Souls' games just make everything else feel inferior. Empty Souls' games just make everything else feel inferior.

Post by Back Lot Basher Wed Aug 14, 2013 6:52 pm

A few days ago I started playing Demon's Souls again from scratch with two friends who are new to the game (but who did play Dark Souls).  Before that I'd been playing Dark Souls pretty hard for months, after taking a break from it for a bit.

This back-to-back marathon of both games has taught me something.  IMO, this franchise makes everything else I play feel inferior.  It hasn't just set a new bar for videogames; it used that bar to smash most other videogames over the head.  I can't put my finger on what it is.  I've played a ton of some other games in the last year or two:  Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Dragon's Dogma, and while I enjoyed many elements of all of them, they always end up feeling inferior in some way to the Souls franchise.

These games get in your head like no other game I can think of.  I'm guessing most people here get that, and know exactly what I mean, which is why I see so many familiar avatars day in and day out.

I don't really know why I posted this.  Just feeling the Souls' love these days.

    Cheers.

I know exactly what you mean. I just finished The Last of Us and went right back to Dark Souls. I was hoping last of us would hold my attention long enough to ween me off Dks but sadly no. I have started Demons again after reading skares new play through thread.

Yeah that happened to me when I first started PVP, I tried playing another game and wasn't satisfied with it and switched back after an hour of playing.

I don't get it too much. I love the souls games and I've played a lot of them, but I can still play other games, but I appreciate different things in other games. No other games give the same adrenaline rush or make your heart pound the same way. When playing souls you feel like you're fighting for your life, no other game is like that

My opinion on why it makes everything inferior is because the Souls series is so gameplay focused and the fact that the gameplay controls are just near perfection. Too many game play out like movies and give gaming a bit of an afterthought. Another common problem I see is when games boast about having an open world but offer nothing more but boring hills and mountains with no real objective added to them. In the Souls series everything is there for a reason and designed like a platformer, challenging you to work out how to get around obstacles while letting you use any tools at your disposal instead of that bullcrap system of limiting abilities that game designers put in so you don't break the game early. It's hard to go into games that don't have the challenge and freedom you get with the Souls series. Is it any wonder why big budget games get sold back so quickly if the core gameplay is so lacking.

This is exactly how I feel.

I get a new game, play it for an hour, then go back to Dark Souls and not touch that game for a long, long time.

Haha, thats exactly what I tried as well, except I did not even finish The Last of Us before going back to demon's souls/dark souls. Thing is, I think The Last of Us was a terrific game overall, but when you have been playing a lot of different video games for around 20 years, you have pretty much seen everything before. That is however where the Souls games stand out. There really arent any other games like them out there.

If Dark Souls or Demon's Souls was available on the Vita, I'd already own one. Might get fired from work, though.

Note to self: Win the lottery so I can play Souls all day long.

This is my problem. I can get into the stories of other games, but the gameplay is just always lacking for me. I tried to play Dragon's Dogma and I didn't last very long -- it felt too much like Skyrim where you just wave your arms about and there is no real sense of true combat or connecting with your enemy. And while critical attacks in Dark Souls are kinda silly when you think about it (animations "clicking" and changing weirdly when you get within 90 degrees of the back, or whatever), it frustrates me that other games don't have similar mechanics.

Why is Dark Souls so amazing?
I want to be able to enjoy other games again.
I'm looking forward to a handful of games, The Last Of Us is also one of them. But I can see even if I love it that it won't have much replay value, like Uncharted. I was never this addicted to a singular game before Dark Souls. I seriously can't stop playing or watching YouTube videos.

I'd take a Triple DS with it's amazing gaems (MH3U, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team just to name a few) over the current state of Souls' community/PvP.

I agree, but what I think the OP is saying is that when he plays through the campaigns of other titles, in the end, it doesn't, in his view, measure up to the experience these games have given him.

That is exactly what I meant.  I enjoy a bit of PvP just like everyone else, but I spend the majority of my time in the SP and coop.  And it really does come down to the excellent gameplay.  I remember reading one of my first reviews for Demon's Souls, and the writer commented on the fact that you die a lot.  He also followed up on that statement by saying, you won't really mind, because the combat is just so much fun.  This sold me, and I never looked back.  Other devs and pubs really need to spend some quality time with these games, and get a sense of just how to create solid melee combat.

I think one of the strengths of Dark Souls is it's attraction of hardcore fans, in that people who might not like this game REALLY don't like this game. But people who like this game really LOVE this game. There never seems to be people who feel so-so about it, and there are few people who play for very long that don't fully enjoy the game. This community is one of the most hardcore, passionate, and at times obsessive group of players of any series out there and certainly most of those on these forums are at least moderately invested in it.

I know that while the game might not be objectively the best (not that there even is such a thing), on a personal, subjective level I enjoy it far more than most other games out there. Is it perfect? No. Do I love it to death? Absolutely.

Actually, it was something very similar to this that I got back into video games for at all after I quit altogether early this year.
I had rented (for a long time) Dark Souls, beat a single playthrough, and then returned it so my family could finally watch a movie. I later did the same thing with Dragon's Dogma. Near the end of DD, I decided I was going to quit video games once I completed it and focus on 'real life.' A while passed, and I decided to rent Skyrim. I did so, and had basically no enjoyment, interest, or dislike while playing the game. I was just "Eh." Then I rented Kingdoms of Alamur: Reckoning after hearding some things about it that apealed to me-and quickly returned it after getting bored. I realized better, then, just how DIVINELY AMAZING Dark Souls (and to a lesser extent, Dragon's Dogma) was-and I had loved it before.
Dark Souls is the only game to ever replace The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask as my favorite video game.

Yup, Dark Souls definitely replaced my favourite games too. I read an article I think in PC Gamer recently (September 2013 issue?) for the top 100 games of all time (which is a terrible list, by the way) and something that one of the editors said about it was that he had always had some favourite games, but never a definitive single favourite game until Dark Souls and I feel the same. My favourites were always, like, Elder Scrolls, Metal Gear Solid, and Vagrant Story (a LOT like Dark Souls), and some others I can't even remember in the moment, but now I can say without hesitation that Dark Souls is my favourite game.

I'm still interested in hardcore Dark Souls' players opinions of Dragon's Dogma. I had trouble getting into it, but would love to hear what other Dark Souls lovers really liked in comparison. Feel free to PM me if you have great things to say about DD.

Also, someone else mentioned Saints Row 4. SR3 was one of the few (4?) games that I've platinumed (the others being Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, and Walking Dead (which you get just from beating the game)), but it definitely felt like a chore to 100% that game whereas I continued to play Dark Souls sooo much after platinuming and obviously continue to (after, like dex builds, strength builds, an int build, a faith build, SL1, NG+7, bow only, fist weapon only, full Havel's ninja flip build, etc...).

I learned of Dragon's Dogma on these very forums, when people said they thought it was the only game worth taking DkS out of the console for.  I loved it, and played for well over 100 hours for a few months.  Around the time I picked up the expansion edition, I started to feel a sense of burnout, though, and haven't been back.  I'd still put it in my top 5.

I enjoy the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games a lot, but the gameplay feels really rough after coming off Dark Souls (moreso in ES, since they are close in style).  I also like the Mass Effect series.  Beyond those games, I find I have a really hard time finishing many other games, because they all grow repetitive.  I've got some good friends that I've played with regularly since 2006, and we enjoyed the Borderlands and Dead Island games for the coop.
