Because we have a healthy number of people here that read the books as well as people that just watch the HBO series, I thought it would be best to make another thread so people can discuss what's in the books here without spoiling it for people in the Game of Thrones thread.

DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS LATER IN THE TV SERIES.

If you have just started reading the books, please be aware that all discussions here will be up to the latest release. Content in this thread will also contain cross theories with the TV show so people who have read the books but don't want the TV series spoiled should stop reading now.

Second! But I'll go first as far as comments.

I believe Jon Snow is the trueborn child of Lyanna Stark and Rheagar Targaryian. There is just too much evidence supporting this theory and would be a good reason why Ned would not only push Jon to join the black (like Maester Aemon), but also why Ned doesn't want to discuss Jon's mother until after he has said his vows.

I've only read the books a single time and will probably start book 1 again in a couple weeks to see if I can read deeper into some of the more subtle themes.

I honestly think Jon Snow's mother is going to be irrelevant as I don't see anything special in him from the Targaryen side like Daenerys resistance to fire. I think the biggie is Jon Snow's dilemma fighting with Stannis against his brother Bran who has sided with the Others.

Dany has a high tolerance for heat, but she does still get burned, as shown at the end of a dance w/ dragons. She was fire proof when she made the dragons, but that is more indicative of the dragon's magic (which has made everyone's magic better) more than anything special about her Targaryan blood IMO.

I would be surprised if Jon's parents are irrelevant to the story as I see 'a song of ice and fire' as referring to Jon, ice being Lyanna Stark, Fire being Rhaegar Targaryan. I think he ties in with either the prince that was promised, the fire guy reborn (Assor Assai?), part of the 'three headed dragon', or a combination.

My prediction about Bran is that he gains control of one of the dragons as a warg so that Jon can ride him and he helps defeat the others, which I think are different than the old gods.

SPOILER ALERT: Too gory even for Game of Thrones? Fans left 'sickened' by bloodshed in what is being touted as one of most gruesome scenes in TV history

The HBO show has created as many headlines for the controversy it’s caused due it's nudity and violence as it has for the amount of acclaim it’s received.

I didn't get to see this last night, but gauging by the reactions it seems they did a good job. I read these pages a half dozen times hoping that what I read didn't really happen. Can't wait to watch this tonight!

I think I'm one of the few that thinks episode 9 didn't live up to the shock value of the books, plus some scenes didn't live up to how I imagined it. The way Roose Bolton finished off Robb looked sloppy, there was no burning of the tents with the soldiers inside, the moment Walder Frey silenced everyone so Robb can hear the death of his wolf and even the smack on the back of Arya's head with an axe was missing. One bit I did like which I assumed was Talisa appearing at the red wedding and getting killed because Jeyne Westerling wasn't there in the book plus Talisa's death was shocking to watch with the stabbing in the gut.

My gf didn't read the books and she was crying after this episode. Between Bran and Rickon splitting up, Arya getting so close to being reunited only to have to run, and the finality of the Red Wedding she was in absolute shock. She's not even a huge fan and ended up watching it a second time by herself.

No show will ever live up to how you imagined it, but for those that didn't read the books this episode was just as shocking as those of us who read the red wedding chapter and immediately said "WTF?", IMHO.

Hey guys, do you think they will bring forward in episode 10 the surprise we all got from the end of A Storm of Swords or leave it mid way in season 4?

Also who do you think will be the actors of Oberyn Martell and Mace Tyrell will be?

I'm not sure... I think they'll wait for Jeoffry's wedding until next season as there is still quite a bit of preparation needed before it, such are the Martell and Tyrell story arcs.

I think this season w/ end w/ Balon's death, Stannis' disbelief since only 2/3 'leeches' were successful and could be construed as not the will of R'hillor (foreshadow?), Jon's imprisonment as a turncloak w/ the wildlings just about to attack the wall, the resolution of the red wedding (blackfish & burning the army), Tywin admitting to orchestrating it, Tyrion's battle as to what to do about Sansa after it, and the decision of Dany to be queen where she is as 'practice'.

Next season will be the rest of SoS... which is still quite a bit. Glad they split this book into two seasons.

I always thought that oberyn could be the Egyptian guy from th Mummy that helps them kill the bad guy. He's got the Dorne feel and plus already has had some action sequences..

all I want them to do is bring the Gregor clegane from the first season back.

In all honesty he seems a lazy choice because everyone has seen him do a roll similar to Oberyn. What I really want to see is someone who looks and give of the vibe in this bit of artwork.

That armour is the business (I swear if Fromsoft allowed an armour set from ASOIAF this would be it) and he looks like he is Oberyn.

Yes. The show is only about 1/2 way through book 3. I just finished them. Reading another series now and will be re-reading them later this summer to see how my theories work out.

Just saw Ep 10 last night and the only thing I got wrong was Balon didn't die and Jon wasn't 'explicitly' imprisoned, though the season did end w/ Jon injured and returning to the wall like I thought would happen at the beginning of the season. I thought this was a great season overall, better than last, but not quite as good as the first. Pumped for the purple wedding, the Oberyn fight, and the trial.

What's got me at the end of this season is Jamie returning to king's Landing before Joffery's wedding and death and I wonder how his scenes are going to play out.

Also loved seeing Greywind's head on Robb Stark's shoulders, I thought we wouldn't get to see that but the way they did it in the series was brilliant.

I liked seeing the wolf head too... lots of complaints after last episode that there wasn't enough fallout from after the Red Wedding and this episode delivered.

I don't remember Jaime's arc well enough, but isn't he there for the wedding? He's for sure there right after the trial, but like I said, I don't remember that arc as well. I thought he came back, *** Cercei, told his father he didn't want to be the lannister heir, wedding, trial, sent off to the riverlands.

No Jamie sees Cersei praying next to Joffery's coffin (at the Sept of Balor I think) and then has sex with her right there. He then confesses that he wants them to come clean about their love which results in Cersei making a comment that Jamie has changed. All the other stuff you mentioned is pretty much spot on.

Poliwrath, there's a slight problem with bringing back Gregor Clegane: he's supposed to be 8 foot tall. I think maybe they should've established him as more of a monster character, but he wasn't in the books so... Shrug

By the way, here's why I think the identity of Jon's mother isn't important:
    Spoiler:

By the way, its spelt Jaime not Jamie.
