I've killed him with an unupgraded lightning spear.
Get right up close to him, spam R1, run away from charged up crystal attack, rinse repeat.

From what I've seen from my experiences with Seath, he appears to be weak to damage.

I've found lightning spears to be the easiest and safest method for killing him (at range).

If you don't need the tail, don't cut it. Just run up to him and hit him, when he charges an attack, run away, rinse repeat.

The easiest way to beat this boss is quite simple.
Stay mid range and wait for him to use his crystal attack. At that point, run up and melee him. Keep doing this until he does his melee attack, then simply step back to mid range and repeat.
If you're going for the tail, you have to cut off the middle tail.
To get it off, you have to cut the tip.
Should only take a few shots.

I found Seath incredibly easy to simply bash at when I finally gave up trying to get his tail. Basically you can forgoe anything special tactics and just smash him to death with whatever you got on hand.
I died more to those stupid Clam things outside his lair than I did to him.

Someone on this forum gave me great advice with his tail, just use a ring/spell that lets you run wthout making noise (using aural decoy as well helps) and just get behind him that way. Seath is blind afterall.
If you have a decent spell like soul spear you can get the tail off in 1 to 2 hits with manual aiming which is easier than it sounds when the tip of his middle tail is right in front of your face. I got it first time with this method.

I like how From actually put in that much detail. Only one item mentions Seath's blindness, but they still made it so he relies on sound when he fights.

You know that crystal armor you pick up before the Crystal Caves?
It's Heavy armor, yet makes no sound, which is extremely strange.
On that note, knowing how From Soft plans out the souls games, it's obvious that using the Crystal Armor during the fight makes it much easier.

He knows when you have entered the arena first time and every time after and moves towards you. Pretty sure if you're not doing anything he just stays in the one spot spamming his crystal AOE.

Seath really is a joke unless you're trying to cut off his tail. That took me a few tries. Pretty much what everyone else said is solid advice. I thought the Archives was fun.
