AAA titles are now becoming more frequent than ever within the industry, thanks to the great success many companies have gotten lately, as we know last year and this year many 'hyped' games have been released. But what of gaming journalism?

You may or may not agree with some of the points here. However the overall picture of a much too cosy and dependant relationship between review sites and game publishers. Both are far too dependant on one another.

I remember buying Star Wars the Force Unleashed for the Wii after seeing the great review it got...

    9/10? I'd say, -3/10, I'd rather play Super Man 64.

Sadly this is just the way things are, ever since that fatefully stupid choice of mine I've pretty much never trusted a game based on reviews or even consumer feedback. Always I try a game out first through some means, Dark Souls was the only exception to this and boy was that a good choice.

But yeah, I enjoyed some of the games he listed but I do agree with the issues he brought up. Kind of goes hand in hand with people buying products regardless of the future problems it could bring up merely because they are fans.

I'm not one to sit on IGN or gameFAQ's and look up reviews. I have had friends tell me they won't try games I recommend because they looked at online reviews and saw they were unfavourable....

Riiight. Well I am more of a games=art, and I have a hard time getting into something that holds my hand or has no plot to speak of. So games like Demons' souls, dark souls, god hand, shadow of colossus/ico. These to me are fantastic games but I also like well received games like killzone, resident evil's etc...
What am I trying to say here? Don't let reviews dictate your gaming experience, unless they are freelance amateurs, and even then don't let someone stop you from picking up something that looks fun. After all thats what EB games and receipts are for: returning your mistakes.

The reviewers can't be the only ones held responsible. The reader has to have discretion in his choice.

One thing to note is what they actually say and how they word things. Is it, "The game has some flaws but this is great!" Usually means they don't want to identify any issues. Typically when listening to a review of something, not games, I listen and see if they are objectively or subjectively looking at things. Is it a solid story that while it has a few loose ends can end up outweighing some of the issues like camera work or minor bugs, or is it, the story makes the game completely worth it!
