Blueblood Build. (BBS + LW)
Makoto or dual Hiltless build. (Max bleed + Dex)
Adjudicator Build (MC + Shrine Miracles + CW)
Godfist Build (FoG + Miracles)
Marksman/Bullseye Build (Bows, X-bows, and projectiles of choice only, I recommend White Bow, Viscous CLB, Lava Bow or Gargoyles X-Bow.)
My personal favorites. Or try a Cosplay build.

IMO the best build for a first run is a Faith Build. Use a +5 blessed Great Axe, +5 adjudicator shield on your back, leather armor, Second Chance & Wrath of God. Shoot for sl 120-130 (for PVP purposes). Take your faith & vitality stats all the way to 50. Also invest just enough to have a decent bow (otherwise you will never kill enough crystal lizards to level your weapons). Enjoy!
I am actually fonder of DeS than DkS. Don't get me wrong, many improvements were made with DkS. I can't excactly place why I like DeS better. It is either my disgust with FROM choosing to use P2P instead of dedicated servers or just the fact that I miss the 1000's of hours my wife and I spent playing DeS with our friends (does that circle back to P2P, lol?).

I too am bias of Demons Souls. Waiting on DeS2. 
The lore was more straightforward and along with the world just more Gothic and Dark IMO. I've had about enough of 'mythology of the gods' storylines in games.

crbngville2, I remember you from all those discussions on the Playstation boards...man, those were the early days, when most of the world had never heard of Demon's Souls. Amazing how it's become one of the next big games on the slate. Back then we were just trying to figure out all the secrets!
