Who the hell was in the Painted World? Empty Who the hell was in the Painted World?

Post by SadPanda Sat May 11, 2013 6:35 pm

So looking in depth to the Painted World specifically, there are a few things I noticed.
    1. There's a gold coin.
The description of the coins say: "Those who dream of returning to the outside world are fond of carrying these around." It also has the image of Allfather Lloyd, so it would be safe to assume the person was in the Way of White.
    2. The Dark Ember
The Dark Ember description says: "The church long hid the forbidden black ember". Hinting that the Way of White was there.
    3. One of the pardoners died.
Most of the time when you find an armor set or NPC specific item, the NPC is either there, died there, or went hollow there. In a world where Velka rules, why would she allow the people protecting the world kill one of the people she holds so closely. Perhaps the same person that held the gold coin is the same person that killed the pardoner? And from what we know of pardoners, they're pretty damn good with swords, so no weak thing could have killed him.
    3. One random Knight of Berenike
The other two Knight's of Berenike are in places that Balder Knights also appear. In the parish, and in Sen's Fortress. But notice WHERE they are, the Berenike knight in the parish is by the statue's of Gwyn and Gwyndolin, the gods of the Way of White. And the other is guarding Sen's Fortress with Balder knights. So why in the hell would there be one in the Painted World? Bringing me to #4
    4. If the Painting Guardians guard the painting, then why is the set in the Painted World, and where are the guardians?
If there is a Painting Guardian set in the Painted World, then where are the Painting Guardians? Which brings us to #5:
    5. Why in the hell is everything broken?
Seriously, it looks like a war went down there, and more than likely could have. The clues point to it, the one Berenike knight that is just out of place, the gold coin from a follower of the Way of White, the Dark Ember description, the dead pardoner, no Painting Guardians, everything. I have no idea why the Way of White would want to go to the Painted World, but you guys go ahead there. And #6...
    6. Who in the F%&# is Xanthous King Jeremiah?
The Xanthous Crown says: "A mysterious item once worn by the Xanthous
King Jeremiah, the legendary exile. No one
knows where it came from." This guy just comes out of nowhere in a world of mysteries, from a place not mentioned in any lore.
This is weird guys, feel free to post what you think. Sorry for wall 'o' text.

    About Jeremiah

It's known that Pyromancy is about as socially unacceptable as a man wearing lipstick, so I assume pyromancers were banished, hence the tumor zombies that use fire spells, Acid Surge, and Fire Surge.

Now look at Jeremiah, not only is he is a pyromancer, but he knows Chaos Pyromancies. It's safe to assume this is evil in the eyes of the Gods, so Jeremiah gets taken to the Painted World.

I never noticed it either, I had to watch a Youtube video to get that speculation, I just like spreading it because I feel like I'm an intellectual person for spreading good knowledge.

also, has anyone noticed that Xanthous's crown has some blood spots on it? I'm just going to assume he carries a bunch of bodies around in his hat.

    Also for the Dark Ember

It makes Occult Weapons, which can kill the gods.

If you could banish your Achilles' heel, would you?

    Obvious yes

And for everything being broken, I assume it eroded due to the what appears to be harsh conditions in the Painted World

    1. Anyone could have dropped the coin. I honestly don't have a response for this one.

    2. Occult energy strikes me as what essentially amounts to teh dark soul; it's like antimatter when combined with the "positive" lord soul of light.

    3. Tarkus made it through; it's entirely possible there were still some Knights with him who also made it though.

    4. They guard the painting; it never says they only guard it from the outside. For all we know, there may have been a few stationed on the inside in order to keep any revolutionaries down.

    5. It's a painting. It was painted broken.

    6. Jeremiah: The TRUE Firstborn of Gwyn.

I always thought it was more likely that he just has some kind of horrible tumorous growth under there, like an advanced form of what the tumor zombies have. Moreover, the character itself is a reference to "The King in Yellow" and, as such, lacks any true lore in the game beyond what you get from his items.

Essentially, think of the Painted World as Lordran's recycle bin. Anything which the gods didnt wish the rest of the world to see (or be able to use against them) was rather town in there. The occult weapons are a major threat to the gods, hence the reason Havel had to hide his so cleverly. It seems quite possible that the biggest threat to them, however, was perfectly content with her exile. In a way, she was safer in the Painted World than she ever would have been in Lordran.

It is likely the Way of White was in the Painted World due to everything the OP said and one other thing that not many people seem to know. If you kill Priscilla it counts as a sin. Also, I think that if you are in the Way of White, you are kicked out of the covenant (I'll check this soon). Also, I think the location of the Heavy Berenike Knight is a sign that Priscilla is either:
    1. Something of Seathe's creation (due to a knight being in Sen's, where the Serpent Men are, and in the Parish, where there is a Chaneller overlooking him).
    2. Priscilla is a Firekeeper. This is a possibility imo because the knight in Sen's seems to guard the Firekeeper's Soul. This is also kind of ties into 1, because Seathe did some experiments on Firekeepers.
About the dead pardoner, maybe the outcasts of the Painted World killed him. Are we all sure that the outcasts and Velka's minions get along very well? Also, the presence of Xanthous, who is a reference to "The King in Yellow" meaning he could be, and probably is, completely insane, goes to show that killing could be common in the Painted World. Xanthous could've killed some of the Way of White's followers, and maybe some of Velka's. The Painted World is in disreapair probably because it was painted that way and the inhabitants don't care much for its condition.

This all leads to the idea that the Way of White may be plotting to kill the gods. Why do they go into the Tomb of Giants? We don't even know their true intentions. We just are told that they are searching for kindling, but then why go into the Tomb of Giants? Their intentions could be much darker...
Sorry for the wall of text and if this makes no sense/has already been said.

I think the Painted World was Velka's HQ until the dawn of the gods. Then, the way of white used it to exile the heretics like Jeremiah or the "abobinations" like Priscilla.
Maybe the berenike guy was part of a WayOfWhite expedition but got hollowed.

Also, when i doubt, blame Seath.

Kindling was Nito's power, and I doubt Pinwheel sent a memo to everyone about how he stole Kindling from Nito, who just wants to chill in his coffin.

Now, I do not know if this has been mentioned earlier, but I believe (Speculation comming up) that there was a church of Velka (We know about all the Velka related items in the Painted world.) and the god probably feared them, because Velka, the godess of sin, had granted them the power to damage the gods (Occult).

So the gods decided/ordered someone to create the Painted world, in order to trap what they thought would harm them. Now I think the majority of this hypothetical church of Velka was trapped there, eventually went hollow.

As for the the pyromancies, we know that the attempt to recreate the first flame from a soul failed, and created the Bed of Chaos and Chaos Demons. Perhaps they trapped powerful pyromancers (Especially those related to chaos pyromancies) in order to prevent it from happening again, perhaps out of fear?

And at last, Priscilla... I think that she was "trapped" there (I use the term loosely, as she seems content being there. Perhaps from mistreatment in younger days?

When the gods discovered her lifehunt ability (which I think is innate to her, different in some way to occult magic) they sent her to the Painted world. Now she, having lived a life akin to hell, embraced this new, cold world, taking up the role as it protector. BEcause she understood the danger of the hollowed there, she does not allow them to return, just the player character.

So, I think there is no special "who" in the Painted world, just trapped persons, having hollowed without any hope of escape. The gold coin? Might be someone carrying it as a memento while traveling to Lordran after discovering that s/he is undead.

Now, as for Jeremiah, I think the "Xanthous King" is a self imposed title.

I support this theory, after all the annex key says that there was once a church there
