    Question about the Painting Guardians

Post by BloodTempest on Tue Aug 20, 2013 8:42 am

The Painting Guardians drink from Estus Flasks to heal themselves, does this mean that they are undead?

Or am I mistaken and Estus Flasks actually heal everything regardless of race?

I believe they are undead since most other enemies drink from a flask, like balder knight tower knights and many others, and there consider undead

Seeing as they've been placed there ever since Priscilla was moved into the painting and are unmoving I would say they're undead. The fact that they use estus probably means that they're undead since estus flasks are treasured among the undead.

So the Painting Guardians are a giant group of undead that somehow haven't turned hollow yet?

They're a group of undead (possibly selected by Gwyn) that guard the Painted World. Whether they've hollowed or not I can't say, but there is the possibility that they've hollowed.

But weren't the undead all formerly human? I was under the impression that Gwyn and his followers were all part of some other race. Also, wasn't the undead curse something that happened recently?

They have guarded the Great Painting of
Ariamis for ages, passing their duty down
through generations, but the reason for
doing so passed from all memory long ago.
    ~Painted Guardian Hood description

Looks like they might not be hollow, they might just be undead who have forgotten the reason as to why the guard the painting.

I believe the undead curse was something that started with the dark soul, in other words it's been there since furitive pygmy discovered it.

Also, yes many of Gwyn's followers are of a different race but I don't know if that means they are exempt from hollowing. Artorias, Ornstein, Gough, and Ciarian all seem like they are unable to hollow but strangely it seems as though Gwyn himself turned undead.

Are you sure they're estus and not divine blessings? Seeing how there's divine blessings in that area.

It's most likely, that they're not hollowed. Undead only turn hollow after they have no drive or purpose. This can be seen with almost all people who sell spells. Once they can't offer you anything, they have no reason to keep living. Seen with:
    -Rhea
    -Logan
    -Griggs
    -Laurentious

So since they're set to guard the painting, they still have a purpose.

It says that their duty has been passed down generations. Does it mean generations as in time, or generations as in generations of painting guardians? Like, painting guardians have a 5-9 shift and then they go home to mama Painting guardian and little Toby and when Toby gets old enough maybe he'll be a big strong Painting guardian like his dad, who's real name is Howard? This may open up a whole other lore line just waiting to be dived into!

The Painting Guardians can be nothing but undead since they drink estus. I assume they are special guardians not for Gwyn but for Ariamis chosen by him to guard the painting. He may have devised an order of guardians for his works. I do not think the painted world is the only painted world he has ever made and thus created a secret Order to guard them from the wrong people. So it may as well be generations of painting guardians passing the profession down the family tree.

    "passing their duty down
    through generations"

This would imply that it is generations of people not generations like generation X or generation Y.  As well it should be mentioned that human might not be the only undead.  We see undead rats, ghouls, and various sorts of creatures that are like that.  There may be undead Giants, or even gods.  Gwyn is undead for example when you face him, he is a hollow in fact.

It should be mentioned that the Darksign is linked to bonfires and is related to the Linking of the Flame.  The Undead Curse came about seemingly after Gwyn linked himself with the fire.  There is a clear period of time where people age and are not undead.  However at some point after Gwyn's disappearance the undead became an issue.  So by going against the natural order which is the idea of dying, Gwyn unknowingly released the curse of Undeath upon the land via the Darksign.  Part of the idea of the two endings is dealing with the curse of undeath.  Linking the fire and prolonging the age of fire, keeping bonfires around and the undead.  Leaving the fire snuffed out, causing people to die again while removing the curse.

Then it only leaves the question....if not human, what are painting guardians? Maybe they are similar to ciaran judging her size.

Painting Guardians use the animations and models of human characters.  They are the same height and size even so there is no different scaling.  If one goes highly technical as well I'm pretty sure judging by their body mass they aren't hollow, though that's a bit of an iffy thing to say.

They might be human, they might be demi-gods like the Knights of Gwyn, maybe they are a mix.

I do think they are not hollow, since they also switch weapons which to me suggest a level of intelligence and I don't recall a hollow actually doing that.

As for what they are. Demi-gods sound likely as it explains their presence in Anor Londo before times of the undead outbreak. If not demi-gods then they may be hand humans hand picked by Ariamis to guard his works. Whatever works for you I guess.

Hollows are smart enough to block, and use firebombs from atop a rooftop. I don't think switching weapons is beyond them.

On a related note, does anyone know if there is a connection between Ciaran and the Painting Guardians? If you look at the design of the guardian armor, it bears a striking resemblance to Ciaran's. Also, the moveset of the PG Sword resembles the moveset of the tracers, almost as if they were taught the fighting style by Ciaran. Just a thought though.

Good Point. That the leaves the idea of them being hollow pretty much in the open then.

As for relation to Ciaran, it looks likely, but Ciaran was a Lord's Blade and I think only women were Lord Blades. They may a male counterpart (since they have a standard male figure) or a royal family, for example, would assign a daughter to the Lord Blades and a son would become a painting Guardian. Personally I think a Lord Blade sounds a bit more Impressive.

I spent the day thinking about the connection between Ciaran and the Guardians. It could be possible that Ciaran is Priscillas mother (I know, a stretch, but just hear me out). Aside from the relationship to the painted guardians, if you accept them as being some kind of the decedents of those trained by Ciaran, it raises the question of why are they guarding the painting in the first place. The armour states that they dont even know why anymore. I believe that they were originally trained by Ciaran to protect the painting which holds her daughter, to prevent anyone from finding her and harming her.
But to the point, here is my argument. Ciaran is know for two things: The Lords Blade were basically stealth assasins, going from the description on the Lords Blade Set, and for using very Dex-y weapons. Now take a look at Priscilla. During the boss fight the first thing that she does is go invisible, which, needless to say, is a very stealthy move, or at least a sign that she was trained in the stealth arts. And secondly, the weapons that you get from Priscilla are also very Dex-y weapons. The dagger from her tail and the Lifehunt Scythe both rely heavily on dex scaling to be effective.
Please feel free to tear this theory to pieces if you would like to.

It is plausible aside from the fact priscilla not only towers over ciaran but she is half dragon and put in there to protect the lords from her lifehunt which is unique to her. Having said that, she may as well be ciaran's daughter but in her time away was taken by seath and cruelly experimented on behind her back, thus making priscilla what she is.

Ciaran may have pleaded for her life to be spared son instead a world is created for priscilla to inhabit and it is protected by guards trained by ciaran. In her time of struggle maybe Artorias came to comfort her and that's why she is in debt to him.
