    LunarFog Build: Moonlight Glass

Post by LunarFog on Mon Apr 29, 2013 11:25 pm

    http://mmdks.com/24b2

The flavor of the week are glass cannons. Decided to incorporate one into a modified version of my "Moonlight queen" build. Max damage is achieved for my spells, bow, and rapier. Quickest casting time is achieved. Menu-swap between Ring of Fog and Bellowing dragoncrest ring.

The use of Red tearstone, persuers, and homing soul mass weren't viable since this is also a stealth build. It'll be first one to hit once or twice wins. And since I'll be hiding in the forest and have long range at my disposal if a backstab doesn't kill somebody, I think that'll be me.

    I have one objection!

Switch the soul spear to Crystal Soul Spear.

Aside from that I love stealth. People underestimate it in Dark Souls. And in the forest? You will be a ghost. A magic ghost, but still a ghost.

I would, but as far as I know, you can only get one crystal soul spear per playthrough, which I'm using.

I see this build in the forest all the time, a lvl 100 mage with very low HP, they always wait for another guy to invade even though i host by myself heh. Anyway id don’t know how reliable this build is but when i meet someone with it i roll bs them 70% of the time 1 shot kill or dead angle them, i think its very risky but it might prove to be good in a patient player’s hands.

Since this is a sneaky build, I’d switch Chameleon with Hidden Weapon, Chameleon is a mock spell nowadays it doesn’t really work anymore, especially in the forest, Hidden Weapon is actually useful, one time i used it to kill a guy and he sent me a msg saying i’m a hacker haha, but it won’t work on Velka’s and since you have high dex why not use the Rapier or Ricard’s, (i like Velka’s more though so i understand if you do too).

Yea. I'm introducing myself to magic. It's whateves. And to be fair, rapiers function pretty much exactly like spears. They're only shorter(but quicker)

Rapiers are superior versions of spears.
Lunar, you genuinely remind me of myself, I'm certain you'll reach this conclusion yourself soon.

And if you fall in love with Velka's the same as I, you'll probably make many more "spellblades" in the future to use it.

I've never made a serious spellblade build before so I could try it... I'm already in love with velka's rapier though.

    A few suggestions.
Master the Soulmass. It's the strongest sorcery in the game once you get a hang of it.
Soul Spear is a trap. Too few casts for PvE, Too low of a hit chance in PvP

Concerning PvE, I find that it is the ultimate Boss killer. Just whip that out during a boss fight and everything is a whole lot simpler.

Concerning PvP, I have to agree with you. A bit. I usually use crystal soul-mass, wait for them to go off, then right as the person tries to dodge it, or even right before they dodge it, I fire the soul spear at them while they are dodging. And if they try blocking, a crystal-soul mass and soul spear can break most guards. Sadly it is pretty much pointless though against someone that fast rolls. And hard to pull off without good dexterity.

I'm not sure if Rynn is talking about the soul spear spell class; as in soul spear and crystal soul spear or just soul spear. Soul Spear might not be worth it, but I think crystal soul spear is. It's useful as SirArchMage described, but also a simple CSS-CSS combo is extremely deadly. Considering this is a stealth build, there's every chance you'll be aiming at unsuspecting sitting ducks very often. But, if you're fairly obsevant it's not hard to time spell casts to hit people. Many with the heavy stunlock weapons swing predictably and often more than once. Katana users and gold tracer users often just flat out spam without a care in the world. I can reliably land MLGS R2s against players like this.

I would urge you to stack 2 cystal soul spears if at all possible, however. It would be nice to have a few to play with. You might also experiment with using Logan's catalyst instead of the TCC. I think the TCC will often just be overkill. I would guess there's a very narrow HP range that would get 1-shot with the TCC, but not Logan's. If you stacked dark magic, I wouldn't say that... but with standard magic (especially only having 3 offensive spell slots) I think the extra castings might be more valuable to you.

I definitely agree with Rynn about HCSM. In fact, my new favorite method of dealing with pursuers is to ignore them completely and cast CSS as HCSM goes off. People put way too much faith in pursuers sometimes. They'll run right up to you and help you out, trying to set off their precious little spell... be sure to walk right through the pursuers after they die and before the pursuers fade. big grin

Also... Rynn, you changed your avatar... sad I had such a crush on your old avatar!

I'd suggest switching the TCC catalyst to the left hand, and the composite bow to the right hand (so you can still parry with your bare fist). As someone who played a dex/pyro for a while, I learned that having your weapon & flame hand out is a very nice unpredictable combo when you're good with it. Same concept would apply here to the TCC catalyst.

I recently made an SL 120 darkmage build here that's fared pretty well in pvp. I think if you were to adjust it more to your playstyle you could exchange the flame hand for a shortbow (to still fast roll), and swap black flame for crystal soul spear (or whatever you'd prefer).

To be honest I'd have to disagree with some that claim Homing Crystal Soulmass is good...

In PvE, yeah, its pretty good. But in PvP I find it really sucks ***, having both used it and played against it. Within 5 minutes of pvp'ing a mage-friend of mine (when I first got Dark Souls), I got used to the spell and was never hit by it again. And the worst part is, people don't even have to roll to avoid it. They can just casually side-step... even at relatively close range... and all of the orbs will miss. It's very disappointing, but it feels that pursuers is the only "tracking" spell worth using, even if it's 2 slots.

Also, even if you're on a narrow walkway (like sen's fortress or the catacombs), you can simply walk backwards. Unless the mage is right in your face with the soulmass, they apparently have an invisible range limit where they just go ahead and disappear (and no, this is not because the mage re-casted soul mass).

    Just my 2 cents

You're using it wrong. Not trying to sound elitist when I say it, but there is a smart way to use Soulmass and a dumb way: most people do the dumb way. Soulmass only activates if you face less than 45 desgree's towards your opponent, so you can control when it goes off by simply not looking at the opponent. With precision you can even get only 1 of the 5 orbs to shoot at a time, which quickly makes this an impredictable fire whenever spell. I got countless hits with it on my stream today. If used with a brain/backed by understanding it's mechanics, it's the best ingame sorcery.

Thanks Rynn, I actually didn't realize you could control it by where you face. I just tried to play with the distance (I probably ended up doing that by accident anyway since the best way to move in and out quickly is unlocked) and use spell combos or use it to force someone to dodge and attack as they come out of the roll. I love HCSM and I've mostly been using it the dumb way! Imagine if you use it the non-dumb way!

And about the HCSM/CSS combo versus persuers... got another one yesterday. People cast pursuers and they think you're supposed to scurry away into the shadows and through the cracks. BS -- send real magic right back at 'em!

I have been playing with Crystal Soul Spear recently. And I found out some fun things. If you cast it at medium range, it will most likely miss. The guy will dodge or just strafe to the side. But, at maximum range, it's homing is ridiculous. I cast it on five different people in a row. None of them escaped it, even when they dodged. Not sure if it's homing gets different at long range or if it's just that people misjudge where it is from longer ranges, but some fights have started and ended simply with the first cast of that CSS.

Edit: Also, what Rynn speaks is true. I tried strafing this guy while I wasn't locked on and only partly facing him, and watching the crystal soul mass go off one by one as he got closer. Pretty useful information, especially since this is the first time I've even heard about it.

First off …I….I’m so proud of you. sad

    Rynn wrote:A few suggestions.

Soul Spear is a trap. Too few casts for PvE, Too low of a hit chance in PvP

HCSM underrated? TRUE...so true. Not only can you manipulate its activation, it forces your opponent to react. You can use it for set ups, buffs, menu-swapping, you can even use it to break poise on people with GMB.

As to CSS, I agree with Rynn. The only time I found it useful was in a Pursuers—CSS combo because of the inherent flaws with the silver pendant strategy. Also, with people who were used to that combo, you’ll have to lock-off cast CSS. Its completely doable, Pursuers helps you predict their roll for the most part, and with practice that combo becomes a little op. I stopped using it out of boredom.

So ya, HCSM is 2nd best sorcery and 2nd best utility spell/casting in game outside of Power Within. I say Strong Magic Shield is best sorcery in game, but that’s just my opinion. HCSM also lets you cast SMS with ease outside of a “boxing ring” or Burg type of environment.

Also, your build is kinda screamin DWGR. Lets look at the numbers. 20%...is it really that important? If your attack is hitting for 1,000, then you hit for 1,200. An extra 200 damage is nothing to scoff at, but you need, imo, high numbers to see a benefit. Running the elf ears, with BDCR, PW, and the TCC can create some nasty numbers, but I’m assuming your skill will compensate for the 20%, and also make you a little op with the DWGR.

I’d run your build like this: With DWGR and SMS

Thanks to Rynn, I realized how effective Dark Bead—Dark Orb can be, and since you’re a glass cannon, SMS could prove invaluable at certain times. Also, you can cast SMS on a Darkhand, and no one will ever see it. Also, at 45 dex, you’ll be utilizing casting time reduction with DB, DO, and HCSM.

Lastly, sing this to yourself in a leprechaun voice…
