    Pendant Theories

Post by BLA1NE on Tue Mar 06, 2012 7:39 pm

I know, right--not another pendant thread! But I used the search bar and it seems there is no straight-up pendant thread... I know there was in the old forums, guess it wasn't transferred.

I've just begun taking a bit of an interest in the pendant, and wanted to have a place to discuss all theories behind it. The Archives has a thread on the White Seance Ring that's veered a bit towards pendant discussion; "another theory" thread; a Reah thread, etc. Point is I don't see a pure "Pendant" thread.

    1. Like I said my interest in the matter is only just burgeoning so please excuse me if I'm re-treading old theories--I have some catching up to do! So the question I want to start with is: has it already been brought to the maidens in Duke's Prison? Reah's a maiden, she has a pendant; they were once maidens; the pendant is supposed to have something to do with memories, hence maybe they're related! Thoughts?

    2. I also like what's being proposed in another thread about the White Seance Ring. Not to steal your ideas guys, but it was a thread about the ring and I didn't want to hijack it with too much pendant talk, so I thought I'd move it here. Anyone have thoughts on the White Seance Ring + Way of White Covenant + Pendant, in the Parish Church?

Again, sorry if I'm re-treading old ground, but if this doesn't bring anything new to the table then at least it'll help me catch up so we can move forward together!

I have had heard of No. 2 being used in the old forums before, If i remember correctly.

I am sure that the two with the gwynevre miracles do remember what they are, because they didn't go insane, and turn into beasts as the others have. as the pendant is of fond memories, it would be more so that it would be used as a secret sign of connection, more so than a sign of which the pendant actually does something like most items.

Nice try, though. The pendant bothers all it seems. Except for me, of course. I need a clear head.

I was bringing up the maidens in the prison because they're crying... They could use some fond memories right about then!

The pendant didn't use to bother me before--I didn't care much about anything story-related! But I'm about burnt-out from PvE, PvP, and making builds, so lore is turning into my Dark Souls outlet right now.

I have not burned out at anything dark souls, other than some of the ethics that other follow, but that is another story.

I fell you, they need some love. Sadly, I do not follow the same sexual desires as the people across the sea, but I am sure you can fill them in.

I have read glyphblades secrets thread and so many people tested and posted so many different ideas, that I really dont know what else to so. Im playing a toon right now that has been the whole game in the WoW covenant, and I didnt notice anything different. I have tried using the White seance Ring in all the maiden statues and Gwyneveres statues in Anor Londo and hasnt happened a thing. I want to discover the secret but Im rundown of ideas.

I'm starting to think it doesn't do anything. The description is broken, I think if it was meant to do something, that's most likely broken also. I mean would it really be a shocking move by a developer like from to create an item like that just for the sole purpose of making players pull their hair out?

I feel like at this point odds are enough knowledgeable players have played through the game, doing everything there is to do, with a pendent in their inventory.

We can start with this. The interview of Miyazaki with game infomer.
    http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/11/12/afterwords-dark-souls.aspx

In interviews leading up to Dark Souls’ release, you suggested that players should go with the pendant starting gift. There’s still a lot of confusion and mystery in the community surrounding what this item affects. Now that the game has been out for a while, care to give any further clues?
Hm.... I am very happy to get this question because this is exactly what I expected. I am very sorry, I cannot tell you here how you use the item. I still want people to try investigating the meaning of the item. Please find it out on your own! [laughs]

Also our wiki has some theories:

What about the connection to the forest covenant? There is some pendant drops there..
And just because Rhea drops one after death does not meen it has to be connected to th WoW.
Perhaps there is connection somewhere, sometime in NG+?

And are the pendant related to the braziers in the firelinkaltar? If not, then there is to secrets out there that needs conifmation.
I wrote "needs" because im going crazy with this big grin all the searching but no fruit..

    Just droping some things here..

I think the forest invaders who chose the pendant as a gift can drop it.
Maybe Reah just chose it as her gift, if she arrived in Lordran in the same manner we did?
We can not be entirely sure it's Reah's pendant either. Petrus could have placed it on her corpse after killing her, since she drops none if we kill her.

Yeah I think the pendant on Rhea was Petrus'. In the text dumps he refers to himself as a "Wolf in Sheep's clothing", and given the wolf being emblematic to the Forest Covenant, coupled with the hunters dropping pendants I think the pendant's secret is tied in some way to the forest and Artorias. Even if Artorias was not the god of war, the similarities between the pendant and the sunlight medals lead me to believe the pendant is some form of currency used to honor Artorias.

There is some undercurrent conflict between the Forest Covenant and WoW. There is speculation that one can rank up in the WoW, but no one knows how.

My basic theories come down to this:

    1. The pendant is used to honor Artorias in some way undiscovered. Perhaps while wearing the wolf ring and the ring of abyss walking which is interestingly called a covenant ring.

    2. It is used as blood medals by the WoW to rank up in that covenant. WoW kill hunters, collect their pendants and use them to raise their standing.

Perhaps Miyazaki wants players to choose pendant to increase the drop rate of the pendants in pvp, increasing everyone's chances to discover the secret.

Hm, I have never thought to ask. Any forest hunters who notice a pendant drop, have you ever considered messaging the host and asking what their gift was?
I always assumed the drop was random, or was somehow related to inventory space.

^yea I created a whole thread about this in the Old forums:

    Covenant Disciples of Artorias

Goal: kill darkwraiths, by invading them with the covenant of artorias ring or by killing them in your own world

Killing them by invasion earns you a pedant

Use pedants to rank up at Artorias tomb

    Rank 1 - 10 pedants: random miracle

Rank 2 - 30 pedants: Armor of the abyss/Armor of Artorias

Rank 3 - 80 pedants: cinematic - What is the pedant for, whos the pygmy

It would actually be the converse. The Forest Hunter drops the pendant when killed, so if what Ublug says is right, only Forest Hunters who choose pendant to start would drop it when killed. As a forest hunter you would have to message the host if he kills you to find out it you dropped a pendant.

^It would be easier to do the other way, I think: farm forest hunters until one drops a pendant, then ask him if he had it.

I liked thinking the pendant was associated with WoW because we're still "missing" the "elite cleric armor". Maybe it does actually exist and is tied with some secret we haven't discovered yet...

Ah, I was confused because the forest hunters can also get pendants from invading and killing people in the forest. I have a forest hunter who gifted with the pendant, I will make a point of asking from now on. Since I die so frequently, haha.

Is the community dismissive of the item "rubbish" as well? (not trying to derail topic, but this is another common drop in the forest covenant) It's description has always made me a little curious, but I doubt its really more that a little in-game gag. I am just suspicious of all the items that tell me they are "worthless".

Right, but I have also heard that Forest Hunters do receive them for killing hosts as well so there is something to what Yukon said. Strangejoy would be someone to consult on this.

So the Pendant 'contains memories' and in Miyazaki's (I believe) first interview, the one where he recommended it as the starting gift, he said something to the effect that 'you may need to do a couple playthroughs to discover the purpose.' My theory is that it contains memories from your previous NGs that somehow effect your NG+s. I don't have any theories yet, so far the Braziers seem promising, but I don't think it has to do with your starting class or covenant. Maybe which boss you kill first, or in which order you offer the souls to the Lordvessel.

You are right. The only things that change in NG+ are that you can meet kaathe, you can offer Gwyns Soul to the Sunlight Altar, you can forge his greatsword and other bosses weapons, you can buy Gwyns Robes and Crown, you can let Gwyndolin live or kill him, you can let Gwynevere live or kill her, you can let Priscilla live or kill her. I think NG+ is the solution to uncovering the pendants secret.

Only difference between NG and NG+s is the gear that transfers over--boss souls, items, equipment--and what you can possibly do with that to alter the playthrough. If there's any truth to this NG+ thing, then it has to concern an item that transfers over, and its interaction with something before you can obtain that item in the first playthrough.

And about the Braziers: aren't they all lit during the ending cinematic when you choose not to rekindle the flame? Don't know if there's anything you can do with them during the playthrough if their purpose is just to be lit during the cinematic...

Hmm, I guess my theory is that the pendant stores the memories of your previous playthroughs, i.e. it's something that 'changes' for NG+ I don't know what it would interact with though....maybe NPCs that you've killed or done their quests? ...maybe something once you've done both endings with the pendant in your inventory? I'll try trading to snuggly on NG+ and see if she noticed.

Hmm, hopefully I'll coroborate that soon when I beat my first playthrough.

I remember picking up the pendant from Reah's loot on a playthrough once, but I'm pretty sure it didn't transfer over to my next playthrough. If anyone can confirm that it doesn't transfer, then that's something else we need to consider.

Either the pendant you choose as gift is different, or whatever you do with the pendant must be done after you can get the one from Reah's loot, and before finishing the playthrough.

Also, @AeroSigma: once you kill Gwyn, be sure to walk out the front door if you want to get the braziers ("Dark Lord") ending.

If you buy the master key from Domhnall, it is the only key that carries over to NG+. That way you can open the shortcut from New Londo to Valley of Drakes, beat Sif and get the ring, kill Ingward, beat the Four Kings and meet with Kaathe before ringing any of the bells. I have tried this and he says that when I have the Lordvessel, he will tell me the truth. Nothing else changes.

    new purpose?

Post by cdr2783 on Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:27 pm

So Im on NG+ and had to run through asylum today. I'm aware of pendant theroies and mess around with it every now and then. Picked up peculiar doll and remembered what they said about starting gift so figured it may be useful there. dropped pendant where doll was and fought stray demon. died once. beat him next round. I went back to pick up pendant because I figured nothing happened and found it had turned to a prism stone.

I have no more pendants to mess around with so i cant do much more with it.

Prism stone descriptions says something about a rare 8th color. I chucked it and it was a orangish-yellow.

    @Wyrm

You can start as a Thief and have both the Pendant and Masterkey, so you can do all that in NG and still have the pendant with you while you do it. Doesn't have to be NG+.

    Not according to youtube:

There are lit braziers, but the ones we've been talking about are clearly not. Check the 0:49 mark.
Now if someone has footage of that ending with the braziers lit...
