    The new E3 footage finally showed the backstab mechanism, and it was definitely different.
    In the demo it showed the hero get behind the enemy and instead of the traditional backstab he slashed the enemy 2 or 3 times in the back.
    The animation seemed to be slightly faster, at least the first part where the enemy kinda slides into place for the backstab. Don't know, but I'm assuming that there will be more than one type of animations for the backstabs.
    This is what I took from it, what do you guys think?
    Did I miss something?
    Or get something wrong?

    I never thought they wouldn't be back so it's certainly no surprise to me. Although we already have more than one animation for backstabs.

    I guess I meant more than one per weapon.
    But yeah Im not surprised either, it's just been a huge topic ever since DkS2 was announced.

    Maybe a little,but I cant really say based off what I saw. It was just one backstab.
    But it did look like a combo instead of a single crushing blow that IMO is what a backstab should be all about.

    The slashing looks awkward but it may be a part of the suggested mechanic of backstabs being an escapable action to a point.

    that's what I thought, since he slashed the hollow three time iirc. it would be cool if you can get out of it after the first hit, maybe some button combo that you need perfect timing to pull it off? meh.

    'Backstabbing will make a return in Dark Souls 2, but in a slightly different form. In the case of the Warrior character, executing a backstab with his short sword performed a three-hit animation: a hilt bash followed by two slashes to the back. Rather than stabbing through the torso of an enemy, backstabs will results in attacks with weapon-specific flourishes.
    According to a Namco rep, players may accidentally "whiff" a backstab if they're within range, but not at a distance close enough to execute. A short sword backstab attempt may miss on the first part of the three-part attack, we were told, leaving the backstabber open to an attack — something we weren't able to witness firsthand during a hands-on demo.
    But the changes to backstabs appear to be a move from the developer to reduce players' reliance on backstabs, which are easy to execute, carry little risk and yield high damage in the first Dark Souls.'

    no probs! I think this could be totally amazing, although it could make fighting gankers more of a nightmare, but I think overall it could result in better gameplay all round.

    I'm hoping that this means that you can either "get out" of a backstab, or that the range is smaller because you risk getting a miss-stab and leaving yourself open

    In one of the articles, it was mentioned that devs didn't want to incude the traditional backstabs, because they are a easy source of high damage, which also make the player invulnerable for the duration of the animation.

    We only saw a crititcal from a one handed sword, which is a three part attack. The first part is a very short ranged bash, which should be avoidable somehow. Also, there should no longer be invincibility when doing backstabs, so they can be interrupted. It was commented that it was made like this, so player can't use the backstab to deal with a group of enemies by exploiting the gihh damage + invincibility, which makes perfect sense.

    I wouldn't worry about the animation itself. It looked rather sloppy and the two cuts to the side of opponents neck are really not something you can do to every enemy and with every weapon. Doing with a Shotel is outright beheading and with a rapier it would do 0 damage as it has no edges. Using it on higher enemies, like Black Knights, would look like you're giving them a back massage. big grin

    I really wonder how they plan to put this mechanic into PvP, but if they do, fighting gankers is gonna be that much tougher.

    Its not supposed to make killing gankers easy. I mean, logically, if you're in a 2v1 situation, and the 2 opponents are equally as skilled as you, you shouldn't win, right? Thats how the world works.

    That's the problem with gankers. They have no skill. That's why they have to gank to actually get some wins.
    Even without backstabs, it's still possible to use enviroment to your advantage and by that I mean more than hiding behind mobs.
