The bonus given to weapons for backstabs and ripostes are lethal with the right stats, weapon and the hornet ring added to it. Really if I had it on my main build I could one parry/riposte people with my chaos blade.

I consider it a fair tradeoff nowadays, a build that has it usually makes itself pretty fragile compared to a Fap/Wolf or Fap/Havel's. Even with Hornet+Wolf stamina and HP are sacrificed compared to other melee classes, and even then most fishing is easy to counter and puts the fisher at a disadvantage against a skillful player.

Well it's not as good as it used to be, but it's still pretty strong. I use it on my greatbow build since most of the damage on that build comes from BS'ing.

I spent a while using it on my lvl 56 DW along with ring of fog and a chaos knife +5. Used to invade the painted world with it and sneak around and attempt to assassinate my hosts, it was great fun!

I like the Hornet Ring a lot for the extra damage it brings, and those lovely animations. However, the Dark Wood Grain Ring makes getting backstabs easier, in addition to opening a whole slew of other options. I remember what Valk said about the situation rather fondly: "Why get one big backstab when you can get two normal ones?" I used to totally agree with this sentiment, but I've come to a different understanding these days. I feel that the DWGR is better for Dexterity weapons in general, while the Hornet Ring befits the other ones better.

The DWGR makes being reactive better, and the best weapons for quickly responding to what the opponent does are such things as the Estoc, Chaos Blade, or Silver Knight Spear. Comparatively, the Claymore, Great Club, or Murakumo are better pacesetters for the fight per se, and they work well when their opponent screws up. I'd rather have Hornet over DWGR for these weapons so when they hit, they hit as hard as possible. It's a bit hard to get the free ring slot with a comfortable amount of poise for the general match up, so it's rather often I'm stuck with RoFaP+Havel and healthy defence, or with the desired rings and for want of something more than a loincloth a different ring anyways.

It's much easier to be reactive in Dark Souls than take the offence, and I can find myself swapping to DWGR with a fair bit of frequency even when I have a build that I feel is 'appropriate' for Hornet when I feel the situation requires it. However, the crumple up that comes from killing with the riposte or backstab never stops bringing a smile to my face.

    Well said, Roan.

    To the Op:
I love the hornet ring. Why? Because most of the time I prefer to kill you quickly, instead of toying with you.

It's just slightly silly when someone gets up from getting pinned down to the ground, or walks after getting their spine thoroughly stabbed.
The brutality of the animation implies a ohko.

Hornet ring is a great ring that does extra crit that's why people use it.

Don't act like some tactic was discovered to make the hornet ring useless. That is unless you have some valuable info you would like to share.

Unless it is over 1600 you can still be one-hit. Never seen a riposte higher then that.

    Nope, I have about 1708 hp (45 vit+FaP)
The only counter to hornet ring is to have high hp

There are a lot of counters. Dead angle, don't leave yourself open, unlock from target. So many ways to counter them I hardly get killed by them anymore, except when I am ganked.

I never found DWGR that useful for landing BS's, except against stuff like combustion, where the extra i-frames help out. The actual difference in total frames of animation between fast roll and flip is 24 vs. 22 IIRC. I mostly like DWGR because it makes it a lot easier to avoid damage, and punishing a flip is a lot harder than punishing a fast-roll.
