Gamestop knows about dark souls 2

So I bought street fighter 4 today. Asked the game stop guy if i could preorder dark souls 2. He says ok. and we make small talk.

Ask him if he knows about dark souls 2. His reply?

"Yea they're releas- I mean well no. I don't know anything but you should check out online. they have a 12 minute trailer...blablabla".



It might just be me but I thought that was suspicious as crap. I think game stop knows when it's coming out.

Do GameStop employees (by that I mean the rank-and-file, not the higher-ups) even get advance notice of game releases?

DUN DUN DUNNNN... No I think one of the gamestop employees would have secretly released the info by now, He may have just made a mistake, or messed up his words.

He was probably messing with you.

I would love to think that Gamestop employees are given information about game releases, but chances are, it was just a slip of the tongue, or even him playing a little prank to make his day a bit more interesting. If you're not convinced, try asking different employees, and see what they say.

P.S. Gamestop is the same as EB Games, right?

Though to be honest game shops will probably get earlier notification of release dates so the publishes can negotiate the whole front of shop advertising thing that happens with big releases.

when dark souls came out, the guy at game said "it's like skyrim i never played it, think its a brand new series" i was like um demons souls!? the guy said is that like COD SERIOUSLY!!!

When I worked at Toys R Us the rank and file such as I could, on rare occasions, be privy to this kind of info. If your store director and manager allowed certain functions for the store computer and guns (like I had) you could dig into shipping info dates sometimes. For instance we knew when the 360 was shipping to us pretty early. I don't recall if it was before the release date was known but I can say this; we knew they were in the back before we could sell them. And we generally knew when the next shipment was coming. We just weren't allowed to admit it. A lot of titles, particularly the big ones, would trickle in in advance of the release date to ensure stock was adequate.

So it's possible they have a shipping date but in my experience that would mean they're shipping within the next month or they're expecting to receive ridiculous quantities.

Think I'll interrogate my local Gamestop today...

Wretched, Gamestop is the same type of store as EB games.
The guy probably knows the release date because it costs money for promotions and E3 preparation and stuff. What most companies do is sell so many items ahead of release date so they can draw up contracts for the sales, some get half payment up front to help with the promotions and promotional items. The guy at Game Stop more than likely knows because they would have to pre-order x amount of games for production so FROM or who ever doesn't produce too many and lose any money for having an over-abundance of games before the sales start.

OOOH! All this talk of release dates and Gamestop conspiracies is getting me excited.

Seems like we've gotta bring out the Worst type for this one.

All game and video stores have a list of upcoming releases. Online, gamespot.com has a list of upcoming releases, currently through October of this year. No DkS2 yet.

As a former employee of Gamestop I can confirm that we do not get advanced information on when games release, if we did, we'd tell you.

We DO get advanced data on Collectors editions though....

An employee would never know. Head office would know and also not tell anyone. They are not allowed to let their stores know until the advertisement starts.
My buddy at EB has a relative in his head office. He asked and was told he couldn't divulge anything.
