Is Nito the only non-insane Lord?

Post by ExplodingPenguin on Sun Apr 28, 2013 5:41 am

It seems quite a lot of people go insane in Dark Souls- Brolaire, Onion-Bro, Big Hat Logan, that guy who nearly gets eaten by the Butchers and quite a few other NPC's you meet around Lordran go right off their rockers if certain things happen. Every Hollow you meet used to be someone until they went crazy.

But that brings me back to my topic- do you think Gravelord Nito is the only sane Lord left? All the others are fairly bonkers.

First we have Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight. He showed up and kicked some drconic butt during the whole Age of Fire thing. The Witch of Izalith, who started the whole pyromaniac thing. Gravelord Nito, who was the first dead person and killed the dragons with death. Seath the Scaleless, who turned traitor due to scale envy.
And some other guy that everyone forgets about and we never meet.
Oh and I suppose the Four Kings kinda count, since you have to kill them to feed that hungry Lord Vessel.

Then a few centuries down the track everyone seems to just go nuts. Gwyn does after he spends a few hundred years burning alive (can't really blame him for that, as it got so bad he's now been renamed as the Lord of Cinder. Ouch.) The Witch of Izalith tries to remake the First Flame and someone turns herself into some weirdass bug lurking under the Bed of Chaos. Seath looses it after reading too many small books and goes mad trying to figure out why he doesn't have scales (maybe it's a simple birth defect, Seath?) and turns nutters but does achieve his goal. The Four Kings get eaten by the Abyss and go crazy as a result. The whole of Lost Londo is flooded to keep it and the darkwraiths at bay, which doesn't really work.

Nito on the other hand seems to be the only Lord left who seems to have escaped the Crazy. He seems perfectly content to just chill in his sarcophagus. Interestingly, he's one of only two bosses that are placid when you first meet them- Crossbreed Priscilla just asks you to go away while Nito just sleeps in his coffin, so you can wander right up and pray to him if you want to become one of his groupies. (I haven't tries shooting him while he's sleeping, so I'm not sure if he wakes up to give you a hiding.)

Indeed he only turns hostile after you break through most of his house, kill loads of his kids (including the babies) and crash through his ceiling.

It's in my opinion Nito is the only Lord left who isn't insane, that he managed to escape going mad unlike the rest of his friends who slowly go bonkers, some due to their own incompetence, others due to outside forces.

What about you guys? Do you think Nito is in/sane? If so why or why not?

Yeah, that sounds like it has a bit of truth in it. What I don't understand is that, why, when he died. He felt the need to go and help kill the Dragons. That in itself seems a bit bonkers. I'd rather just sleep in my coffin. Deep underground, where it is so quiet. Ahhh.

Maybe he was getting pissed off that the Dragons weren't dying so decided to give them a hiding? I mean, the Dragons were named Everlasting, so they couldn't die, even if they got burned/lightning hurled at them, so maybe he figured them taunting death had gone on far enough so decided to give them a taste of it.

Well, he did go and sleep afterwards until the Chosen Undead breaks into his house.

I'm going to say no on this one because the Four Kings are not insane. They simply follow the wrong path in a lust for power and glory.
Wanting to become a divine being is not insane.

    Megalomania.

All jokes aside however, they did knowingly sign many people to death, by having their souls ripped from their bodies. As they were the aggressors, it's highly likely that they are/were sociopaths.

We don't have much to go on for their current mental state, after being sealed under a large lake for several hundred (?) years.

Maybe he actually has the best understanding or even intentional effect of the undead curse. Perhaps he has been pulling strings for a long time.

I think a better question for you to ask is this.

Is Nito what we would consider sentient, is Nito a single entity, a body, a mass of entities in one, etc? If you think about him mentally what is Nito.

But they are mad due to the Abyss, like Artorias- if you don't wear Artorias's ring when you jump into the Four Kings domain, you get swallowed by the Abyss.

I think he's one person, since he's the "First of the Undead" however he understands the whole concept and the dead.

Artorias was swallowed by Manus, Four Kings came around much after that. The Abyss could have weakened by then, and if they did fall prey to the abyss, it would be because of Kaathe not because of their own madness. Either that or Gwyn, he did give him a Shard of a Lord Soul for being such good commanders, after all.

Well, you get killed by the Abyss if you jump down, so it's still pretty active. It's kinda creepy getting swallowed by it.

Have to take off the ring mid fight, and you lose everything.
That's because you can't handle the abyss.
Artorias could, as could the Four Kings.

Well...they all went insane, so I don't think they handled it that well.

Interesting it could be that Nito is the only sane one left. Seeing as he is laid back most of the time until we finally attempt to kill him I could believe it.

At the same time we've also established that he is weak because that cult attempted to drain his energy. So it may also be possible that he is insane but just can't do anything because of past events.

Also as far as his actual psyche goes it's possible because that he is the first of the dead that he may already be used to Lordran and all of it's loneliness.

    Papa Nito loves you all.

Also, nito only attacks you because he knows you want his soul. Just self-preservation. The poor guy is so weak due to pinwheel's betrayal and stuff... Poor nito.

There is something i don't get...Pinwheel took some of his power...but when I battled him he was weak..i mean I finished him in 3 strikes on first PT....If he stole power from Nito, why is he so weak?

And yeah, Nito as dead as he is...he is indeed the sanest Lord! I mean he is just standing there doing the heck we know...not trying to take over the world or something "wild"!

Pinwheel is an optional first boss, he's not meant to be killed so late in the game.

Nito was also offering parts of his Lord Soul to death . From that, I gather he was slowly killing himself until he truly became dead, hence why he is so weak (added with that theiving Pinwheel.)

And as someone else mentioned, I guess being the First Undead he was a lot more used to loneliness and the dark than the other Lords who panicked when the Flame began to wane.

Unlike the other lords, nothing suggest that Nito was mad, insane or led astray.
He had merely become old and "useless". The only reason as to why he would attack the chosen undead, my opinion mind you, is for self-defense.

It is also likely that he mistakes the chosen undead for a member of the occult clan.

joking aside, that can make sense. Since "First of the Dead" does not imply anywhere in that title that it's one or many.
Just look at his/their "outfit" it's a shhht ton of skulls. It could've been a collective, who possibly shared one mind...like on some type of DMT revelation, and they became in sync with each other and the universe tongue
Yo DE5PA1R, what made you think of that hypothesis btw, or i guess I'm asking what your thoughts on that is.

On a side note, I always wanted to have Papa Nito's "costume", it would look so fuqn awesome. That and Priscilla's too. 8) along with her scales and tiny horns on her brow.

But i think Nito is a central giant skeleton, and the other smaller ones are just hanging from it.Can't you see his legs during the fight with him? Also when he dies you can briefly see the shadow of a single giant skeleton cast on the ground while his body is vanishing. Also his arms are that of a giant, rather than a mass of small bones, as it should be if he was just a concetration of corpses.

I'm of the opinion Nito is one but he is the voice of the Dead. He's the first undead and is thus the Patriarch for it and he understands the other dead yet he is unique and singular.

As his history isn't examined in detail, or even of any kind of importance (currently) in terms of accuracy, I like to think that Nito was originally alive, and when he claimed the lord soul of death he became the way he is.

So, he grabbed the power needed to fight the dragons, and in doing so damned himself to "life" as a skeleton.
