Post by Wilkinson3424 on Mon May 20, 2013 12:31 am

If you've watched any of the gameplay videos from IGN (I believe) Then you'll know that there are DRAGONS in the new Dark souls! Is DkS I & DkS II related in any way? Because in DkS I Dragons are poof gone dead bye bye. Im not too educated on the subject so, enlighten me if I'm missing something.

People think Dark Souls II takes place before Dark Souls, so it's only natural that there be dragons everywhere.

But the undead seem to be everywhere in the game as well, so unless it takes place during the dragon war or w/e the **** it's called, there is going to be some conflict on the subject.

I'm assuming it is during the war, as Bonfires are already around.

Not dragons, the developers clearly stated that they were wyverns and drakes.

Oh yeah! Dragons are really grayish... sit still things. I figured those were drakes. I think what threw me off was the whole "Mansion of the Dragons" or w/e it was called.

They are not Dragons...they are Bridge Wyverns. Lore-wise they had explained that the mansion of dragons was an area where dragons were experimented on. Also, there were many dragons in DkS, we had Gaping Dragon, Seath the Scaleless, the Everlasting Dragon, Kalameet and the undead dragons. I though they were extinct!

Those lords don't know how to do their job! I mean, they let Kalameet who was simply just living around near their freaking castle just waltz around and do whatever he pleases. Well, I'm sure they claimed credit for its death after an unknown stranger came in and sent it to the abyss.

    Jerks.

They're all somewhat deformed progenitors of the everlasting dragons, save for the one in Ash Lake, who happens to be hidden as well. So yeah, they're officially extinct because nobody knows about last surviving one winking

Kalameet was dead during the present timeline and he is drastically different when compared to the stone dragons anyway, so I wouldn't count him as a dragon, lore-wise

yeah only seath and the everlasting dragon of ash lake were true dragons. All the other dragons were dragonkin but not actual dragons. But if one dragon can hide away on a hidden island for centuries couldn't cother dragons manage to hide away as well?

Since when are "true dragon" and "everlasting dragon" different things?

Kalameet isn't a cross-breed, but he doesn't have stone scales, therefore he isn't an everlasting dragon.

I love it when people say that and it's supposed to mean something.

A dragon is a dragon. If a reptile has wings, scales, files and breathes fire, I think it's safe to safe it's a dragon. It's like dragon racism silly

But anyways to answer the OP- We have been told it is set in a different land. The fact is the whole lore of the dragons, lords taking over etc was very specific to lordran. As the next game is in another land supposedly then it's wholly possible for there to be flame, dragons, lords and god knows what else.

As you travel round lordran its plain to see- it's totally secluded off from any other lands. As a result it is totally feasible that anything and everything could be different to dark souls 1, as the new game is set in another place.

There's actually a pretty big difference between dragons, wyverns, drakes, and wyrms....

Cus from where I'm standing, wyverns, drakes/whatever are just sub races of dragon- like how a yorkshire terrier is different to a greyhound, or a tabby cat different to a sphynx cat.

They're all dragons, they've just got subtle difference

I think i have better comparison:
    Dragons are dogs.
Wyverns are hyenas, they look like dogs, but they descend from very early rodent-ish cats.

    Convergent whatever-is-the-equivalent-of-evolution-in-Lordran.

I think one of the devs said that "The everlasting dragons are not living, they are a part of nature, like death and like" or something like that.

Drakes are smaller dragons (maybe an immature dragon or member of a sub-species) and "wyrm" generally refer to the most ancient and powerful dragons.

That's in "real life" lore, not Dark Souls, "real" wyverns also have 4 limbs, unlike Dark souls ones that have 6
"real" dragons have 6 limbs, unlike Skyrim ones that have 4.

The bridge wyvern is also referred to in-game as a drake.
And why would the developers specifically call the beasts in the gameplay footage wyverns if they are not inspired by the "real" wyverns?
They could just have used "drake" to separate them from the everlasting dragons like they did in dks1.
