Video Game Trivia Empty Video Game Trivia

Post by PlasticandRage Mon May 13, 2013 1:08 pm

I was just thinking that I don't think we've ever done a thread like that. I think it'd be fun, but there'd have to be an honor code that people don't just google the answers because it'd ruin the game. I was thinking I ask a question, then the poster with the right answer asks the next one and so on and so forth. All that sound good?

Okay here are the rules for now:

-First poster asks a question, and there is a minimum of 10 guesses before the poster can decide to reveal the answer.
-2 guesses max per poster per question.
-Hints are allowed at the poster's discretion.
-Poster with the correct answer asks the next question, or the closest answer, as decided by the poster.

Okay then. I'll start: what 3 video game series does the character Karnov appear in?

Maybe we should have some kind of rule for new questions if there's one that nobody gets for awhile? Like if a day or an entire page passes without the answer? I'm not sure how best to do that.

I think it'd be a good rule to keep it alive. I'm opened to suggestion there. There must be something like that that's commonly done on forums.

I'll accept two of the series as the answer. Somebody that's older like me is going to get it right away. If you played arcade games in the 80s you'd most likely know the answer.

Way to put pressure on me.....I'm thinking but I'm pretty bad at names so....

    Final Fight and
    Contra

would be my guesses based on your hints

For your rule suggestion I would say a day before giving up the answer could be too long and might make the thread die. On the flip side, a number of incorrect guesses (legitimate guesses) would make the most sense. Only one guess per person to prevent spamming to get to the limit. How about somewhere between 5 and 10 "legitimate" guesses before the poster is allowed to reveal the correct answer? That way, it can have slow times and not get too slow and still allow for rapid fire gameplaying if people are invested in the thread. Also, I used "allowed to reveal" for a reason. If this thread was hotbed of activity and lots of people wanted to guess, it would allow the poster to drag it out more if everyone wanted a turn.

    Personally, I would say 5

When I was a kid people used to have birthday parties where their parents would give the arcade like $100 in quarters and the kids would just play on them for hours. When you ran out you'd raise your hand and they'd come around and give you a few more. I remember standing watching the Continue? timer count down and like frantically raising my hand so they'd come before the 9 second count ran down. There were arcades everywhere then though. There were 2 in my hometown, and I lived in a pretty small town. You can't even find em in malls anymore.

^ I think that sounds reasonable. I'm thinking 2 guesses per poster though, so people could take a stab and then if a hint is given they can take another. The 10 guess minimum until a new question sounds good to me too, that way 5 people, or 10 different people, or a mix would have a shot. Also I'm going to say hints can be given at the asker's discretion. I'll add that to the first post.

And it's not Contra or Final Fight, but one of those is close.

I remember birthday parties at arcades too, wicked stuff. Too bad they really don't exist anymore sad

Edit: I should clarify that they don't quite exist in the Netherlands, don't know about other countries.

You guys are really close. It's that era for sure, and the right genre for one of them.

I think we should have a max guess limit or a max time limit before the next question starts. That way if the poster who asked the question disappears, or just drags it on with nobody guessing the rules will dictate a new question. I was thinking maybe 20/25 for the max? And maybe a day for the time limit if the poster disappears? There has to at least be enough time to get through that time in the wee hours of the morning when most of us take off and there's a skeleton crew here.

I'll give another hint. One of them is an older NES game, an extremely difficult but innovative NES game, one is an 80s arcade game that was later made into an NES game, and the other is a 90s arcade game. The 90s game is the more obscure one. He was the first level boss in one, a playable character in another, and the end boss of the other.

If nobody gets it after another couple guesses I'll post gameplay pictures.
