    SL1 Curiousity Empty SL1 Curiousity

    Post by Bpaint2807 Sun Sep 08, 2013 2:21 pm

So I've recently started my first SL1 run, so far it has been a blast. Really thinking about playing nothing but base level builds for the rest of time I play this game. Even considering going in to DS2 starting out with base SL builds.

Anyway, I was just curious about a few things.

First though, my gear so far:

Fire Battle Axe +5 (My main weapon of choice)
Lightning Dagger +5 (For when Fire is not the optimal damage type)
Battle Axe +5 / Dagger +5 (Just for fun, love coating them with Poison resin)
    Light Crossbow +5
    Pyromany Flame +10
    Jagged Ghost Blade
    Divine Battle Axe +5
    Grass Crest Shield
    Crest Shield
    Dragon Crest Shield

I understand a lot of people swear by the Reinforced Club for SL1. Personally the Battle Axe feels right to me. I'm a big fan of the Claymore and the Battle Axe feels to me like the SL1 Claymore. Dagger is another one I love just for it's raw speed output.

More looking for your opinions on what has worked for you, what you thought was fun, and why. I know throughout the Wiki on the Forums I could find a cookie cutter "most effective" SL1 set up. Not looking for raw stats, stats can be made up for with play style. So here are the questions:

Do you generally prefer a Quality weapon coated with Resin, or straight Elemental paths?

Favor Ring or Havel's? I know favor ring boosts more traits overall, but it's kinda stuck there once you put it on. Don't know if the extra health and stamina is as helpful on a SL1 as from what I understand not getting hit is a better strategy for survival then being able to "tank".

Armor; Is it worth trying to work Def. stats or do you tend focus on mobility? Maybe even a combo of style, mobility, and resistances...

What armor set ups do you use? Do you find 1 that is decent (for looks or for stats), or do you tailor your armor to the zone you are running?

Does poise (in PVE) matter at all on a SL1? As I said I tend to go for just trying to not get hit at all instead of tanking hits. From what I understand poise helps in continuing through a motion even while being hit (finishing a roll or swing even though you've been hit in the middle of it).

Thanks in advance for any input. Really loving the SL1 concept so far and looking forward to many more hours of fun on it.

I'm a big fan of the chaos battle axe and a lightning hand axe for back up. The hand axe is just a ton of fun to use in my opinion. Poise and resists are important, but so is mobility. You need to dodge, but be able to tank a hit and not get bled out quickly by things like the skeletons in the catacombs. I use the gold hemmed set with wolf ring to accomplish this, but everyone's different. Dodging really is key.

Just grabbed the Gold Hemmed set, going to give that combo a shot. I thought about checking out Chaos, but I burn through Humanity too quick to carry 10 in my pool at all times. Been kindling every bonfire that I know I will use frequently as soon as I light it, also have been doing my best to stay in human form as much as possible, for co-op and invasions.

Take your Jagged Ghost Blade to a +5 and pick up the Balder Shield and upgrade that.
Craft a Crystal Ring Shield and upgrade it; blocks practically all magic attacks, but the stability is lacking.

I'm almost done with my SL1 videos. Feel free to check them out to see him use all weapons available to a SL1 character. The only exception is I am not using Pyro against bosses.

Thought about using that more. I really liked the R2, R2 combo on that blade. If i remember correctly you need the Moonlight Butterfly soul for CRS and i fed it to Frampt. I'll double check the wiki though.

I have lots of builds around sl 11-12. I have +15 weapons and elemental weapons maxed out. I know they usually say that +15 is always the strongest, but that depends. When you apply resin, you can kind of see it as an elemental. Just apply the resin and check how much damage (AR) it has on your stats screen. Then switch to the elemental and compare. In the low levels, your elemantal is stronger.

I've had someone point out to me that the +15 is stronger because he tested it. However, that testing was done on Royal Sentinels. Usually, all my elementals are lightning. Sentinels seems to take more damage from physical weapons (+15) than my lightning +5 weapons, even without resin applied. So I suggest you have a strong 'physical' weapon for Anor Londo.

Then again, the crystal enemies in the Duke's Archives are really resistant to physical damage, so that's when you might need an elemental instead of applying resin every 2 minutes.

Both can be useful at times. In general, at least before Anor Londo, elementals are your best bet. I'm gonna go with; "Diversity is key".

The diversity strategy is definitely seeming more and more important. Now that I have access to the Giant Blacksmith, I carry 3 of each for Dagger, Battle Axe, and Light Crossbow. One +15, one lightning, and one fire.

For armor right now I am wearing whatever keeps me under weight and has high resistances, fire, lightning, and magic protection. I just throw on the Steel Protection ring to buffer low physical defense.

Been having fun too carrying Dusk Crown, Bellowing Dragon ring, and the ring that doubles your casts (can't think of the name right now).

I finished my SL1 run a month ago, and a few things that I learned:

    - A Divine light crossbow is stronger than a +15.  I didn't know that until someone here pointed it out.

    - Aside from bleed, the club's biggest asset, for me, was the stun effect.  As long as you had some stamina regen, you could take down a big serpent soldier by constantly interruptin its attack.

    - Mobility is the only thing that will keep you alive over armor.  By the end I was just wearing the Crimson torso piece and a waistcloth.  I just learned to keep from getting hit.

    - Make a lightning shortbow even if you don't have the stats.  The lightning damage seems to work even if the physical is borked.  I was still able to one-shot enemies in the burg, and it's still handy for luring in places like Blighttown.

    - In Anor Londo, take out Ornstein first.  Pyro works well.  When you're down to uber-Smaugh, the crossbow can make quick work of him, since he has no armor.  I tried it the other way, and it was ugly.

    - A fire hand-axe is a formidible weapon.  So fast, with little stamina cost, you can cut through skellies in the Catacombs quickly.

    - I hate the Four Kings.  They almost ended my run.  Finally someone suggested this approach:  Assign Great Combustion and Black Flame.  Then, put on one of the rings that gives you an additional att slot.  Assign Power Within.  When you're about to jump in the abyss, cast PW, then quickly switch to the Abyss walking ring.  With a maxed glove and PW, 3 shots of either pyro kills a King.  Take them down fast.  I spent literally HOURS doing this, but made it through eventually.

    Good luck!

    Grass Crest Shield
    Crest Shield
    Dragon Crest Shield

How can you wield those at sl 1? Aren't the stats a little higher?

Grass crest's stamina benefit doesn't require being able to wield it properly either.

Yeah, that's why he's limited to small hammer weapons.  He needs 10 dex for the basic swords, but starts at 9.  Str is no problem.  I was even able to use the Balder shield, which takes 12 str.

Lol, absolutely love the PW trick! Very helpful post all in all as well. Thanks much, definitely trying some of those strategies.

I just started my sl1 run. It really hasnt been bad at all since all my accounts are glass cannons anyways. Only boss I really had a problem with was the capra demon, and biggy and smalls. Idk I just can never dodge biggies lighting slam attack.

Other then that most bosses Ive done first try. Thinking about trying Dark souls 2 on a sl1 too when it first comes out.
