Is there absolutely any reason to use a greatshield in PvP besides turtling and ganking? I know the defenses are amazing but the weight and being unable to parry seems like a horrible trade.

Re: Greatshields
With things like magic, Havel's is great for defying it. See some perseuers coming? Block. Dark Bead? Pfft. Crystal Soul Spear? Get on ma lel, scrub.
They are good for blocking in general. Besides, what else are you going to do with a greatshield? The shieldbash is worthless.

Re: Greatshields
if youre gonna use a greatshield you better use havel's since the others will get destroyed by magic(maybe not stone or giant shield). one of my favorite things to do is leave the other slot empty so that I can parry, just hold up your shield until your opponent takes out a shotel or any weapon then witch to your fist and parry, works for me. I hope from really buffs greatshields for dks2.

Re: Greatshields
Black Iron Shield for Pyro, Stone Shield for magic. The advantages of greatshields is they have superb stability and superb defensive abilities to one or more elements. You use them to block, rather than dodge.
Tanks in their entirety are under-appreciated on dark souls.

Re: Greatshields
I always thought it was common knowledge that the strength of a greatshield is in it's efficiency at blocking. Have the other person spam and you block it all with losing minimal stamina and then you're open to spam back.
You can spam until you have a sliver of stamina left and then block and still block their attacks.
Greathsields are for people too slow to roll and too clumsy to parry(because let's face it, the timing for parries is weird on pvp)

I can't remember who; but someone posted a video on how to use the Havel's greatshield buff in combination with the Dragon form for huge damage and huge poise.

Well, at least it looks badass. :3 Also, great R2 poise damage I suppose.

Re: Greatshields
They are pretty bad honestly. Since they have no deflection, weapons that inflict bleed or poison will be very dangerous, and the dang greatshield of Artorias doesn't protect you either.

I really hope the do buff them. The bash could be more useful.RantFromRant wrote:if youre gonna use a greatshield you better use havel's since the others will get destroyed by magic(maybe not stone or giant shield). one of my favorite things to do is leave the other slot empty so that I can parry, just hold up your shield until your opponent takes out a shotel or any weapon then witch to your fist and parry, works for me. Re: Greatshields
The stone greatshield is very similar to Havel's in regards to its general imperviousness to magic (80% block, instead of 90%), while being a bit lighter and having a lower str requirement. Another nice aspect to it is it is really wide, and makes it very hard for people to see if you have a pyro glove/talisman or small weapon out in your other hand while you are blocking. I love it and the sunlight shield for that reason, as it's easier to surprise folks and seems to throw off parries a bit by giving folks slightly less time to see the swing and react.

@befowler I LOVE the stone shield, I actually used it a little on my first run but then I realized how they suck against certain builds so I stopped using them, imo the stone shield is the best looking greatshield in the game, I still use it sometimes when im coop'ing.

Re: Greatshields
Become a true turtle! Fatroll doesn't matter now. Just get lots of poise and defense. Spam kicks for people who roll towards you or fish (occasional shield bash has similar impact but also damages). Trade with people who don't have much poise.
Bonus points for using a spear or rapier and poking someone successfully while still blocking with the absurd stability keeping your stamina high.
Just make sure you have a way to deal with the inevitable "we've got a runner!" if invading. Xbow is the lowest investment option to drop 200-300+ on someone in that case.
If facing gankers, spam force and use fire tempest after knockdown with a ton of poise .

I hope they make the shield-bash a knock-down on low-poise characters, and a stagger on high-poise characters, like the dragonslayer greatbow.

Re: Greatshields
Simple. I dead angle you with a UGS and stunlock you after two hits. Or I bleed you through the shield with the gold tracer, or I roll bs your turtling, or parry your predictable spamming, etc. Turtling might work against players without skill but it has no place in high level PvP, there are a lot of ways to deal with it.TheMeInTeam wrote:Become a true turtle! Re: Greatshields
You state that like you Greatshields were made to be used for bad purposes.
Did you ever think why you use a Medium or Small Shield over a Greatshield? It can parry? Sure, but what about the people who use Greatshields who are thinking "Why do people use normal shields?"
It's more of personal preference, just because you're ganking or turtling doesn't mean a Greatshield is better.

Yeah, I am usually a medium shield guy, but I started using the stone greatshield recently because with the flickering I needed something to keep hosts alive in coop. So many people were just abusing dark magic outrageously with invisible pursuers etc, plus I've been hanging around the township and folks love to WoG spam people off walkways there. The stone greatshield is glorious, it soaks magic well but also widely so you can cover hosts better (it can eat nearly an entire DB spread even at mid range), and hides my black flame assault until it is too late. I often throw strong magic shield on it which is completely over the top -- 100% magic resist, plus pvp deflection, and so much stability even WoG barely moves you. It's love.

Re: Greatshields
I must agree with you. And if you are smart about you you won't get dead-angled to death. People underestimate tanks a great deal(like what Rynn said). One of my favorite characters is a giant battle-mage that can take any spell hit with Havel's shield and then destroy them with a wide-variety of other spells. The only thing that seems to kill me is when people dead-angle Wrath of the Gods. I am good at utilizing my fat-roll but I don't stand a chance if people spam a dead-angled Wrath of the Gods at me.

How can you dead angle with WoG? Does your position compared to the enemy affects that?
