Sounds in the Painted World Empty Sounds in the Painted World

Post by Scurrilous Straggler Wed Oct 23, 2013 12:28 pm

As previously mentioned in the Peculiar Doll thread, there are some additional sounds in the Painted World that doesn't appear obvious or even audible until some time has passed. I decided to stand around for a while and record them so people can hear what I'm talking about. The thunder can be heard at the start and through the entire thing, getting progressively louder as the video moves on. The wolves start at about 20 seconds into this video and get louder and more frequent as time passes. At about 2 and 1/2 minutes in some wind starts whipping up too. It's pretty interesting as I never really noticed them until I randomly sat around for a while waiting to be summoned a few weeks ago. I wonder where the wolfs could be lurking and does this mean the Painted World could be a lot larger than just this castle?

Edit: You might want to turn up the voume some times.

Thanks for following through, Scurrilous. The wolves interest me the most, I wonder what the connection is.

Wish I could have got it done earlier lol. The wolves are the most interesting to me as well. It's probably just flavour sounds, but it's bizarre and a bit out of place.

Hmm what is exactly out of place, or weird, about the wolves? The Painted World is a large, snowy place, it makes sense for wolves to live there, and provide us with nice ambient sounds.

We already have dogs, wolves are surely not a big stretch...

The only sound on the Painted World that piqued my interest is that special theme that plays when you're near the edge on the Xanthous King Jeremiah area.

It's out of place because of the area it's in. The Painted World is just that castle area, as far as we know. There aren't any wolves around, or dogs for that matter, that I saw any sign of. Unless my memory is not functioning properly. What with the creatures that /are/ there, it seems a little weird to hear animals which don't make an appearance. It makes me wonder if the Painted World is larger than just the castle. Not being able to visually identify a sound source always weirds me out a bit :)

I don't think it's just the castle. You can see surrounding areas in the background, I am sure they are also part of the world and the source of all these sounds. The castle is just where the exiles and sinners are imprisoned.

Lol, I do as well. As for the sounds... it just seems bizarre to me. And that it takes a while for them to start up. Like you have to wait around for the track to start up with the sounds.

Something dirty? I can't see it myself...

In this screenshot you can see how the painted world is bigger than castle, making wild wolves living there something not so strange. This is the other side of the bridge:

As you see, the Painted World just goes on even beyond the area you can travel to, also evidenced by the background mountains you can see from the castle. There's no magic barrier or abyss limiting it. The castle is just where the exiles and sinners were thrown because that's where the actual painting drops you.

Anyways, speaking about weird sounds...what about the titanite Demon breathing you can hear when you defeat the Moonlight Butterfly? You can only hear it just after the boss died, then never again.

Yea I know it looks bigger, but not being able to go to any of those places to investigate still makes it seem like it's only that castle. Like the rest is just painting backdrop or something. I understand constraints and such in the game, but it would have been nice to visit those places to see what lurks around.

As for the titanite Demon after the Butterfly... I don't think I ever heard it lurking. I'll have to make a new character and run over there.. where abouts do you hear it and is it directly after the Butterfly is defeated?

For PC I just use fraps and render with AVS, but for 360 and PS3 I use Hauppauge HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition.

Picked up a suround sound headset there recently for pc and found myself just listening in a lot of the areas. Should give dxtory a go, less framerate drops.

Don't really have the money to buy any programmes and I'm fine with what I use. I'm not doing it professionally so what I have is good for me.

Ah, sorry, I disappeared for a while and did not answer this.

I always hear the titanite Demon breathing when I kill the Moonlight Butterfly. I mean on the exact moment, when the butterfly is doing its death animation and you hear the sounds bosses make when they vanish, I hear a single titanite Demon breath. This happens consistently both in my world and in coop, and a friend of mine heard it too.

    Other obscure sounds:

In the Duke's Archives sometimes female whispers can be heard (I guess they reference all the maidens that went through Seath's horrible experiments). These sounds are quite rare and require you to wait for a while.

Also at the bonfire that appears after Nito's defeat, if you quit the game and load the character again, you can hear a single breath-like sound after the normal bonfire sound.

Well, when you climb up the ladder to get the key to escape from the prison, you can hear them clearer and more frequently. I never knew what it was.

I often hang out in areas and zones for a long time with the volume up... I don't recall why I started doing it, but I do it a lot now. Just to hear things I might not have heard. Or maybe some scenery will catch my eye. I like to clear out the areas and just wander around. I notice a lot of things I wouldn't have. It one of my favourite things to do. I have a save with over 200 hours alone on the ps3 that I just spend time in areas listening on. Tragic I know... -_-
