I'm not sure how to make the most of, is trading hits the best way to trigger counters or are there other relatively easy ways to do it?

Re: Leo Ring build.
not sure what ur going for for the mid roll, seems like two shields is a bit much, wastes your bow slot, which bows and arrow ARE affected by Leo Ring btw
I would lose the weapons you chose if I were going for a pure Leo build and probably choose the Balder Side Sword for its amazing r2s, same with vanilla greatsword, or maybe a claymore or longsword if you can play with stats a bit
Lucerne deals exclusively thrust damage as well

Re: Leo Ring build.
While I prefer fast rolling I'm pretty comfortable with medium roll so it doesn't bother me, You are right on the two shields being a tad excessive; but I really hate magic spammers so I always bring the Crest shield for the inevitable times I encounter them. The Balder is looks and high stability; but I guess I dropping it is a good idea.
I don't really like using bows in PvP since I'm terrible at using them (except greatbows for when I invade in Anor Londo, they are awesome there even if you don't have the correct stats since eve if they deal no damage the arrows keep their awesome knockback), I prefer my trusty poison knives for range when I'm not running spells.
Call me sacrilegious; but I don't get all the love the Balder Side Sword gets, it is a nice weapon, looks really cool; but I can't see how it is so awesome.
As for the claymore longsword and greatsword their thrusting attacks are too slow for me to use reliably and with a Leo ring focus I would prefer for all my hits to have a chance of benefiting from the ring.
I haven't used the Lucerne myself; but I heard it is a bad weapon with slow and awkward moves so I didn't consider it .

Re: Leo Ring build.
With those quality stats the Halberd would be a true monster. It's R2s wont get the leo bonus but the 2hr1s are absolutely insane with Leo.
And yes trading is the most reliable way of getting the leo bonus to activate. Against slower weapons if you attack preemptively you can sometimes roll out of the way and not get hit.
If you don't understand the love for the BSS, try using it and 2hr2 r2 with Leo on. It's a pretty convincing experience.
I'd also say if you're not that great with bows in PvP there's never a better time to practice than with a build that can use them well, the composite with large arrows will hurt something fierce with 27/40 stats and leo. It's not always super fun learning new things at first but being able to bow in PvP will add a lot of danger to your arsenal.
Another very strong option with the Leo is the Avelyn, I've seen shots where all 3 bolts got the counter bonus and it was surprising how fast it killed people (900ish damage per firing)
I wont bother to tell you that you can fit into better armor as anyone who chooses Ornstien's is doing so for looks.

Re: Leo Ring build.
Is Ornstein armour really that bad? But yes I choose it mainly for how it looks, I really like it (and the fact that I still meet the 76 poise breakpoint when using it doesn't hurt).

I'd do something like this, keeping in mind the Ornstien armor for looks.

Re: Leo Ring build.
Why the rapier in the offhand? It looks pretty awesome and I would only have to take care of not trading hits with the Ultra-weapon guys.
Edit: I was thinking on something like this

Re: Leo Ring build.
Why 27 str tho? Wouldn't it make more sense to go 28 for the Greatsword??
Ever been hit with a greatsword R2 or rolling R1 when someone has a leo on? Ouch doesn't begin to discribe it around 1100 dmg;)
Also with a 28/40 I would def agree with using a Halbert since its my fav weapon

Re: Leo Ring build.
Dropping FaP is a big hit to survivability since your Hp drops rather low, but it's certainly doable, you'll just have to be more weary of trading hits.
The offhand rapier can parry and has a fast out stretched poke. It's just generally useful.

Re: Leo Ring build.
Forgive me All-father Loyd, for doubting of the awesomeness of the Balder Swag Sword.
I gave this build* a spin on the forest (hosting as a Forest Hunter, so I only got Darkwraiths and one lonely Darkmoon) and in an hour and a half session, I only died about three times, which is big for me, hell I managed to kill the host in a gank squad!
I'm still having some trouble with Magic users; but otherwise I had a a blast, I used the halberd against heavy armoured phantoms and the BSS against people in light armour.
*I used the Elite Knight Amour when playing; but had this already made with the Paladin's chest in mugen.

Re: Leo Ring build.
You can always use crest shield or a magic upgraded red/white round shield or even the crystal ring shield for insane magic blocking.
Glad to hear the Halberd and BSS are working out for you (they really do shine with leo)

Re: Leo Ring build.
Here, this is just an example of how to improve it. Silver Knight spear can be swapped with Halberd. You really want fast roll for this, those weapons don't go well with mid roll. http://mmdks.com/2ows

Because yuck thats why
I wont be trading blows if I can help it, and flipping with 53 poise is quite enough especially with how much more damage protection I have

For me, it's 0, 40, 56-58, or 77+.

Definitely wont be getting hit with greatsword running attacks, but If I really feel the need to switch, theres always the Maiden or Painting Guardian Robe so I can wear a poise-y-er helm

Re: Leo Ring build.
Haven't been hit by a GS running attack in awhile...
In fact, I haven't fought a GS in awhile. They seem to have disappeared.
Either that or I just didn't notice because I wasn't paying attention during the fight. Hard to come by a good GS user these days.

What else do you need 56 poise for to tank?

I just like the solid 56 or 58.
I'm OCD.
Also, running CGS R1 breaks 56 poise maybe?
Not like anyone uses it...

Crystal Greatsword has special poise breaks? Im slightly confused
62+ is preferable for me as well tho, as good Falchion users still kick my ***

But if CGS had special poise breaks, I'd totally use it.
