Aesthetics in pvp? Empty Aesthetics in pvp?

Post by SirArchmage Wed May 08, 2013 11:03 pm

Surely I am not the only one to do this. I may be the only one to this extent, but still, there must be others.
I will willingly sacrifice an effective thing in a game simply because I do not enjoy the way it looks. I do this in many games. Whether it is physically(well, for games it is virtually) or symbolically, if something is ugly I will not use it most of the time. In Dark Souls I use the Great Lord Greatsword instead of the Man-Serpent Greatsword because the Man-serpent one looks just awful. Even in Call of Duty I mainly just use guns that look great. I see this as one of my biggest flaws despite how willingly I do it. And now, I have gone so far as to make a character completely based on killing people while looking amazing.

    http://mmdks.com/28x4

It is now my favorite character. The porcelain mask just looks too great. Along with the maiden robes I feel like a bloody goddess of fiery death(and one hard-to-kill goddess at that). If I could get over it I know I could be a very great player. With this I get normally 7 kills for each death(Random invasions in Anor Londo and the Dukes Archives). Anyone else have this problem? Or am I just insane :| ?

Edit: Side note, has anyone played without their HUD on? Makes everything so much more intense. You need to try it.

I'm exactly the same way, I'm willing to give up something just so i can wear what I think looks cool. This is the reason why I usually always wear the Sorcerer and Black Sorcerer boots. This piece is my signature piece that I put on my characters. In regards to the Wanderer's coat, which do you guys prefer? The male or female version? I personally prefer the female, because of the fur piece around the neck.

    No, you are not alone.

Logan's Big Hat went on any build I could work it out on.

I think some things are too God awful to wear: MoF, MoC, HSWC....I think you can pull of the MoM with a "kabuki" theme, but its sooooooooo played out.

Logan's hat has the highest magic defense for a headpiece though. Not really an aesthetic if it's actually useful :suspect:
Either way, agreed on Logan's Hat, I still use it whenever I'm doing 0 poise builds (my SL 55 Painting Guardian uses it)

Its not that useful for its weight. But ya, and,

I'd wear it if it lowered all defenses, drained my health for no reason and made me fat-roll...okay maybe not.

I'd wear it even if those things happened, but I just recently started using mid-roll, and there's no way I'm going any lower.

I try to go with style and functionality as much as I can; but if it comes to it I prefer style.

I agree that Chester's Longcoat looks awesome; but I could do without the rose >_>.

I am not good enough to go without poise, so even if I hate the glowy effect I usually have a Wolf's ring on.

I really do care about looks, cant fight if I don't enjoy looking at my build. I love the msgs though, the greatlord gs is so plain looking imo. every time I see this http://mmdks.com/28xn I just chain bs them.

Glad to know I am not the only one that does this. It is weird, because I quite honestly pay very little attention to a person's appearance in real life, and I will gladly choose a game with horrible graphics over a game with amazing graphics if the mechanics in the latter are horrible. But when it comes to my character in a game.....

Lets just say that I once spent an hour customizing a character in Dragon Age 2. Just to delete the character and redo it.

I like games that don't have character customisings, as I can just get in and only have to worry about armour and such.

With Dark Souls it's pretty straightforward; Commoner, Short Hair on Guys, Ponytail A on girls, Dark Brown, start the game.

Every time i see this I chain backstab them.

On topic: I'm willing to spend few extra points in endurance just to use something else than hollow waistcloth. It looks awful. I've been trying different armor setups to make it looks decent but it always looks awful no matter what i use. I'm silly and care about looks and even the name of my character, and that's the biggest reason why i don't like to use the megamule.

I've literally spent an hour or so in pregame custom cosmetic options on several games.

I don't care about looks all that much. That said I don't really mind the way DingySoldierKnight looks since I'm so used to seeing it. (I swear if we search the archives theres proof in there of how long I've used it)

I try to wear the Onion helm as much as possible (giants and hswc with wolfs) but that much poise isn't needed on most builds and I often can't spare the weight or want the fairy ears on.

Aesthetics are absolutely necessary for me.
My standard for buildcraft is that it must look the part it plays.
For example, my mages must look like mages. Robbed, and lightly armored.
Strength builds should look either barbaric and ragged, or massive hulks of iron.
Dex toons should be streamlined and lethal looking, usually with some sort of color involved on the chestpiece (Honestly don't know why the color thing is how it is.)
Quality builds are fairly grabbag though. Anything that looks good is fine for a jack of all melee weapons.

the roleplay aspect is a must for me, just like kazumoshi said. my biggest gripe with the game is that there are no proper massive beards...every barbarian and mage is incomplete -____-

I'm the same way. My characters have to look good and their style fit with their profession. Many times I have chosen not to use a better piece of equipment because I felt it didn't fit the character. The good thing about Dark Souls, it really doesn't matter what you wear or carry, because you can still be successful with a little bit of extra skill and effort.

Looks are actually the most important thing to me on any build, although weapon is a close second. It makes no sense, but I fight noticeably better when my character looks good (I also use the GLGS instead of the MSGS because I also think the latter looks hideous). My latest discovery was how freaking epic the royal helm looks with the armor of the glorious, it's like they were made for each other.

p.s. When I say "good" I don't necessarily mean beautiful; one of my favorites is actually a boar's helm, gough's chest, smough's leggings, and havel's gauntlets. You look like an absolutely hideous ogre, yet all the pieces match up surprisingly well. I've even had folks copycat this

I always have and always will go with looks over function. The game is boring if I don't look cool winning. Besides, I believe my skill offsets the disadvantage I put myself in stat-wise.

I take this to an equally extreme level. I liked the eastern armour set so much that I use chaos blade to go with the eastern feel and went to END 57 so I can fast roll with it. that's the only reason I went to END 57 >_<

I'd wear the ugliest, hodge podge armor concievable if it gave me an advantage. The exception is when doing cos plays.
