    A Basic Guide for Dark Souls?

    Post by TJByrum on Thu Aug 08, 2013 3:55 pm

    Yeah I know, I can look up walkthroughs, let's plays, and guides and whatnot, but I ain't interested in that.

    I just want a basic list of places to go first and any side notes.  Such as:

    Firelink-->Undead Burg-->Fight Taurus first

    Etc, nothing to long or fancy, that's all.  At least just the beginning, not the entire game.  So far I have went to Firelink, Undead Burg, and defeated the Taurus, so what do you think I should do next?

    Thanks in advance.

    Also, any town/city hubs in game?

    Firelink-->Undead Burg-->Undead Parish-->Lower Undead Burg-->Depths-->Blighttown/Queelag's Domain-->Firelink-->Sen's Fortress-->Anor Londo-->Lord Soul Areas/AOTA-->Kiln

    Optional areas like the Asylum revisit, Painted World, DLC areas, and the Great Hollow/Ash Lake were not added to this list.

    Well there is a wiki on this site lol
    I know you said to make it short, but I went overboard lol. Just skim through, it's some basic stuff that explains some of the different systems in the game.

    I'd say, first playthrough, do whatever style seems to fit. You can have 10 slots so experiment with different styles. The best starting classes are probably Warrior, Bandit, and Knight. Warrior has stats that jet him wield a large amount of weapons. A Bandit starts with good Strength, Endurance, and Vitality. As for weapons, there are three main things you need to know.

    One, having the right stats to wield a weapon. It will be obvious for Strength weapons, as you will swing the weapon very slowly. For insufficient Dexterity, Faith, and Intelligence, the weapon will bounce off of enemies. If you look into the weapon's info, press X or Square will on the item in the equipment screen, make sure you have the right stats to use it. The first square is Strength, then Dexterity, Faith, and Intelligence. There are also another set of squares that will show your weapons scaling. The grade of will scale from E to S, E being the worst, and S being the best. Though the polar opposites are far and few between, you will see them from time to time. So for example, a person with high Dexterity will do better with weapons with better scaling in the second square, Dexterity. And people with other stats will do better with their respective stats. But then there are quality weapons. Bluntly, a weapon with minor scalings in two or more areas. A good example would be the Artorias Greatsword. With the base stats to wield it, it does around 400 damage. But with stats to 40 in each offensive stat, it hits roughly 700. While this is a more PvP type build, it's overkill for PvE. I'd say, select two offensive stats you like, (Strength, Dexterity, Faith, Intelligence) and use weapons that suit your stats well. But don't go over 40-50 for an individual stat. It will barely improve past that point.

    Two, upgrade your weapons. This can be done in 5 ways. One, Andre in the Undead Parish. Two, Rickert in New Londo. Three, Vamos in the Catacombs. Four, the Giant Blacksmith in Anor Londo. And 5, at a bonfire via a weapon smithbox. Each blacksmith can ascend a weapon further past the basic upgrade. Andre can reinforce weapons to Divine +5 and +10, Occult+5, and Standard +10 and +15. Rickert can ascend to Magic +5 and +10, and Enchanted +5. Vamos can ascend to Fire +5 and +10, as well as Chaos +5. And the Giant Blacksmith can ascend to Lighting +5 and Crystal + 5. Many of these require embers, and you can look on the wiki for more info on basic upgrading and such.

    And Three, don't use crutches. Or things that make the game much easier. Try to limit yourself on summons, or asking for good weapons. Things I can think of would be Black Knight weapons, or the Drake Sword. These will make the entire first half of the game easy, and I reccomend staying away from then if you truly want to become better.

    You can check the Wiki from the link up top, or make a thread or two on things you don't understand in the Player Help section.

    Good luck, and Prepare to Die!

    Back to your questions I'd say for the easiest path, it would be:
    Firelink, Burg, Parish, Lower Burg, Blighttown, Graveyard/Catacombs, Sen's Fortress, Anor Londo, Duke's Archives, Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith, New Londo, Tomb of the Giants, then Kiln.

    My route is something like this lol:
    Firelink, Parish, Blighttown, Demon Ruins, Catacombs, New Londo, Sen's Fortress, Anor Londo, Duke's Archives, Tomb of the Giants, Lost Izalith, then Kiln.

    Also, the only "town", is Firelink. Other than that it will just be a couple friendly people along the way.

    Thanks, all I needed to know.  Will keep this link handy in case I need it.

    Very hard game but sort of enjoyable I guess.
