Blighttown's Swamp versus "The Great Swamp"

Post by UndrState on Thu Aug 01, 2013 2:25 pm

    Hi folks,

I'm a little confused, and hoping for some clarification - the swamp in Blighttown, it isn't the "Great Swamp", is it?

    Thanks!

If we're talking about the place that Laurentius came from, no that's not the great swamp. The Great Swamp is actually a neighboring land of Lordran.

The swamp that we see in-game is probably small in size by comparison.

Actually it is the great Swamp, Blight Town is a small part of the great swamp.  When looked at from above it is completely massive outside of and inside of the walls of Lordran.  Think of it like the undead burg, the Undead burg is nowhere near as large as Lordran but it is a smaller part of it.

    Hmm, confusing.

Any rationale for thinking it IS the Great Swamp? I mean, it's not like it says "Great Swamp" when you enter the area. Wouldn't the Great Swamp be in the lands of the living? Isn't the Blighttown swamp a little small to be called "Great"?

Just trying to figure this out.

As I said, Blight Town is a small part of the Great Swamp.  When looking at the area near Blight Town there is a massive swamp which blight town is just a part of.  A town within the Great Swamp, but not the entirety.

In regards to why I think it is the Great Swamp, it's a massive swamp in the area which is far larger and grander than any simple swamp should be.  Why would they list a place in game called the great swamp, show a massive swamp, and have the two not be related?  I also imagine what we can see is only a portion of the swamp and it is much larger still.

Sorry, I missed what you said about the Blighttown swamp being part of a larger swamp, but now I'm trying to think of what you mean. The area between Queelag's domain and the dog wheel has pretty much walls on all ends. Is there somewhere in the rafters of Blighttown that give you an impression that it goes on an on? Near any landmarks in particular.

See, I thought the Great Swamp was like Carim, Astora and all those other places not directly part of the game.

He means when you go to Firelink/ Firelink graveyard, look below and you'll see a huge green fog, and you figure out that Btown is right there too, because when you're in the swamp and look above you can see some of firelink's trees.

But I'm still not sure if that is in fact the Great Swamp Laurentius talk about

Indeed, at some angles you see not green fog but simply water of the same color as in blight town, and it goes essentially as far as you can see.  As well in certain areas of Btown you can see that the waters go on further while in the rafters, and that there are just artificial walls keeping you inside for game reasons.

It's possible, but if that is the case this world must have a lot of giant swamps.

I always assumed the Great Swamp was rather small but really awesome. Like the first explorers there came in. The first one said, "Man, what a great swamp." The other guy replies, "seriously? It's tiny" and the first guy adds, "Yeah, that's what's so great about it. It would suck if we had to cross a huge swap"

Tolvo might be onto something too though

Typically in regards to geography when places that are a form of terrain are named great, they are also considered very large.  That is the purpose of the word.  Sort of like Grand.

    Great Lakes, Grand Canyon, etc.

I always thought Blighttown's swamp was the very far end of the great swamp and the great swamp Laurentis speaks of is actually some distance away where there are other pyromancers and such.

I think this because Salaman was able to find Quelina But Eingy was banished for his poison/toxic pyromancy and the Body found in Btown with the Tattered Cloth set has poison mist, suggested that person was banished from the Great Swamp, and wandered to the far reaches where it meets up with blighttown

My opinion is that they're separate locations, and people native to the great swamp naturally felt at home in blighttown.

I have sincere doubts about The Great Swamp and BlightTown being the same location.

Firstly, it would be the only 'origin' region that is located within Lordran. Carim, Astora, etc. all have their representatives whom explicitly state that they traveled to Lordran and I believe the pyromancer (Laurentius) mentions something about not minding turning undead and coming to Lordran (citation?).

Secondly, Laurentius himself is rather chatty and never mentions any connection to the town immediately below him. Although there is a strong connection between pyromancers and Btown, I believe this is more related to the close proximity to the Bed of Chaos.

Thirdly, it is heavily implied that egg-back Engyi is the root cause for the current state of Btown. He is seen as a heretic, even by other pyromancers, and his experiments with poisons grew beyond his control which poisoned or corrupted the entirety of BlightTown. So, it can be assumed that BlightTown was once a habitable area like the 'Burg and Parish were, a place for the commoners of Lordran, but is now abandoned while The Great Swamp is spoken of in a current context - as in it is still around and not flooded with poison and monsters.

Lastly, the place is filled with poison and monsters - who would live there?
