As a Pyromancer, is it Bad To Change Armor? Empty As a Pyromancer, is it Bad To Change Armor?

    Post by Ryudo88 Wed Jul 03, 2013 9:07 pm

    Hey guys!

I'm going through my first playthrough of the game right now and loving it. I recently beat Ornstein and Smough (what an accomplishment!) and right now I'm stuck on the Four Kings and I seriously feel like my character is completely useless against these guys, so I'm trying to beef my character up by grinding and upgrading. I heard having a +15 level weapon is recommended against the Four Kings so I'm currently trying to upgrade my Claymore (right now it is +8).

My question is this: should I have changed my armor as a Pyromancer or should I have stuck with the original armor for the Pyromancer and continued to level it up? Is there an armor I SHOULD be wearing at this point? I believe I'm SL 42 right now.

    Thanks for any advice!

The beautiful thing about Dark Souls is that every armour has its uses in certain situations. In this case, the starting Pyromancer gear has insanely high Fire defense and Poison resistance, so it's best suited for situations where those are present (such as Blighttown, to give an example). The Four Kings use magic attacks as well as physical attacks, so it's best to wear armour that is more suited for that situation. If you have it, the Antiquated Set is great for this. Just don't wear the Dusk Crown with it. You could also try something like the Gold-Hemmed Black, or do it like most people and wear Giant's Armour or Havel's Armour and try to tank your way through the fight. It's purely your choice. The Pyromancer armour has decent magic defense, but you can get better magic defense off of some different armours. Just try experimenting until you find a setup you like that has good magic defense.

There is no set armor for any reason. The class you start with becomes useless as you level it to what you want, weapons and armor. Though I have to say to take O&S with the starting armor is nice. Really pick any armor you want or mix match pieces how you want.

Gotcha. Struggling with Four Kings so much just had me second guessing my character. I honestly wasn't expecting them to be THIS hard.

Boy, that's Dark Souls in a nutshell right there.

There's something satisfying about sticking to a certain armor set, but if it's driving you crazy, switching is totally fine. Recommended, I guess, actually. You'll go crazy enough in Lordran without adding to the stress.

What makes them hard is them outnumbering you. Get some good phantoms and play it smart and they die easy.

Problem is, I cannot summon the NPC since I didn't use her against Moonlit Butterfly. Every time I've tried to summon other players (PS3 version) I can never find any summon signs. When fighting O&S they were everywhere but I cannot find a single one for Four Kings.

Be careful about summoning help.  Most phantoms will just blast the level for you.  To me, it's similar to just enternig the cheat code "pass level".  Not really satisfying.

Don't summon a mage.  Dark Bead is really OP.  Find a good melee person at the least.

Its debatable if the Witch NPC is really that useful in that fight...

Are you looking for signs at the start of the zone where all the non aggressive hollows are? That seems to be pretty busy at lev 80, 100, and even now and then at lev 50.
    !! But !!
Mark IV is right, if you call in a super mage or someone rocking a shotell. There may not be much of a fight...

May be a good idea to put your own sign down and try to get a few rounds in against the kings as a phantom.

The Painted Guardian armor set has the highest magic defense versus weight in the game. It's useful against most of the DLC bosses, too. Well worth getting and upgrading to +5.

Since you're a pyromancer, use power within and chaos fireballs and normal fireballs. You can win the fight solo. PinFeku did a video on a SL1 run; worth watching to learn how to dodge the Four Kings attacks.

First; congrats on getting to the Four Kings at SL 42 in your first playthrough.  That's impressive, however it's probably why you're not seeing any signs.  If you want help you should probably level up to at least 50 as Mosquito hinted at.  Definitely upgrade your claymore and I would say switch armor too.  Dibs is right that considering all factors (weight, defense, resistance, poise and even looks) you can use just about anything... probably not the full set, though.  The problem with the starting sets though, is that they are upgraded with regular titanite.  Most of the other sets use twinkling titanite (some are non-upgradable) , which you can buy and it only goes to +5.  If you want to get an armor set past +10 you have to farm a bunch of titanite chunks and if you want to go to +15 you'd have to use a precious slab.

I don't believe it's worth upgrading or even changing your armor unless you need to meet weight. The best way to fight the Kings is to have fast roll and dodge their attacks, you'll still need the Crest Shield to block their magic and decent Vitality to withstand hits you're bound to take.

Thanks for the tips guys. Maybe I'll work on leveling a bit more too so I can find more players throwing down summon signs.

Got to try this since I always tank them with full havel's.

I recently completed a sl1 challenge run (pyromancer), and for the majority of the playthrough I kept my starting pyromancer robes (although I did use the wolf ring for some much needed poise). They are more than adequate to get you through the game.

The Four Kings gave me many problems and I tried a lot of different tactics against them, in the end I went for Havel's armour, Iron Flesh and great combustion in addition to my weapon (fire battleaxe) and crest shield. I cast Iron Flesh after getting up close since it's absolutely essential to close the distance quickly since the closer you are to each King, the less damage his melee attacks will do. Once up close, the combination of the armour and Iron Flesh meant that I could tank all the hits and heal easily. Overall it was an effective strategy.

Good luck with your own playthrough!
