A new look at Nito. Empty A new look at Nito.

    Post by Wilkinson3424 Fri Aug 16, 2013 12:52 am

    Alright i'll make this brief...

Nito the First of the dead, He owns his Gravelord Servant covenant, but perhaps there's more to the covenant than just spreading the curse.

Nito governs death, and puts all souls to rest.

If you kill him you stay in the covenant, but why?

How come you can't kill him from the shortcut in the catacombs?

He is immortal when in the catacombs, why does he only show himself after you best the Tomb of the giants?

    Here is what I think.

This is how I think Nito reacts when you are a...

Non Gravelord: He is simply protecting himself against you.

Gravelord Servant: Maybe he wants an honourable death? He wants to give his soul to a worthy successor and gives the Gravelord Servant a challenging fight to see if he's worthy of the soul of death, the ultimate weapon of cursing other's worlds.

Nito governs death, perhaps he merely wants to transcend to his plane of death, but have a worthy successor left behind to govern death.

That would explain why he only fights you when you defeat the tomb of the giants, he would not want to waste a new gravelord servant who challenged him from the tomb, Nito would only fight someone who proved his power. The Servant must prove himself by conquering the Tomb.

When the undead gets this soul he may choose to keep it as he governs death, or he may use it for other purposes.

What do you guys think? Is this just a game mechanic? Perhaps, but then again think about it, From Soft creates the game, then makes the lore. Perhaps they covered up this mechanic by making lore like this? There is only speculation though.

But is this a good theory?

This is reasonable. I do think it's just a game mechanic that they never explained in detail, though.

That first video on Nito is brilliant. I'd never thought of him that way and it's presented very clearly, definitely worth watching. The Paladin Leeroy explanation makes so much sense after all this time of wondering if he'd been corrupted or went insane when actually Nito and Gwyn were simply allies.

Just because I'm incredibly tired and this is my last thread before bed, you don't have to just beat Tomb of the Giants to get to him; you must also best Anor Londo's atrocities since you are required to have the Lord Vessel to move the golden barrier from his pathway in order to challenge him.

But he is immortal..... I think it really is just a gameplay mechanic for that.

Weird thing is, the skeletons aren't in the area unless you actually go to fight him... Maybe he is expecting you?

    That's what I was thinking.

Something we know is that even when in his coffin, he's conscious. Otherwise how could he "Oversee" all death? I think it's also pretty safe to assume that everything moving in the Tomb of the Giants, are moving due to Nito. So it would also makes sense that he is aware of you fighting your way in.

Another idea about his body guards during the boss fight.

They're not there when you enter the covenant. Because it's apparent you're there to join. But, what if when you're on your way to fight him, he saw this. And took some bones and parts from his own being, and animated them for his own sake?

Since Nito seems to be a collection of beings rather than only one person, that is possible. I personally don't think Nito cares that much about anything anymore...Pinwheel took his power and Nito's still just laying there, chilling.

Nito is not a humanoid entity like many think. He is quite literally an avatar of death; his body is merely a shell that he uses like a puppet. Perhaps he is sentient, perhaps not. What matters is that he isn't just a wielder of death: he IS death.

It is through Nito that each living thing passes to the afterlife (or whatever qualifies in Dark Souls). The vast majority of graves that we see are in the catacombs; this may not be just out of respect as one would initially think. Perhaps, like many religions believe, the souls of the deceased must "walk" to the afterlife. They must walk to Nito.

Consider that there are only a handful of graves that are seen outside of the catacombs and the graveyard above it. There's Manus, who is actually underground and so may be in the TotG. There's the graveyard in the painted world, which may just be symbolically placed in the painting. And there is the grave of Artorias and the "coffin of Gwyn;" both of which were seen as gods (or perhaps demigod in Artorias' case), and are likely viewed differently.

Nito being the living embodiment of death even makes sense thematically. Dark Souls is all about the mixing of contrasting elements and seeing what comes out on top. The mixing of "pure" souls and humanity and the endings that accompany them. The mixing of life and death that is undeath. You face down and best the lords of heat, death, and light and in doing so, take their place.

Besides, what could be more badass than staring down death and killing him.

I used to  consider this back in the days when I was one Nito's chosen servants...

I used to have this Theory about the Age of the Dead, but it sank into the depth of the forums.

Taking a break always seems to invite a new perspective when looking at something. Hence this new theory about Nito, that I surprisingly can't remember anyone taking before.

    Post by Wilkinson3424 Fri Oct 04, 2013 1:22 pm

I just had a lightbulb appear over my head about the whole afterlife topic.

When a creature dies it loses it's soul, naturally.

.... This is where my theory comes into play about the after life, and maybe even the cause of the undead curse itself!

" The power of his soul is
so great that it satiates the Lordvessel,
despite the fact that much of its energy has
already been offered to death." -Nito's Soul

Now before I smack you in the face with my theory, lets take a look at some facts here. The first flame is dieing out, Nito is the only sane lord from what we can assume by the way he acts in his tomb. The undead are continuously rising from their graves in the catacombs, but they "permanently" die everywhere else...

Pinwheel must have risen some necromancers, given them some of nito's power that he stole, so they could control the death of his skeletons.

But this is off topic, the point I was trying to make there is that Nito's Soul gives him the power to govern who dies and who passes to the afterlife.

"Most of his soul has already been offered to death".

    I thought Nito was death?

Or... perhaps that is the name of his realm of death where souls go to live on.

But wait, Wilks! How can the undead go to the realm of death without their soul! It was stolen!

That's the core of my theory, Nito gives the bodies a tiny fraction of his soul, so that it may become a manifestation of the person who died, and then pass to the realm of death.

Nito noticed how much of a dent this was putting in his soul, so he stopped giving the dead a ticket to the afterlife, so he could survive. Thus creating.... the curse of the undead.

If they could not die, what else to do besides rise again? Screw science!

"Wait how come they only come back when you touch a bonfire!"

Well that's not 100% true, walk to a new area, then come back, they will be living again.

Now think about this newer theory!

    Optional crazy bonfire theory:

However I will stand by my Nito theory as it's 90% speculation and I think Nito plays a much bigger part in the major storyline than we think.

Not entirely sure about him being the cause of undeath because there are a couple of references to people being able to make others undead (Solaire and depths key I think?) but also there are meant to be outbreaks of undeath even though it sounds like Nito would just stop once he realised how weak he was becoming.

Still Nitos lore feels so incomplete that this could be right I just don't see it right now as I'm pretty tired. Strangely I actually agree that the bonfires are portals into time or have some connection with time.
