How the Forum Has Evolved and Changed Empty How the Forum Has Evolved and Changed

Post by Jiub of Carim Wed Sep 04, 2013 9:20 pm

I've been reading a lot of threads on the forum lately. I haven't been on here regularly in a few months since I was kinda burned out on Dark Souls after clocking over a 1000 hours haha. I've noticed a lot of people saying the forum has changed. I was wondering if some could explain what exactly people mean by this. The reason I posted here instead of the forum dicussion section is: 1) because I was wondering if it has anything to do with how the game has progressed getting closer to Dark Souls II and 2) cause I'm an idiot. haha any help?

It's gotten better, because I'm here.

I actually have no clue how it's changed, but I think part of it is the whole nostalgia filter thing.

I don't think it's better or worse, just people's opinions on it.

It's a combination of many things. Some people observe a change in demeanour in people towards each other, spam, disrespect etc.

Ironically a lot of people saying it are people who've only been here a few months, but it is very true. Things are a bit different. To me it's down to lack of new content and the forum becoming stagnant from that. It's not to me a true change, but things are slipping as there is nothing for the forum to focus on

some few people that were a great joy to the other forum members have taken a breather, a break, and in some cases just left gone.. I think this may have had an affect on the forum, well it certainly has for me.. I miss their familiar avatars and good posts sad

Agreed Serious.  There seems to be more negativity going on recently.  But, there is also less posting.  So, that may make it seem like more negativity.  For example, if 3 people make threads complaining and there are only 10 new posts per day, as opposed to 30 new threads 6 months ago, then it seems like there is more negativity. (Just made up numbers for this example).

But, just look at all the help threads, all the tourneys, all the fight clubs.  Just look at the active off-topic section, where people go just to stay in touch with each other, for reasons other than Dark Souls.  So many good things here.

And, as we get new members here, things will always change.  This will become more noticeable as the DkS release gets closer.  With an influx of new members, there will be an adaptation phase.  Eventually things will equilibrate and we'll still have a great and welcoming forum.

The Problem i have noticed is the newer people not respecting the older people and the older people demanding respect from the newer people

So much of this is true.  And if I could add something...there was a time when this was a smaller group playing a game that most of the world didn't know existed (Demon's Souls).  I remember Fex from the old PS boards.  That whole group of regulars struck me with how helpful and welcoming they were, and it's carried over.  Because of the complexity, the difficulty, and the mysterious nature of the game, a sort of camraderie formed between early members, something that I think still shows itself here.

I think that as the series has grown in population, the forum has drawn in a lot of new people who fit that mould, but also some who may not have a similar attitude and tend to be a bit more confrontational.  It's a natural evolution, and the simple truth is, I find the mods here to be extremely fair-minded when "situations" arise.  So while the negativity is sometimes evident, it's also true that it gets curbed fairly quickly as well.

This is still, in my mind, the best forum group that I belong to.  And I'm not just saying that because I love the game.  I honestly enjoy reading a great many of the posts and replies here on a daily or semi-daily basis.  You can actually disagree with people and not have it turn into a goofy flame war.

It is the way life is.  Older people have lived longer and have experiences and knowledge younger people don't have.  But the youngsters think they already have things figured out and that there time is soooo much different.  The old guard are frustrated because they're trying to be helpful and share what they know with those new to the game, but the new gamers have this false sense that they already know it all because of the playtime they've had and YouTube videos.  It's not really disrespect, just indifference.

As an older person, my advice to the old guard would be to have patience. Eventually, the youngsters will experience life's same ups and downs and will realize the old guard was only trying to be helpful.

To the young blood, listen politely and don't be argumentative. Only time will tell if the advise given was wisdom or not.
