I'd just like to add that you can adjust the aim of the Greatsword's R2 until the very end, while with the Zwei you're stuck the moment you hit the R2 button.

Also I managed to hit Brave for 1159 damage with the Greatsword 2H-R2 at 30 str/10 dex + Leo Ring. Good luck doing that with the Zwei.

I have to go with Greatsword due to the hipster in me who refuses to use such a mainstream weapon like the Zweihander.

The awesomeness of the Zweihander is pretty awesome though...

Supposedly the Greatsword is the same length as the Zwei. But the Zwei looks and feels longer to me, I have an easier time with it in my hands and it feels easier to pull off dead angles with.

Zwei also looks better in general.
    It's cleaner and such.
Greatsword just looks like a slab slapped on to a hilt.
    Ugly IMO.

I like big slabs of metal slapped on hilts, so I think the greatsword looks better.

And I was confused by all the talk of the Zwei having the better R2s... The fact that you can change where you're facing while you wind up make it so much easier to hit someone with IMO. And it works with the Leo ring for absurd damage. All the Zwei's has is the knock-down, which is useful as it leads to mind games, but you can't reliably hit anyone not snoozing with it, it's huge and telegraphed.

I think the Greatsword is the better weapon, but it does have that extra weight, and the difference (the R2s) isn't really all that big compared to how often you'll be using r1 and rolling attacks. So unless I'm already using the Leo for something, and have the stats to use either I'd pick Greatsword. But I rarely have the Leo and just happen to have 28str and some dex change..... so I think I end up using the Zwei more because 24str

For some reason, I find it hell-of-a-lot easier to fight a Zwei user then a Greatsword user. But thats mostly because I rarely ever see a Greatsword, so I always forget that damn poking.

I consider the R2's a moot point because they're both easily telegraphed and roll bsed unless the opponent is midrolling with super poise which makes the GS a more viable option for safe hits. My Zwei has a perfectly usable poke though, I don't need a slower and more stamina costly one on the GS.

That's because the Zwei is so common that there is simply a higher percentage of poor users. A good Zwei user is scary and I can't feel the same about the GS.

Greatsword, but only because it reminds me of Guts' sword from when he was still part of the Band of the Hawk - a group of mercenaries serving the Kingdom of Midland - (Berserk, which is a great read by the way) as its Raider Captain. Guts, the manga's protagonist, accomplished many military achievements using that sword such as slaying a hundred mercenaries single-handedly. So, imagine my elation upon finding a similar looking sword usable in Dark Souls! Maybe the people from FROM SOFTWARE are also fans of Berserk, and purposefully put Berserk references like this weapon? Could just be a coincidence though.

Zweihänder Landsknecht pride! historically accurate vs. stylish impractical...you know what got my vote! aside from that it is just the plain better item ingame for reasons already stated.

    This. It does wicked damage.

On-topic though: i'm going with the zweihander, mainly because the greatsword looks completely retarded (seriously Tarkus, you could at least put a crossguard on it).

I like the greatsword because i think it looks better and when you manually aim the strong attack you can hit those backstab fishers easier than with the zwei's strong attack. thats just my opinion and experiences though.

For minimal stats, I'd say the Zwei. But the big difference is the moveset. With the Leo Ring and the strong stab attack of the Greatsword (+ Red Tearstone Ring, Dragon roar, etc.), it could very well be the most powerful tool to one-shot bosses with a pure pelee build biggrin

I like both but my vote goes to Zweihander because it does look way better then the greatsword.

Realistically, the greatsword should do more damage than the zweihander.Neither are very sharp, the damage comes from the weight of the weapon hitting you and the greatsword is heavier.

My vote goes to the greatsword for the ability to do insane damage if paired with the leo ring. Also, it's the weapon that Iron Tarkus uses.

If you can predict where they are going without using the auto targeting you can do a full 360 turn and catch them off guard and do more damage.

Everyone mentions Greatsword because Tarkus uses it.

No one points out the Seigmeyer of Catarina (who's wrath you shall face) uses the Zwei.

They got the same range on the R1s. For the R2s the difference is that with the Zwei you move forward a lot, while with the Greatsword you stay in place. I think the Greatsword reaches further away from the hitbox of the player in this case though.

I know the Greatsword is supposedly equal length on the R1 but it just looks shorter to me and feels shorter in my hands. I've used both of them a lot and the Zwei seems to be the longer weapon, especially on the roll pokes.

I agree Ghadis, I don't know why but the Zwei just feels bigger.

I also find that I seem to get BS'd a lot more using the Greatsword than I do using the Zwei

It's almost like when you swing it the Greatsword turns your back to them a little more than the Zwei does (I don't think it actually does, but it feels like it does with the extra BS's I seem to get).

Really though, the weight and few extra str points needed is what really seals it, when I'm trying to make a fast rolling character using a huge weapon those 2 units and 4 points make a fairly big difference.
