Souls references in borderlands 2 Empty Souls references in borderlands 2

    Post by samster628 Sat Jun 29, 2013 2:20 pm

Has anyone played the assault on dragon keep DLC on borderlands 2? Just thought that i would put it out there that there are a ludicrous amount of dark souls references. Just to give some examples.
When you die the respawn station may say "hollowing reversed"
There is a quest in which you have to light bonfires and kill enemies and collect their souls. Then an NPC called "crestallen player" changes from skeleton to human. And then there is an invasion message as a miniboss appears.

There are ludicrous amounts of many different pop culture references in Borderlands 2, not just Dark Souls that are only there to serve as an advertising platform. When you type in your search engine a favourite subject of yours, Borderlands 2 is mentioned by journalists containing said thing as an Easter egg.

Borderlands 2 is set up this way to sucker you into their game, not because they have a clear understanding or respect for the stuff they are referencing, but because they want you to buy their game.  I think it's disgusting that a game company would sink to that level where it needs the support or other games success.

Sorry for the rant on BL2, but I have no respect for a game that was designed from the get go a generic piece of trash.

Wow, steve... those are strange conclusions. It seems likely that the guys developing borderlands 2 actually like the stuff they are referencing rather than simply pandering to other games' fanbases. Have you played BL2?

I get where you're coming from steveswede but completely dsagree. Theres lots of references to many games and general pop culture in Borderlands games. The "Gwyns Head" one for instance, where you find a pistol named Gwyns some-thing-or-another in a random box with a skull inside, then Handsome Jack comes in over the Echo network and screams "Whats in the box?!" as a reference to the movie Seven, where the hero screams the same thing before finding his girlfriends (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) head in a box, then shooting the bad guy...

Anyway on to the Dark Souls easter eggs... there is also a bonfire just like Dark Souls with a guy named very close to Solaire standing beside it. Theres a challenge specifically for finding this so I don't think its fair to just write off all the references within the game by saying "they're just there to pull players from other games and get them to buy ours."

BTW if you haven't found the bonfire its a wee walk off the beaten track in that area you fight the big blue Crystalid for Marcus's safe.

Fallout 2 was supposed to contain an actual Easter Egg, that when you found it, it would hatch. At least I don't think it made it in, time limits, but that game is pretty big.

I'd have to disagree as well, the way some of these easter eggs are done in Borderlands imo reflects that they devs actually had/have a keen interest in the games/movies/etc that they're referencing.

The First easter egg was a Bonfire with a guy named "Solitaire" next to it, much like how when the game was new this is what a lot of people (mistakenly) called Solaire (because they're idiots, similar to people calling Karkand "Karkland" in BF3).

The Boss that invades in the new easter egg is called "N00bkilla" or something to that extent as well, and from what I've seen the whole quest seems more in line with a fans homage than whoring out references for more buys.

Sure there is that aspect to it as well, but the way they've done it (imo) shows that they actually are fans of the things that they reference.

Sooo just looked up the easter egg and gotta say i think i dont think them trying to get support they seemed to have an understanding of the game. enough of one to make a chuckleworthy scenario for people who have played it. I honestly feel bad for the people who find this without having played or heard of dark souls

That Dark Souls Quest had done things right, but...I was disappointed. He did "Well! What is it!", but he wasn't flipping or wearing a mask! That was just sad...

Key word was ludicrous ya know. There are a great many references to all kinds of things in BL2 but i feel there is an incredible amount of dark souls in this DLC. I also do believe that someone on their production team is a serious souls player. My favorite easter egg is a certain item called mysterious amulet. It is sold during a quest by someone with a far eastern accent called "mr miz" and apparently has no use. The said person also has a small rant about how if he had to choose an item it would be that amulet! I think we all know who this is a reference to.
Also i know about the original easter egg in the caverns but i didn't count it cos i thought most people already knew.

Perhaps, one or more of the devs is a hardcore souls player. Perhaps even one of the lead designers is an extremely hard core souls player. Perhaps he even posts on this very message board.

    Well What is it

The first "boss" in Tiny tina expansion, where Tiny Tina summons some black dragon right in the beggining of the game. (that the player can't kill, it's a expansion about DnD) Where Lilith asked Tina weather or not it's a good idea to start a DnD campaign with a boss no body can possibly kill. In which tina then agrees and changed the boss instantly into a skeleton midget. (probably diablo reference?)

Can't wait to get the expansion...

I'll be the guy to second this, but then again I think BL2 is an extremely terribly designed game so I probably have some bias.

You know, after looking at some of the video. Reading their fourms, and think about all the time i spend playing borderlands/boderlands 2

Your right, the appeal of this game for me really is just the power grab.

Probably why i am now trying to pvp again in dark souls...
