    Noob Questions Empty Noob Questions

Post by awsimo Thu Oct 31, 2013 11:24 am

Ok, I have a couple of dumb questions:

    1) Bows and Pyromancy Flame: Does it matter which hand I equip them to? I know my sword does less damage in the left hand, but does this apply to ALL weapons?

    2) Shields: What does it mean to upgrade them to "Magic," "Fire," "Lightning," etc? Do they protect more against that particular element? I'm trying to decide how to proceed with my beloved Grass Crest Shield +10. It doesn't seem to scale very well (especially since I'm a Dex build), so is there a downside to going down the Magic or Fire paths instead of Normal?

    Thanks!

    1) No, it doesn't apply to all weapons. Pyromancy flame gives the same effect (The pyromancy you have equipped) and a bow changed to two handed in any case.

    2) http://darksoulswiki.wikispaces.com/Grass+Crest+Shield (Here)

According to this, no, it doesn't  protect more against a particular element, instead it upgrades its damage. For example, going along the lightning path adds lightning damage.

Though, the downside would be, once again according to the stats on there, that you would end up with less stability.

If I was wrong about anything, I do apologize.

elemental path shields actually do gain a small amount of added resistence...but its only about 5%, not worth it as far as most are concerned, and if the shields natural res to an element is over around 70% the benefit is even smaller.

the one shield found to be useful on an elemental path would be the warriors round shield upgraded along the magic path, which gets it to something like 85% magic resist, and being a small shield already the stability loss isn't too noticeable.

Ah, I see. Then I apologize for my mistake. I suspected that was the case, but according that that it didn't say, so I abstained from saying anything. Thank you for the correction.

no need to apologize, most people don't mess with elemental shields and most resources on the web haven't bothered to categorize the % increases involved... the only reason i know for sure is that i did a shields only run...

oh and to append my previous post there is one other shield thats good elemental; the bone wheel shield, as even at +15 it has the same stability as at base and the minimal scaling it gets is outclassed by the elemental damage boost of other paths, and if the op is unfamiliar with the bone wheel shield its a great shield that has a unique shield bash thats a three hit combo (usually adds up to around 400-600 damage for a maxed out shield if all three hits connect.)

Thanks guys, that clears things up a lot! I assumed upgrading a shield improved defense, but I guess it mostly increases attack and stability. (Unless I go the Magic route, like you said.)

So, since I don't really use my shield as a weapon, is it even worth it to upgrade past +10? I'll only get 2 more points of stability, doesn't seem like much...

Of course it isn't crucial to continue to upgrade it past +10, but if you have the materials to spare, or the time to spend farming for them there is no harm, and in the long run even the small points stack up to make your character, if just a little but, stronger.
