria in demons souls always gave me the faintest memory of the prison in silent hill 2.. brr..

Plastic, did they remove the God of war style boss battles in SH downpour? I think that was one of my main grips with sh5, the whole combat system just didn't FEEL like a silent hill series game.

EDIT: i just saw your post was edited and directed at me NVM. haha.

I still havent played SM, like I said, havent really left like touching the series with a 5 foot pole after what silent hill 5 turned out to be. But now that I am in a town with a population over 1000 and blockbuster, I might consider renting.

I really like Silent Hill, I'm actually not so big into the game play but I do enjoy the story. However I absolutely hate the cult of the town, I really wish that was gone from the series. Actually I guess the story isn't my favourite part, the setting and enemies are. I love the design of enemies down to a T, I love everything each of them represents. I love how the world represents the character, and then I guess that goes into the idea of a world reflective of a character just really appeals to me. I'm a character specialist when it comes to writing, so I can't help but really enjoy it.

I agree with that but for me the chunkiness of the combat in earlier games felt more real these weren't battle commandos they were just people. Nothing makes me realize I am playing a game more than a big flashing X on the screen to prompt me to dig my crowbar into an enemies face. Sh5 just didn't have that feeling of helplessness or fear behind the gun
And all the monsters were rehashed and felt really plain for a silent hill game

Actually in that regard I liked Shattered Memories for the idea that you ran away, I mean really. If I was in those situations I wouldn't even try to fight them with a crowbar. I'd be a poof of smoke as the real me is already miles away crying and screaming.

Lol I knew u would be here eventually tolvo.

But these silent hills have me curious so I will have to check it out. And BF3 is battlefield 3. In my opinion, best realistic shooter game and most fun. And skyrim, it's made by Bethesda so u had to of known that it was gonna have some issues. If u played fallout, then u knew what u were getting into so u can't really be shocked it had problems. That last update they did fixed all of my issues. I've been going 7 to 8 hour plays on weekends and not one freezing problem or frame rate change. Even with the frame rate change it still was a great game too me. Of it started having problems I would just restart my system and go again for another 4 hours before it crashed again and just repeat the process. I mean it only takes u a min max to restart and be back on strolling the streets of markarth or whiterun. I never understood why people would complain about turning it off when it takes literally a min to fix. Everything isn't perfect. Way off topic. Now is the silent hills like a first person or third person view?

Yeah I know what you're talking about, like the button screen prompt stuff. I'm not super far into Downpour yet but so far there definitely hasn't been any of that. All the enemies are new in this one so far too, and I've been impressed up to the point I'm at. One of them in particular is really awesome. It's a play on the mannequin enemies from the other games, but is executed much differently. Not only does it work but its really creepy, especially the event where it's first introduced. That was probably the biggest scare for me so far. One thing I really like about the new combat system is that you tend to fight more than one enemy at a time. The way the game works is instead of thick fog in the outside areas the weather fluctuates from clear to rain storms, and when its raining the enemies get more numerous and much more aggressive. Like when its clear they act much like the way they do in other games, like you'll usually be able to spot them before they spot you, with the use of your radio as a guide, but when its raining they'll actively hunt you in packs, and when they find you they tactically coordinate attacks against you. For example there's a kind of enemy that attacks primarily at range, and it'll attack you in tandem with a couple of melee enemies. The melee enemies will try their best to pincer you, like slowly move to each side of you so that in order to fight one you have to have your back to another, which leaves you open for a grapple which you combat by shaking the joystick, while the third one will stay back and use its projectiles. You actually have to think and fight tactically in order to survive encounters like this, like using the environment to your advantage. Another sound tactic is to run for shelter when the rain starts. It really keeps you thinking on your feet. The only thing they added in this one that I'm still not sure if I like or not, although it does really add a sense of vulnerability, which I also like in survival horror games, is that you no longer get permanent weapons for your inventory. It's sort of the same system as the PSP SH except you don't get to keep anything more than what you're actively carrying. The only exception is firearms. If you're lucky enough to find a gun you can hold onto it, as well as any ammo you find, as a back up weapon, but you can only carry one melee weapon at a time and they all break eventually, depending on the weapon some of them break relatively fast. It's pretty realistic in that sense, like if you have a weapon that's wooden it will break faster than a weapon that's metal, and if your weapon is like a long pole weapon, like a shovel or a rake, it will break more easily than a weapon that's thicker and would naturally be more durable. It makes it so that you really have to weigh out the pros and cons of your weapons too, like a longer weapon is easier to keep enemies at a distance with but also will break more easily. While this definitely keeps you on your toes, sometimes having to desperately run for another weapon in the heat of battle, I'm not sure I like it yet because I enjoyed having my arsenal available to me in my inventory, getting good with weapons I liked and ignoring weapons I didn't. I agree with you though that the genre usually works better if you're not a super powered character, cough Chris Redfield, cough, Siren comes to mind particularly. I find that when you feel like a vulnerable, relatively helpless, real person it makes the game scarier.

They're both really good. 2 is probably my favorite but 3 is pretty close. SH3 has my favorite monster of the series, maybe even in any survival horror game. I think SH2 has the most revealing plot line of any of them though. I played SH1 and then SH3, which is when I got really into the series and went out and bought 2 and after playing it got such a better understanding of whats actually going on. Which in the SH universe isn't always an easy thing to grasp.

I don't want to ruin anything for anyone who hasn't played it but for anyone who has, the monster I'm referring to is the one that's introduced in the subway. The big guys. It took me a few minutes with it the first time to realize what it was, like the theme they were playing on. Such a grotesque and disturbing concept. That's not taking into consideration the way it fights you, slowly lumbering around mixed with sudden unexpected bursts of speed. Those things scare me every single time.

I like aspects of SH3, I think it has the best aesthetics and world. However I dislike the story of that one the most. But I just really hate the cult in the series, I think it is such a red herring, I'd rather the game just be psychological, not fantasy.
