Starting Gift.

Ok, Most people agree that the master key is the best starting gift, but what if we took it out of the equation. What would then become the best?
Well, Turns out I can't change it now, so since master key and old witch's ring are in the lead, stop voting for them. Let's try to see what the most popular is past them.

Old Witches Ring...never heard the dialog before.

Old witches ring. It was my first starting gift and the dialogue is awesome

What the heck is with all the people picking master key? It says right there you shouldn't.

Guess it's just proof the master key is too amazing.

If this keeps up, I'm thinking of taking down the most popular answers and then see what happens with the results. Anyone up with that idea?

I don't see why not. I'd vote for the Pendant, of course.

Sorry, but I'm also gonna get rid of the pendant because it doesn't actually do anything in game, but I know people are gonna pick it anyway.

O-oh gosh...  

I'd have to take the Tiny Being's Ring, while it doesn't do much it's preferable to the other options. The only other unique one is the Old Witch's Ring, which is to me is worthless because I don't even talk to The Fair Lady anymore.

It's not even that unique though, Onionbro gives you one for simply killing 3 basic enemies. If you want the Witch ring you have to give up your Sunlight Maggot.

Sorry for being 'that guy', but I had to vote master key.  It's almost too useful early on, and since I'm playing unpatched, I can't acquire it later on so far as I know.

Nah, it's fine, at least you had the decency to give a reason.

Master key is overrated.  It's very easy to run into lower blighttown through darkroot basin, and moonlight butterfly is one of the game's easier bosses.  Those are the two *main* areas where the master key is relevant.  Cage key ---> shortcut to logan is another one.

However, the other starting gifts are all subpar also.  Of them, old witch ring and black firebombs have the most appeal, the former for lore and the latter to trivialize an early boss or two of your choice.

The reason people pick the master key anyway is that it saves the most time, even if it's only 5-10 minutes tops total time saved it's still more time than any other option, which saves close to none and gives nothing you can't get easily later.

Twin humanities. It was my first pick, it just looked so interesting compared to the others on the list, its still interesting even if I don't pick it anymore...

Master key because I don't use any of the other stuff

The only one besides the Master Key to have ANY practical long-term purpose are the Black Firebombs.  They allow newly started Strength builds to get the Demon's Greathammer on the first playthrough easily.  That's the only reason you'd ever want to take something besides the Master Key when picking something for usefulness.

When disregarding usefulness, the Old Witch's Ring is the only decent option due to how annoying it is to obtain normally in-game being the reason most people never bother to get it to hear the dialogue.

I don't care if I shouldn't, the Master Key is the only useful option on all but the most niche of playthroughs.

lol. I think it's being proven that the Binoculars are an awful choice. Who would take a gift they can grab for themselves the moment they land in Firelink?
