Help me find a game :) Empty Help me find a game :)

Post by Sentiel Sat Aug 17, 2013 6:19 pm

I'm going to have birthday soon and would like to get some good game, preferably a shooter with multiplayer. The problem is that I'm pampered by old games like Halo, CS, UT etc and harbor a strong dislike for most of the modern shooters like CoD and BF.
While all the games I mentioned are FPS, I'd like a third person shooter instead. I like to be able to see my character.

I'm currently struggling to enjoy Spec Ops: The Line. The game was fairly good till lvl 20-ish. Now most of the guys I fight against have max lvl, best gear and just spam grenades and RPGs. It's like high SL gankers in Dark Souls. Posible to beat, but not in a fair fight and definitely not fun to play with. Not for me, at least.

An ideal shooter for me is a game with:

    • Third person camera. Not necessary, but I really prefer to be able to see my character.
    • No level restricted gear. Access to everything from the start, or the stuff has to be picked up / purchased in matches.
    • Certain level of realism. I don't need to care about splinter in my shoe, but there's no way in hell I will accept that someone can survive a headshot.
    • No killcams. This is pretty much impossible though, so feel free to skip this point.
    • At least slightly realistic movement speed. Please no full kevlar, shotgun, LMG, grenades, RPG guys sprinting across the maps like they're Chuck Norris.
    • Moderate ridiculousness. I can accept being shot by a futuristic laser rifle, sent flying from a gravity alterning grenade, but sending a nuke on my head is just too much.
    • Skills.
Faster running? Steady aim? Longer range for throwable weapons? All ok with me.
Able to spawn on a teammate? Dropping a grenade on death? Ability to see enemies through walls? No thanks.
    • Decent melee combat. I'd hate to see a guy homing-lunge at me with a knife from 10 meters to insta kill me by stabbing my toe.
    • Sensible DLC content. I don't wanna buy 6 DLC, subscription, newsletter etc. DLC are ok with me, but everything needs moderation.
    • Option to turn off voice chat. Lot of games lack this and I have to listen to some kid crying about getting killed. No thanks. Playing without any sound at all isn't an option either.
    • Must be for PS3.

Please, if you know of a game that fits at least some of these points, tell me about it.
    Thank you in advance.

Starhawk. It'd be right up your alley.

It's a futuristic shooter with three really unique things.

    1. It has a HEAVY emphasis on vehicles. This isn't just a couple dinky cars, there are (can't remember all the names):
-Hawks, a transformable jet than can transform into a powerful mech at will.
-A speeder bike like in Star Wars, it's very fast, can carry two people, and has the ability to jump.
-A jeep like in Halo, pretty similar
-An Ox Tank, which is a huge tank with powerful weapons
-Grizzlies, they're DLC mechs that are much stronger than Hawks in terms of ground control.
-And Vultures, which are super jetpacks that can get you from point A to point B in the fastest time.

    2. The way you spawn, is BADASS
You spawn by falling from the sky in a drop pod, you can control it mid air, allowing you to land on enemies and vehicles. You select the broad area you want to spawn before you drop. There is also DLC which allows you to get the Pod Launcher which can launch you via pod across the map after you've spawned. People can also set down mobile spawn points to fall in behind enemy lines.

    3. You can BUILD a fortress.
Everything in the game besides the basic shooter mechanics requires rift energy. It's gained over time, from killing enemies, or finding barrels with rift energy in them. You can build:
-Stations for the vehicles mentioned above. They spawn with a freebie, but after that you need to use 1-2 rift energy to get another.
-Walls, which can be used to build a HUGE fortress. Each wall has attachment points on the sides to link to other walls, buildings, and anchors in the stage. They also have two slots for turrets. Walls can be upgraded into gates, which only open for teammates.
-Bunkers, which have links for walls, constantly spawn weapons, and can have three turrets.
-Sniper Posts, which are tall towers with snipers on top.
-Shield Generator, which makes a giant spherical shield which deflects all enemy fire and vehicles.
    -MANY more

It's a very fun game, but can be very frustrating if the other team builds a super fort. There are multiple game modes, and there are some that disallow vehicles if that's not your thing.

The only third person shooters that come to mind that have multiplayer would be Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Mass Effect 3. They're all fun games to play and while Mass Effect has a disappointing conclusion to the story I'd still recommend it.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm glad somebody found time to answer my post. happy

I'll get to Starhawk later on and will adress Grin's post first.

I've never played RDR and GTA IV online, although I completed them offline. I'd prefer to wait for GTA V, since I guess IV will be shutdown sooner, or later after V's release. It doesn't seem as a good financial investment atm. Never been a big fan of GTA, but if the online is good then why not. Although the single player has pretty horrible shooting mechanics, so I can't imagine an online mode with those that would be fun.

RDR seems to have one of things I don't like. Gear unlockable by levels.
    http://reddead.wikia.com/wiki/Rank_Unlocks_in_Redemption_Multiplayer
I haven't digged around too much, so maybe this won't be a problem, but it seems to be as of now.
If the weapons in online are the same as offline, then the differences between them are far too big to ignore the level up system.

I spend a lot of hours playing ME3 multiplayer and like it, even though the thing is basically in beta test phase to this day. The shear amount of bugs and glitches is horrible. The problem with this game is that it's co-op only. Even though that's fun, it's fun for a limited time. Enemies get boring and when you can solo even Platinum difficulty the game just loses anything to offer to it's player. I also get a lot of hate from the players of the online because I love using Shadow and Slayer which are largely frowned upon, although I never bothered to find out the reason behind this.

I've spent more than two years playing Metal Gear Online, so my standards for a good third person shooter are extremely high. The only game I can think of that comes close is Ghost Recon Future Soldier, but from spending several hours in the beta, I could tell that the classes are poorly balanced with Engineer being very OP and people tend to play it like CoD - Rambo style. Never understood that...

Because they don't push out a AAA title every year like most big developers.

    Returning to Starhawk.
I saw a few gameplay vids on Youtube and played single player demo.
I'm not certain about how you get weapons in the game yet, but so far, it seems to have a big emphasis on building and vehicles and puts infantry on the secondary role..
In the vids, I really disliked how the player built a big sniper tower out of the blue to snipe his enemies, or how he died and pod dropped right on the guy who just killed him.
Not saying it's a bad game, but that's not what I'm looking for. I don't mind sci-fi. Heck, I used to love Halo, but this is way over the top and looks chaotic as hell.

as mentioned, starhawk sounds like your best bet. red dead is nice...but, no pun intended the online seemed dead last time i played it.

my 2 cents. try killzone, 3 specifically. it is NOT third person. But it is a very excellent shooter, in my opinion. It has your typical death match mode. But where it really shines is warzone, its a objective game but the objectives are randomized, same ones every game but no set order. Its just announced, 'body count, kill as many enemies as you can' or 'find the objective area, place explosives and defend the area until it explodes' or 'assassination, (target is marked on the map) find the marked enemy and kill him, or if its your team defend them'.

for your criteria...there is no level restricted gear so much, you have to rank up but any class earns the same point to spend on things, it is progressive you have to earn one before the next, so maybe it is level restricted in that sense. But its not bad, in general it is decently balanced.

the kkill cam is more a battlefield type, but your view. You see yourself in 3red person till you die or get revived.
movement is very clunky, your guns are heavier if they are heavy guns. Your run speedisn't crippling, but its different. The guy with the pistol will move faster than you, and the lmg will move faster than the rpgRPG. It works for me.
rerealistic ness is where kill zone wins. There is nothing to crazy, one level has a much armor...but its as much a weakness as a weapon. You become a very easy target and be shot down very easy, so you trade firepower for a red x on yourself. There are jet packs in one level to, but again not overpowered at all.

there are a couple perks, but not really. You get small bonus for reload speed and damage and the like, but its all in game based, you have to earn them each match for the match. And they are not game breaking

its my favorite shooter so far and i've I've played all the ones mentioned. I think it has a demo, so check it out there at least.

Post by Sentiel Sun Aug 18, 2013 10:03 am

I expected as much with GTA V coming and all.

I've played Killzone 3 for some time. It was fun, especially Warzone. But by the time I was done with it, all Warzone objectives have been trivialized by map knowledge. Also, while one of the better FPS games, it still is a fully fledged CoD clone with everybody running around like Rambo with absolutely no interest in their own survival.

As for the killcam. I'm a sniper. In the correct meaning of the word. Meaning that I prefer to camp, wait and end the game with perhaps only a few kills, but enjoying every thrilling minute of waiting to get someone into my scope. Killcams and movable spawnpoints kill this playstyle for me. Killcam shows my location and even my gear (depending on the game). Spawning on teammates, items, or by choosing a location combined with killcam enables the guy I just killed to find me and kill me in matter of seconds with absolutely no work on his part. he doesn't have to find me, track me and get to me. The game tells him where I am and even allows him to spawn near me five seconds after he died.

I also prefer to use melee up close. In essence, I specialize on sniping and close quarters combat. Long range to short range shootouts bore me. I played far too many games for these to be entertaining anymore, especially when people tend to play while focusing only on their killcount instead of survival. Makes everybody look like headless chicken, running around the map, gunning everything that moves in their path.

As for the Starhawk. The more I see from the game, the less I like it. As I said previously, it seems to focus too much on vehicles and structures. Vehicles are alright with me as long as they're meant as a form of transportation and if not, then the infantry has a chance against every vehicle in a fair fight, without specialized gear. For example. In Halo, I can snipe a tanks driver, kick him out, or disable the vehicle with grenades. I don't want to have to change my class to use RPG, or something similar to get rid of the vehicle. Nor do I want to be have to use another vehicle, or mounted gun to get rid of the enemy vehicle. I'm used that all I need is sniper rifle, grenades, knife and skill and be able to defeat anything in the game. For example in BFBC2 I quit the game when I found out that my M95 is not capable of shooting through a helicopter **** windshield and kill the pilot.

When I mentioned movement speed, I also meant chaos. I presumed that mentioning movement speed is enough. It seems I was wrong. What I meant was that I want the game to be as less chaotic and fast paced as possible, while not being turn based, or RTS of course. No matter how I look at Starhawk, it's a huge pile of chaos with all the explosions, vehicles, building and all. that would bore me very quickly. Sorry. sad

I think it's impossible for a shooter to be fast paced and not chaotic, they're pretty much proportional- more pace = more chaos. It just benefits the kind of player who can twitch kill with weapons.

Fact is people play for kill count and not survival because it's more fun. Killing more people and dying regularly is more fun than barely killing anyone without dying yourself in general.. That fact added to fast pace causes games to be chaotic.

I'd associate 3rd person shooters with the slower pace and focus on survival you're wishing for, but honestly I think you're asking for a game with FPS mechanics, but with a slow pace and focus on survival and with a 3rd person perspective.. Honestly I don't think there's a game like that out there other than maybe Metal gear solid (but even then it doesn't have the mechanics you want).

Lol, everything you want is what Starhawk is essentially. It's fast paced if you want it to be, but you can take a simple approach. Don't knock it 'til you try it. It's pretty fun.

I don't need the game to be fast paced at all, because I actually do prefer to have only a few kills, but no deaths. When I play games like this I always imagine myself being in a real life combat situation. Running around like an crazed idiot would only get me and my team killed. I prefer to cautiously move around the map, observe enemy team and take out a vulnerable target here and there. Placing traps, luring enemy into crossfire of my team, sniping, assassination. I enjoy shooter games if I can play them this way, but not many allow that, thanks to being overly chaotic, fast paced and full of things that ruin this kind of playstyle, like killcams, random spawns etc.

You can imagine I get a LOT of hate for doing this. big grin
When I go run around and shoot like everybody else, I get bored quickly, but just hiding somewhere with my sniper rifle, waiting for my target is the most thrilling thing ever.

My longest experience with online shooters comes from Metal Gear Online. More specificaly from one of it's game modes, Team Sneaking.

In this game, you had two teams fight each other over objectives. One team was completely invisible, except for their knife, shadows and footprints, but only had a tranquilizer handgun, knife and smoke grenades. The other team was visible and had the full arsenal of assault rifles, grenades and other lethal weapons. Invisible team had to steal the objective and bring it to the goal while visible team had to guard it and prevent that. There was the option of taking out the entire enemy team to win too. As soon as a member of the invisible team got injured by the enemy team in any way, his whole team will become visible for five seconds. Lastly, this mode gave every player only one life. If you die, you have to spectate the rest of the game. It was a battle of wits more than fast reflexes.

I would have said Red Faction Guerrilla (with fully destructible buildings, with physics and ****, not like BF3), but multiplayer is deserted.

That thing has 3rd person, nice melee(that also affects walls), all non cosmetic weapons accessible, has one DLC that adds a prequel SP campaign, good graphics, great gameplay, movement is fast, but the game is set on a terraformed mars, so it's justified.

Even if not for the multiplayer, singleplayer itself is really good, but the plot is kinda shallow, though with a lot of references to previous red faction games and easter eggs.
Fortunately the gameplay, soundtrack and graphics are great, and very unique (seriously, goddamn destructible everything), and there are some truly badass locations and weapons.

Don't play it in any language other than english, the voice acting is horrible.

    Also, robots with jetpacks.

I liked Red Faction back on PS2, but the ones on PS3 aren't as hot. The first one was good, but it's so old I fear it's going to be deserted and the second one was so bad I quit after a few minutes.

I noticed nobody mentioned The Last of Us, so here I am! If you've already played it, good on you. If you haven't, though, then I highly recommend it. It is a third-person shooter with a pretty fantastic story, and on top of that, it has a wonderful multiplayer. It may not be everybody's cup of tea, because it is a slower, more methodical type of game. It's 4v4, with limited ammo and respawns, and teamwork is the biggest factor for success. It's just tons of fun. big grin

Everybody talks about the single player, so I didn't even know it has multiplayer. Is it co-op only, or does it have a competetive modes as well?
So far, it sounds as the best choice.

    Better love story than Twilight?

Story aside, I'm interested in log term value of the game. That's why I'm asking about online multiplayer instead of single player. Games made in the past ten years usually (there are exceptions) have so poor single player campaign that they become worthless after you see credits for the first time, which usually takes about 4-6 hours. I can buy two-three movies and save a lot of cash, yet get the same amount of entertainment.

It has single player and competitive multiplayer, but no co-op. It's single player is really the biggest strength of the game IMO, but my roommates really seemed to like the multiplayer too.

I've watched a few multiplayer vids of Last of us and I am quite puzzled.
On the other hand, it seems you have to earn money, or points and use them to craft ammo and explosives in the matches, but at the same time it looks like you have to unlock perks and gear in some way. Can someone elaborate? Without story spoilers if possible.

So, the multiplayer mode is called Factions. The gist of it is that you are the leader of a group, trying to survive and grow over a twelve week period of time. During a match, you earn parts for crafting items, reviving people, getting downs and kills, and the like. You use those parts to buy more ammo or body armor (parts are really only used in-game). Also, for every kill and significant thing you do, you earn supplies. Those have no impact in-game, but once the round finishes, it shows your parts total, converts it to supplies, and then adds it to your supplies total. Every match, you have to earn a certain amount of supplies to keep the people in your clan healthy and alive, and the amount of supplies needed grows with the population. And you earn more weapons and player customization things as your clan population increases, and as the amount of days you've survived goes up. Oh, and each match is considered a day. Hopefully this isn't too confusing. x)

It's not confusing, but it's definitely unnecessarly complicated.
I see there is a strong emphasis on teamwork then, which doesn't bode well with my lone wolf nature.

The weapons and other stuff you unlock in these twelve weeks carry over, or are lost after the twelve weeks end?

Are the weapons balanced, with equal capabilities? I mean, can a basic 9mm handgun kill in one headshot max lvl and gear player? The main reason why I hate level dependant content in shooter games is because I always end up playing against someone with much higher lvl, with access to things I can't fight against, or gives the player huge advantage over me. I don't want to lose in a shooter game because the other guy had higher level and weapons that can one shot me across the whole map while I can hardly put a dent in his HP. That's RPG territory. I want player skill to determine who wins and who dies, not level, or gear.

    EDIT:
I've just saw the Listen Mode.
    doh

It is quite balanced, because you can't level up the guns (well, you can, but it doesn't make them stronger, just gives them faster reload speed, firing speed, more bullets per clip, etc), and the leveled up guns are only for each round. Also, there are "perks" of a sort, but they just make you use healthkits faster, or revive faster, or things like that. Yeah, everything carries over at the end of the twelve weeks. The only bad thing about playing against a high level player is skill, really, because you have access to the same things as he/she does. OH! Also, there's a crafting system: scattered around the maps are toolboxes full of crafting supplies. You can use them to make things. However, there's always a tradeoff: you can use certain supplies to make a molotov ****, which is a one-hit kill, or you can use the exact same items to craft a healthkit. Do you want a smoke bomb, or an actual bomb? Things like that. I guess you'd just have to go and play the game to really experience, but it's well worth it. The Last of Us is the only game that I've pre-ordered thus far, and it is probably my favourite online experience, excluding being a SunBro.
