    Anti-Malware Software Empty Anti-Malware Software

Post by Hart Sat Jun 01, 2013 3:42 am

What program(s) do you guys use to protect your computers from malware?

I'm currently running AVG 2013 but I've just had a **** of a time cleaning out some bastard adware and rootkits that AVG was apparently no match for, so I'm now looking for a replacement.
    Any suggestions?

Start going to safe porn sites, the ones you could let your mother see without the fear of viruses ending up on her computer.

I'd like to help, but sadly I'm retarded with technology. Just having AVG on my computer makes me paranoid sometimes.

Have AVG and do a regular scan With Malwarebytes.

There is some kind of difference between malware and viruses, just do not know what.

Anyways that is what I use.

OK thanks peeps, I'll try that Malwarebytes (and find some safer porn sites Anti-Malware Software 4136335658). Is there a difference between malware and adware? On almost every page I go to certain random words are highlighted and underlined, scrolling over them brings up an ad for like, cheap holidays and flights and sh*t. Also every now and then clicking on a link, for instance if I go up and click on the link to the Off-Topic page, a new window will open to an ad-site.
Do you know if a malware scan will get rid of this? Or is it something else?

AD ware is a program meant to show ads. A program to scan for them is Ad-Aware.

Malware is short for Malicious Ware and is there to directly harm your computer.

Those highlighted links are part of the site, and can be found on "safe" sites too. I do not recommend clicking on those ad links. The thing that make me suspect you have ad ware is that pop-up sites open when you open a new window, like Randon Off-Topic.

If you want to get rid of ads overall I would suggest usage of the add on "Adblock" and "Ghostery" (Not ad-ware, rather ads on youtube and on the bottom of normal pages)

    http://www.lavasoft.com/

    http://www.ghostery.com/download

Also, if you are tech savvy you can see if there is any processes on your computer that should not be there.

I'd also add CCleaner to that list. Really useful little program and free too.

EDIT: And cutting down on weird porn websites, or just porn in general will probably help your poor desktop too.

Most computer have optimizing programs pre-installed. At least cleaning part of it. And luckily my computer is able to optimize with pre installed programs from the maker.

But I will check CCcleaner out.

Edit: After trying CCcleaner, I reached the conclusion that it is far better then any pre-installed.

I pretty use the ones Tehdoom mentioned. Also, stay away from Internet Explorer as well (IMO).

EDIT: and call me crazy but . . . I completely format my hard drive every 6 months or so.

I run Avast and it works for me, as for malware, you can use MalwareBytes to scan it(the paid version has anti malware as well).

Just bumbing this topic so I'm not filling up off-topic with more threads.

Are there any things I should install etc. before connecting an external HDD to my laptop for the purpose of backing up my files.
I'm just thinking, I would like to reformat my computers HDD to remove any infections (a la Reim) but I would also like to make sure any malware I dont know about doesnt infect my external and get back onto my laptop when I restore everything... So any suggestions would be welcome big grin

If that's your plan I would just run as much as you can before you do it. I've got a whole big list of things I run if I'm concerned. The big ones are Spybot and Adaware, then I run AVG and finish with Microsoft Security Essentials. That gives me piece of mind.

And I don't know if this goes without saying or not, but don't run them at the same time. They can interfere with each other if you do that.
