Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Demo

Post by MinedSafe on Fri Jan 20, 2012 5:03 pm

I just got the Demo today. I must say its....horrible Its Pegi 18 but looks like for 12 year olds. What a disappointment. Totally arcade style fight same as in other games like, Devil My Cry. Not fun at all. Why o why I was counting to replace Dark Souls for a bit but its not going to happen. If you think the controls in DS are messed up you haven seen Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I m so shocked that I can't find the words;)

Have you guys think the same ? Any one played demo ?

    I disagree completely.

The game isn't meant to be Dark Souls. While I do find myself dodging every attack because of DkS's conditioning, I greatly enjoyed the Demo. I wish I had more time, but I enjoyed the weapon systems. I played a Greatsword/Daggers combination. I managed to get the Might/Finesse fate card just before my time expired. The Fate system is very intriguing. The art style is unique, and the armor has a good look to it. The late game things look very appealing and worth working towards. The world is massive and is provided with interesting lore and geography, and I'm very interested in how it came to be that your character is absent of a pre-determined future. It was very nostalgic in many ways, and it had the feel of the original Fable. It's not the prettiest game in the world, but I enjoyed it. I'm tempted to buy it.

It may not be what I like in Dark Souls, but it has features of other games I like.

The demo was timed? I guess I got sick of it before I reached that point... Oh no, wait, it froze on me.

Amalur wasn't a game that was on my radar, but I download all the high profile demos every week so I decided to try it out today.

First thing: the camera controls are insufferable. Accelerating camera movement, really? Horrible idea. Not to mention the camera is floaty--and so are the player movements, while I'm on the subject.

And the art style? I agree with OP, it looks childish.

I'm not going to dwell on it too much because I hate to be too negative about a subject, but I also thought the demo was terrible. As soon as I saw the EA logo I had a bad feeling... Then came the camera controls, the art style, the generic combat system... and then for some reason my sound cut out. I'd hear a snippet of combat sounds, or a monster roaring, or music, and then it would cut out again and leave the game in silence. That lasted a few minutes, and then the game just completely froze. So I restarted my PS3 and deleted this 2.5gb turd.

    @Winston:

I respect your positive opinion of the game. Myself, though, I wouldn't have the patience to deal with the camera controls or the uninspired gameplay long enough to get any significant place in the story.

I didn't much like the Fable games but then I'm English and I found the 'olde worlde England' setting boring and a bit demeaning and the characters were caricatures of what other nationalities think of as 'english'. I suppose if you're American this has a certain novelty value but it annoys me. We may not all be cosmopolitan sophisticates but then we're not all yokels either. It's for that reason that I wont be getting Kingdoms of Amalur on release. As for the demo, when I saw how much of my monthly download allowance (nearly three gigs, you've got to be joking!) it would swallow and realised that it would take ages to download on PS3, I gave it a miss.

I do concede that the English are not the only nationality to suffer from stereotyping in games. For example, if I was an American, I wouldn't much like being depicted as a 'bald space marine' with a badass attitude which seems par for the course in games like 'Gears of War' but it's a cooler image than being depicted as a 'country bumpkin'.

That's it, rant over. I'll get me coat, as they say where I come from.

I thought it was alright, however i play a very large variety of game genres(and DMC has way better gameplay than this), but its nothing like dark souls really... and nowhere near as good silly. However i gotta agree the games art looks a bit too bright/childish, however it is supposed to look less dark than other rpgs out atm. I felt it was very similar to fable except far less childish than it, as fable just keeps getting simplified and simplified every game. I played it a little while ago now and can't remember what the camera was like I'll probably buy it but not straight away.

Gotta say thing that bugged me most about it... equiped shields aren't shown unless your blocking... they just pop out of thin air... that just iritates me

yea in the past I probably would of liked it but after playing dark souls it just feels so cheap another hack and slash no real sense of danger like in DS I just love dark souls best game EVER!! big grin

I thought the conbat system was great. The graphics could use some work, the story is increadibly boring, and the game is too easy even on "hard" mode, but the controls are great and it has a good combat system. Honestly, I think the combat system is better then some other games. The only thing it needs is less cutscenes, less talking, and maybe duel weilding long swords.
