Difference between cartoon and anime? Empty Difference between cartoon and anime?

Post by Dibsville Wed May 08, 2013 8:27 pm

What do you consider a cartoon and what would you consider an anime?

Do you consider them to be the same thing, or does one have features that the other does not?

For me, a cartoon is anything who's target audience is young children (Spongebob, Beyblade, Pokemon, etc.), while an anime is anything who's target audience is... well... anything else (Soul Eater, Naruto, Eureka 7, etc.)

Do you define them to be the same thing or completely different?

An anime is a Japanese cartoon.

    That's how I view it.

There are anime that target kids, and cartoons that target adults (Such as Clone High or Venture Brothers).

I have to say anime is just superior to american cartoons, but that's mainly because it is allowed to encapsulate so many more genres than in america.

Anime can do whatever it wants in japan. Kids shows, adult thriller, heartfelt drama, chic rom commy stuff- hell it even does porn.

In american cartoons, you get the nice cookie cut genres of "Bland kid show with no depth A" or "Adult cartoon full of obscene humour B", with absolutely *** all inbetween.

I'm not saying american cartoons are bad (south park is one of my favourite comedy shows), but it just doesn't have the same room to breathe as japanese anime does

I agree with the whole one is American and one is Japanese, but there are obvious differences if the way culture has shaped them. How Anime will most always have a plotline and cartoons will most always have jokes inserted in every other line. There are obvious cross-breeds, like Boondocks, Avatar: The Last Air Bender, and the Legend of Korra(probably others that I do not know about) so it is hard to give it a specific difference with how it has adapted to culture.

The thing that I feel is or was, I'm not sure if it is still used, was that anime in the U.S.A were being "Americanized" such as early Pokémon as a strong example of this as the stations that had the right to air them in the U.S. were editing certain things that are common in Japan to the American culture equal. So naturally the two were harder to differentiate to a degree.

I don't understand why America is so protective.
Supposedly, we want a brighter future for our kids and we want to teach them good morals
Yet Japanese people watch things that people in America would reject without even thinking about it, and look where they're at... ahead of us.

You can not watch these and tell me the first one is better than the second one:

Personally I enjoy American Cartoons a lot more, but I have a strong dislike of nearly every anime I've ever seen.

In regards to quality I'd just say it's preference, both have a ton of ****. And both have the good few, just like anything. But when you get into which one you like more, then it doesn't matter since personal preference will be different for each person.

Most animes have a storyline, plot, and are infinitely more mature than a cartoon.

There's also less censored stuff, because it's "bad to show violence in cartoons" even though our kids just sit behind Xboxs and PS3s screaming profanities at each other over CoD is just fine.

Why of course. It is perfectly fine for 11 year olds to scream at each other that the other person is a cum-guzzling *** **** that has no-life, will never get laid and will always live in their moms basement. But if a television show has a nipple-slip for half a second on an adult sitcom? Somebody's getting sued then.

Ok, just as a question, is Avatar the Last Airbender a Cartoon, because it's American, or Anime, because of it's stylings?

    Also, new pokesong SUCKS.

    I totally disagree there.

Most cartoons have stories, and plots. Just as most forms of entertainment media do. I also don't find anime to be anymore mature than Cartoons, they often show things like gore and sexuality but a lot of them do not handle it in a mature way.

Agree. Especially when many animes fill in episode time with their own variety of "plot". You know, because that girl falling over had to have those ten full seconds of showing under her skirt and down her cleavage.

To be fair, if you're looking for a "mature" anime, the only Mainstream one your going to find is Full Metal Alchemist.

    Note the word Mainstream.
