General damage output question Empty General damage output question

Post by KoltWiolet Sun Sep 22, 2013 3:47 pm

I'm currently playing with an INT build (NG+ PvE only) and I've been trying out different melee weapons to see which one works best.

I ended up with an Enchanted Uchigatana+5 which I'm very happy with, but thought that the Moonlight Greatsword would be worth a try, since it scales S with INT. So I upgraded the MLGS to +5, looked at the stats and was a bit dissapointed, that it doesn't beat the Uchi in terms of damage output. I gave it a go anyways – just for fun – because getting it from Seath was a real pain (took me like 15 tries). At some point I switched back to my Uchi and was surprised that it does less damage than the MLGS.

How is that possible? The stats menu says that the Uchi has an attack power of 494 and the MLGS has 480. But if I hit a rat for example, I do 316 damage with the Uchi and 373 with the MLGS.

I thought after 15+ playthroughs I finally know how everything in the game works, but it looks like I'm missing something here.

    My current stats are:
    SL 133
    Vit 30
    Att 20
    End 40
    Str 16
    Dex 40
    Res 8
    Int 50
    Faith 8

Would be great if someone could help me out here. happy

the uchi has to go through 2 different resistences. magic, and physical. the MLGS however, only goes through physical. this means even though its damage is slightly lower, its output will be higher in the long run.

also, with your stats upgrading it to +15 and getting the darkmoon blade spell may have been a better choice. hindsight is always 20/20 though

also, the MLGS has that kick *** 2-handed R2. just make sure to keep a healthy supply of repair powder around

    Number 1.

The MLGS does pure Magical Damage.

Number 2. Darkmoon Blade is a Miracle, it wouldn't work nor would it be effective.

Ok then, now that it's out of the way.

Whenever you use a weapon with split damage, such as an enchanted uchi, (Physical and Magic), the damage goes through both defenses. So both your physical damage and your magic damage are lessened.

Also, a lot of enemies do tend to have higher Physical defense then magic defense, so if you have two weapons, (one that does 400 magic AR, and the other 400 physical AR, the 400 magic AR will tend to do a little more damage.)

Now, if he does want to do a buff, he should use Crystal Magic Weapon. It's only a 25 int req and it can add a great amount of magic AR to his weapon. At his stats, a crystal magic weapon with TCC would add 410 magic AR. Or with Logan's Catalyst, it would add 330.4.

I would recommend using a Uchi+15, buffed with Crystal Magic Weapon, using a Logan's Catalyst. (So you have three casts instead of only one) And have the Moonlight Greatsword available to swap too, for weaker enemies or for when you are out of the buff.

thanks for correcting me. either way i knew that MLGS only did 1 kind of damage, so that point still stood. as for the DMB i meant the intelligence alternative, crystal magic weapon. i just didn't think that particular answer through. sorry for the slight misinformations, and thank you stray for correcting me

Perfectly fine, nothing wrong in trying to help a fellow player.

Sounds logical. Pretty obvious actually, but I never thought of it that way. Thanks a lot!

In fact I already have an Uchi+15 and Crystal Magic Weapon, that's why I put so much Exp into Dex. The thing is, that this play style just doesn't appeal to me. I didn't feel comfortable with the limitation of 3 uses of the spell and more importantly it doesn't work with the way I'm using the weapon slots (right hand: sword/catalyst; left hand: shield/bow), because you have to have sword and catalyst equipped at the same time to buff a weapon with a spell. I know it's pretty unusal, because most people play sorcerers with sword and catalyst, but I need to have a shield at hand permanently. Luckily the 40 Dex weren't wasted, because I found that the Enchanted Longbow+5 and also the Enchanted Black Bow of Pharis+5 sucked big time. So now I'm using a Longbow+15 instead.

If you use an enchanted bow, you should be using Moonlight Arrows. At 40 dex, a +15 bow may still be superior, though.

In terms of DPS, (damage-per-second; how quickly a weapon deals damage over time) faster weapons, especially buffed, generally outdo larger weapons. The larger weapons have the advantage of causing bigger single bursts and stunning in fewer hits. If you're going for raw damage as quickly as possible, then, with an Int build and 40 dex, a falchion with CMW is your best friend; a buffed falchion is like a chainsaw. The MLGS has the advantage of range and a higher poise-break value for a single hit besides dealing purely magical damage.
As for your item set; learn to menu-swap and pick up an extra catalyst. That will solve that.

NAH, DON"T LISTEN TO THAT. Painting Guardian Sword is where it's AT.

Sure it's shorter, but it swings faster, does bleed, and it's stronger.

between the 2 its pretty much a matter of preference. the painting guardian does have added bleed though so it does come out slightly more on top. not really a big difference though. considering the **** people can do with enough skill, this is a rather small problem lol.

i find it odd that dex weapons have so much more variety than STR ones. theres rapiers, katana's, falchions, all with incredibly unique skill-sets, where-as most STR weapons have the same problem, in that they are mostly only good for 2 kinds of attacks. vertical and horizontal. its a lot like the zanbatou from rurouni kenshin. actually, thats a weapon i'd like to see in the game......

Well, if you're doing pve, then the main downside to the PGS, (its' range) doesn't really matter as much, because you shouldn't be attacking when you're going to get hit anyway. And like I said, it swings faster, has bleed, and does some great damage, and it's lighter then a Falchion. But really every weapon in the game is a matter of preference, I will never give up my furysword, not ever.
