Dark Souls 2 actually a sequel?

Post by Sunbro1989 on Tue Apr 23, 2013 1:56 am

I wrote this article previewing the new gameplay footage of Dark Souls 2 and went into a lot of lore and story speculation. What do you think, could we visit multiple time periods in Dark Souls 2? Also how cool would it be to visit Astora during the Golden Age of Fire or wander the Great Swamp during the age of Darkness?

I was so close to write about why I think this is a Prequel rather then a Sequel, but I decided to read through your blog post, just in case.
You sure got some very interesting speculations going on. And I do like the thought of fighting an alternative version of you, as a Dark lord and shift between The age of fire and the age of man.

As to why I would speculate it to be a prequel, is solely because of the sky. The sky is yellow just about everywhere, just like it is in AOTA (which we all know happens in the latter glory days of the age fire).
But having more Dark lord time traveling is something I've not even considered.

Considering the time mechanic (confirmed; see ublug's very good screenshot analysis post), Dark Souls II may be a sequel AND a prequel to Dark Souls.

(I did read it, btw, just pressed for time.)

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks DSII will be a sequel. Here's my speculation concerning this from the recent trailers and the gameplay reveal:

    1. The 'dragons' in the gameplay reveal in the bridge area are wyverns, relatives to dragons with wyverns having only two legs instead of four.

    2. The dragon in the announcement trailer looks a little "decayed". If you look closely at the dragon's chest near the end, it looks like he has rotten flaps of "skin", making a hunch that it's a "zombie-ish" dragon, just with more flesh and maybe some revealed bone on his other side (trailer shows only his left side).

    3. Why is there an undead dragon and an army of wyverns roaming about? Well, if we were to back to the
    Spoiler:
The Painted World of one Zombie dragon, and I believe a certain half-dragon crossbreed might be causing all this...

I actually think its going to be irrelevant if it's a prequel or sequel. Because the location is technically the other side of the world to Lordran, the events there will probably have little to no effect on this new location.

The way I see it is that this new location is something that is told in legend, much like Lordran is told in legend. You hear of a far away land that has found a way to remove the curse of the undead and so you go there, much like traveling to Lordran to ring the bell of awakening because you're the chosen undead shabiz.

I think the connection between both games is going to very loose so the timeline to the first game isn't going to matter, which I'm really hoping for because I don't want Dark Souls to suffer like most sequels where developers just exhaust the core story by adding extensions and giving it a slow death.

it would be awesome if you played in the southern undead asylum and had to go out a different way, but on your way out you could hear faint whispers of oscar telling the chosen undead what he must to. then going to do your mission.

i want it to link to dark souls, but in an indirect way. whispers, "maybe" appearances, a possible reference.

Hmmm...You have a point. But if this would take place in the same world as Dark Souls just far away from Lordran, wouldn't some of the events of the 1st effect the second in some way? I mean, Dragons and wyverns have wings for a reason, don't they? tongue

Both games can be completely independent from each other so no the events of the first game will probably have no effect on the second game. Dragons and wyverns do not have to be specifically tied to DkS1. The war against the dragons happened a very long time ago to the events of DkS1, much can happen elsewhere between those two periods.

I still think that Dark Souls II will be connected to the first one in some way. Like Kiln of The First Flame? You can't ignore something as big as that. Isn't The First Flame connected to Life, Death, Heat, Cold, Light and Dark in the Dark Souls world? If it's never mentioned or opted out in DSII, the devs better explain something BIGGER than The First Flame in the sequel.
