Unpatched Dark Souls run? Empty Unpatched Dark Souls run?

    Post by Green__Eagle Tue Sep 10, 2013 10:02 am

I have a second PS3 sitting here that I can take off-line. I can delete my save file and remove the Dark Souls patches. I can record my progress.

Who would be interested in seeing an Unpatched Dark Souls run? If you would like to see it, are there any special requests you would like to make?

Not to discuss how to do it, but are you going to abuse some of the glitches that come with the unpatched version?
Also, with it unpatched you have to remember quite a few things won't be available such as twinkling tite won't be available by any merchants, No DLC, some enemies don't give souls and your souls are cut in half.

Also, if you're recording, my suggestion would be to NOT record stuff like the glitches, farming, smithing etc. Also, make sure your commentary is good. I've seen quite a few vids where the commentary was dull, boring or not even there. Stuff like that makes people hit the STOP button.

If you do an sl 1 run, there would be no need for glitches, so I'd vote on that one silly

Unpatched? Prepare to face the Blightown lag like you've never experienced it before! Also cower in fear before random save corruptions and freezing! Look over there aren't those random visual glitches beautiful!?

This is before we get onto balancing. Hello Iron Flesh!

Ahh...memories. I'd watch an unlatch we run. I'm most interested in where enemies used to be placed. It's been so long I can't remember which enemies were moved and how they used to affect the areas happy

My vote is for no restrictions on levels. I honestly find SL1 runs boring because there's no growth and sense of progress, only skill. I'd rather see a character evolve than see an individual's personal PvE badassery.

I remember that I got the game the day it came out and I had to immediately install a patch for it; I've never played a completely patch-less game.

so... one vote for SL1 run, one vote for Don't do it. The SL200 vote was mine (I wanted to see what the vote tally is) and if I do it, I want to use some of the stronger weapons in the game.

    Anyone else care to vote?

I voted for just the first one... sorry, no input on level restriction here! But I would like to see you do it.

I actually have a request if you don't mind. There are a lot of reports that in the unpatched version of the game (perhaps all patches before 1.05), you can be infected by Gravelord Black Phantoms in the Painted World. It is completely offline (of course), and cannot be cleared normally because there is no one to invade. Supposedly, going hollow temporarily ends it until you go human again, and killing Priscilla ends the infection permanently.

If you could document this and test if the hollow vs. human / priscilla aspects are true, that would be pretty cool.

You should just play it normally. Patches were made mostly for player convenience rather than actual difficulty (except to remove some real fake difficulty). You can expect less soul gains, less materials, lower drop rates and a large amount of imbalances among your equipment, and some bugs.

You can also expect a couple of cheap kills from the Hellkite Drake and Lost Izalith. Also, iirc, Capra Demon was a much more dangerous opponent that time around.

Simply enough, if you started playing before somewhere around November, 2011 (around Patch 1.04) you shouldn't expect any drastic changes, otherwise, prepare for die.

I'm sad that I can't try it out on PC. I think old DWGR vs all the added difficulty balances pretty well silly

I can vouch it for you. I had it happen during my unpatched play.

So far 7 people have voted for me to do this, one person has voted for me not to do it. So when I finish my SL1 fight with Gwyn, I'll begin this unpatched Dark Souls run.

Any thoughts on what you would like to see for a starting class? Should I start as a mage? Should I get the Master Key as a starting gift?

I have to say, I'm a little scared!

I've actually been doing this since I saw this post :p I just lack the ability to stream. But let me tell you, it is a whole other game without those patches. If you don't abuse the glitches (not saying you shouldn't, they're fun XD) it lives up to being one of the hardest games released. The aggro ranges on everything are huge. Oh, and have fun in Lost Izalith winking

I remember how Lost Izalith used to be when the dragon legs had a high aggro response. To this day I try to go through there with a fog ring equipped. :-)

Okay: I finished my SL1 One Weapon Per Boss Challenge last night against Gwyn. I just need to finish editing the video and post it (tonight, perhaps).

My question to you guys is: Do you want to see, in the video, how to delete the save files and depatch the game?

No because that could be considered as breaking the rules. Even tho you aren't showing any glitches, it may not be allowed. Best thing to do is pm an admin and ask if it's ok to show that stuff. Better to be safe than sorry greenie big grin

I'm interested for sure...the first time I loaded the game up on 360 while in Afghanistan it was completely unpatched, though I didn't go much beyond the Taurus Demon before stopping.  Now that I started again on PC, it's a bit easier as souls are much more plentiful, but I wouldn't notice any differences besides that.

I'm there now and I think I have video of a couple of Black Phantom Fire Bomb guys that are in the area where King Jeremiah invades you. Here is a screen shot to tide you over.
