DS beginner needs some PvP build advice Empty DS beginner needs some PvP build advice

Post by gods Wed May 01, 2013 11:45 am

    Hey there,
I am fairly new to Dark Souls (almost finished my 1st playthrough) and want to try out some PvP (on PC). Since I am a total beginner, only played offline so far, I want to start out with defending random invasions and invade via the darkmoon convenant. As for the build, I realy enjoy fast paced melee hybrids with some casting support. Therefore I've choosen a 45/30 dex/faith hybrid using darkmoon blade in conjuction with great scythe +15 or uchigana +15.

This is my build so far: http://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/?c=286930170487374450

Stuff I am still not quite sure about:
    - Is SL125 good for random invations or is it already to high? Would SL50 be more suitable (though I probably could not go for a dex/faith hybrid due to lack of stat points)?
    - I've read that the Dark Wood Grain Ring is almost a must have in PvP. Is that true? Additionaly, is fast roll a must have?
    - What poise breakpoint should I aim for? Maybe switch DWGR with Wolf Ring?
    - Since I already have 30 points into faith would it be better if I cut points in dex and go for 50 faith + an occult weapon?
    - How's my choice of armor?

Thanks a lot, I'll appreciate any help!

Tough one dude, darkmoon is almost dead on the PC. Went back to it there last week for a bit(helping a mate out) and tried a darkmoon build up to sl50 it was dead and i gave up, got maybe 5 invasiosn in 2 days. I think it's because PC is kinda quiet, gfwl sucks and noone seems to indite. Ended up going darkwraith buying a buckeltoad of cracked red eyes and going back to darkmoon and using red eyes to invade.

Sl100-120 is fairly busy on pc, in oollacille, kiln and the burg, its very hit and mioss everywhere else.

DWGR is good, give a go and see what happens, then try with more poise and armour and see what suits you best.

Poise i'm not an expert but with dwgr it shouldn't matter as you'll dodge most. I think 53, and around 70ish are break points, 2 handed greatswords and utlra mgreatswords.

You have darkmoonblade so occult shouldn't matter.

Armours grand, got decent poise for a dwgr build.

    I'll adress what I can.

Here is a link to the average host SL for specific areas. Massive props to reim for this.

Sl 125 is high for random invasion. You'll come across the occasional high level quester, but I say SL125 is more suited for dueling/hosting.

dark wood grain ring used to be a "must" before the dlc. It got changed. It's still a strong ring but not a must at all. Fast roll is also by no means a must, but if you like fast weapons it helps greatly.

There is a section of poise brake points for specific weapons (including a helpful link to phantomEWGF bs/parry tutorial vid, a must watch)

Generally the faster the weapon the less poise you need especially with fast roll. More poise is never bad regardless of your build. .

Occult weapons do split damage (they have to bypass an opponent's magic + physical defence) You're almost always better off going with a +15 With slb or dmb you will deal monster damage.

Haven't looked at the armor. Can't find the link to the armor optimizing tool... sorry.

darkmoon is difficult for pvp, as u will get lots of "invasion failed". u should have some knowledge about where ppl go for pvp and about the sl they are if u try invading as a dm. as it was mentioned before: oolacile township, royal forest, kiln and burg are for sure good places to try invading. if you have troubles invading go to the forest and host there... should still be active

adjusting your build a little towards sl100 and below may probably increase your chances of "random invasions" outside the designated pvp areas: to do so you can lower dex from 45 to 25 or 30 and lower endurance if you replace the dwgr with the wolf ring.

fortunately the dwgr isn't a must anymore! but poise is, especially if you start to pvp: try to get at least 40 or 53

i would aim for fast-roll! med-roll is also okay but fast roll should be better to start

don't go occult! dex/faith is a good and viable combination, btw: the miracles you selected in that mugen monkey link are well chosen

1.) DWGR is not that important at all.

2.) Lightroll isn't a necessity and choosing between light or mid roll is up to preference, either one looks fine.

3.) SL 125 is too high for random invasions. Go for 30-60.

4.) For that current build, I'd switch DWGR ring for wolf ring. At 30 faith, canvas talisman has more adjustment than darkmoon talisman. I'd take 5 points from dex and put them into faith. That way you don't suffer from diminishing returns(and canvas would still be better than darkmoon talisman).

Since you're a darkmoon and invade down and want random invasions, I would go to SL 60.

    Thanks for the advice!

This is the updated Version: http://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/?c=439886040694081391

    - SL 60
    - 1.5k life
    - Fast roll
    - Reaches 53 poise cap
    - Uses Uchigana +15 with DMB / +5 lightning weapon if DMB runs out.

Let's see how this works out.

Just a small suggestion. Hold talisman in your other hand so you can cast wotg then attack/bs while they're stunned.

*edit* I'd also consider dropping faith to 30 to increase some endurance or maybe even another attunement slot, but that's your call.

    here is a suggestion. http://mmdks.com/25jt
you can drop the bow if you like and get to use a 3 weight unit shield (blood shield, grass crest, crest, dragon crest, spider shield, just to name some good ones)
