Yes, you can kill him to receive the ring. Then go to the Belltower where you fought the Gagroyles and talk to Oswald. Ask him to "Absolve Sins" (will cost 500*your current level. Ex: If you're level 40, it will cost 20000 souls). Then you can go back to Alvina and rejoin.
If you don't absolve your sin's first, Alvina will disappear and you won't be able to rejoin for the rest of the playthrough.
