Painting Guardian Sword... Very Underrated? Empty Painting Guardian Sword... Very Underrated?

Post by Soul of Stray Demon Fri Oct 04, 2013 7:30 pm

Think about it. It deals more damage then a Falchion (although barely), weighs less, is faster, has bleed build-up, and a moving r2. The only flaw of it is it's range. But that's a big flaw of another weapon class, the Daggers.

Really the Painting Guardian Sword is just a Curved Sword combined with a Dagger. And for what it is when you consider it that way, It's freaking amazing.

Sure you have to get close to the other player, but it's not all that much closer compared to something like a Falchion, and when you compare it to Daggers, it's perfectly normal. It takes the good of the curved sword class, while only taking one bad from the daggers.

I've always been confused as to why I don't see it more often. It's very very useful and is a great weapon to have at the very least as a side weapon.

I gotta say, I love this weapon, it is just so ungodly amazing. It has so many features and for some reason it is disliked for it's range. In fact, I dare say it may be the best weapon in the whole game.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this outstanding example of a weapon?

I think it has a long way to fall before i could call it the worst PvP weapon, but I consider it bad due to that terrible range. The major issue is when you -two hand it-. It's range is so obscenely small you can sometimes miss the player when he's physically touching you. (It's rare, but happens)

The big issue to me is it's niche was stolen. The Gold tracer is better in every way, and with the Gold Tracer around the PGS becomes an entertaining distraction rather than a considerable 'upgrade' from the falchion.

It's a short curved sword with bleed, not much else to it.

Why are you 2 handing the PGS? Why?

The PGS also does more damage then the Gold Tracer, is lighter, and is buffable.

The parrying dagger is longer than the PGS, lighter, quicker, and buffable, but it's still considered sub par compared to the PGS. Just noting.

A curved sword can be blind parried while one handed, however I was just noting that have the option to two hand a weapon to do incredible damage is important, as there is always a situation worthy of two handing, and having the option unavailable at all is a major tactical loss.

It's fast. Does good damage. But it's short. And people spam it and get parried. If it was such a good weapon you'd see it around a lot more, which you do not. It cuts like a razor but it is just not up to par with other curved swords.

The few things PGS has going for it is it's speed, high damage, low weight and the ability to be buffed .

Everything else about this Weapon sucks, super short range, R2s are worthless and it's only marginally stronger than the other curved Swords .

The only way to use this Weapon is to stack poeise and spam unlocked 2H R1 .
Which you can do with every other Weapon .

I like to cosplay as a Painting Guardian though .

Its small damage boost is simply not enough to make up for its range. It would take an excellent player to put it to good use in competitive PvP, and they'd have a run for their money if their opponent was anywhere near their level of skill.

Personally i never found use for it .
Aside from the ocassional Combo with an off hand Gold Tracer i never found a good reason to not use the R1 of it instead .

It's a feint attack. The first time you swing, you'll likely wiff on air, but follow it up with the second part of the R2, because most players will try to jump in and strike you after the first one.

Instantly 3-4 hits on your opponent, doing 700-900 damage, and with the gold tracer usually bleeding them. (PGS is too bad to bleed usually)

It's also obscene for dead angling.

The PGS makes for a sub par main weapon, or even a backup, for reasons others have already stated.  The one niche where I've found some use for it is in the off hand.  An off hand gold tracer can't parry,  and a falchion doesn't have bleed.  Also the lack of range doesn't hurt an off hand PGS's ability to cancel BS damage, or to pull off a follow up to an attack from your RH weapon that will likely not get parried.  Still I wouldn't really say it's underrated.

130+. I don't have a scientific number but full havels gets stunned, havels + poise ring does not. So somewhere around 130. Knowing breakpoints likely 137 based on the formula, but I don't honestly know.

That R2 is exceptionally good for faints out of fat rolls. Instead of doing a rolling attack, try using the R2 and see how many people run right in to get hit. You don't have enough time to dodge by the point you recognize it. It's also good for responding to other strength weapons, as if your opponent tries to take the opportunity to hit you with any slower weapon, it will hit them as well. Especially good for countering your opponents rolling attack.

The scaling and bleed buildup are nice, but it's too short for my tastes. I'll just stick to the falchion if I want a curved sword.

The Painting Guardian Sword is an underrated weapon. Saying this, it is not a good weapon in a PvP stand point as compared to most of the curved swords. Or any sword, really. Why?

Range us an obvious downside, and a very important thing to take note of. The range on it is horrid. Absolutely horrid. It means you must get in close to them until you are nearly touching to hit, and it is hard to win with it even if you do constant hit-and-run strategies. This means that people can sometimes swing, hit you before you are in range, then block or roll away before you are even in attacking range.

The damage on it is higher then most people expect, but not enough to take note of with any significance, and its bleed is too weak to be useful. While buffable, it is simply outclassed by the other curved swords. Even daggers are preferable to it, as the Dagger has good thrusting attacks and the Bandit Knife is better at criticals. Its R2s are hard to find a use for other then catching people off guard, which a whole lot of weapons are much better at doing. Since it carries you forward, you are just asking to be backstabbed with it. With the low poise break and low damage of a curved sword, one would gladly tank a hit for an easy backstab.

Having used this weapon on my painting guardian cosplay, I can fairly say it is not very good compared to other things. When the gold tracer was added it was just an added slap in the face to the Painting Guardian Sword.

I actually use this a bit when invading, but it's really only good for invasions. If you're in any sort of duel I'd say don't use it. It's likely that people will have an easy time avoiding it while switching to a spear to poke at you and if that's not the case be prepared for them to parry you.

The Artorias Greatswords would like to have a word with you.

Simply put, the PGS doesn't have enough range, the Falchion has better ranged while still cutting through gankers like it's nothing with DMB.
