I was playing earlier today, and I realized something strange. Every NPC that you encounter in the game eventually turns hollow and tries to kill you. However, for some reason Quelanna and Petrus are the only main NPCs that never go hollow. Does anyone know of anything that could explain this?
My thought is that Petrus is the way into the way of the white Covenant, so he cant go hollow from a gameplay perspective rather than lore. Quelanna however is more challanging. My theory is that she is not actually there. When you first meet her she is astounded that you can see her, implying that she is not corporeal. I believe that she is a type of spirit from the past, though I have nothing significant to back up this theory.

Petrus is a lying coward. He didn't go hollow because he did not care to travel with the girl he hated and her clerics. He kills her if you don't do something in the game as if you kill him you find a talisman only the girl had. My view is that the rite of kindling is not important as living to him. Quellana is harder but she is a daughter of chaos and taught pyromacy to a well known man to pryomancers who names escapes me. For me she learned how to survive the life of the undead through her vast knowledge and pryomancy powers. I think she is there it is just that you have enough sanity to see her as a person.

Petrus' other aspect is that he is "triggered" in to killing Rhea if the player fails to save her at soon point. (conditions escape me at this point).

Quelanna, will go hollow and attempt to kill the player at some point as well. Again, the conditions escape me and (for me) this has happened only once during my entire game play.

Your question about player being able to see her (as stated by her) is an interesting one, indeed. happy

Quelana is a charmer, the idea is that only by being strong enough in pyromancy you can resist the charm and actually see her, this also tells her you are worth teaching.

She doesn't go hollow because she is fine with her current state of being, she focused on her own life over staying in Izalith.

The hollow witch robed figure is another character, an enemy character. After killing them Quelana will stay.

Petrus cares far too much about his own hide to go hollow over anything. Patches is similar, he also does not go hollow under any conditions.

Quelana taught Salaman the secrets of pyromancy and now she views the undead as a second Salaman. I think it is almost like a motherly tenderness, or the affection that a master has for their favorite pupil, that keeps Quelana sane.

Excellent Tolvo! I stand corrected. Thanks!! happy

But it wasn't the pryomancer/witch(?) by the fog gate that I was referring to. My brain was obviously "offline". And much to my embarrassmento...once, I read your post I realized it was the only time I, in the whole time playing this game, struck her by accident. straight face

You are correct about Petrus. LOL
Which is why I kill him as soon as I no longer have use of him. silly

    For Petrus:

The Church does not like Undead, so maybe he was sent there to make sure nobody ever gets the Rite of Kindling.

Yup, Petrus is a healthy human who kills undead for the church to keep Undead from being in the Church.

For Queelana, I doubt she is undead, she was around before the curse existed.

Actually Salaman was Quelana's pupil. Carmina was Salaman's pupil. See flash sweat description:

"Pyromancy of Carmina, who harnessed the power of flame to actualize the inner-self. Intense sweating reduces flame damage.
Carmina, the most accomplished pupil of Salaman the Master Pyromancer, pioneered new directions for the art of pyromancy."

The Church doesn't explicitly hate undead at the cost of everything else. The one bit of evidence is that they "hunt undead," but there is no context for that; it is likely hollows they hunt more, though they may ship others to the North.

They sent their first undead on a mission with their most sacred mission. Doesn't seem like a hate thing to me.

Though, now that I think about it, could whats-his-name have been the church's attempt at linking the fire?

Quelana likely isn't Undead. Also she has Undead Rapport, which allows her to make friends with what would normally be enemies. I think when she says she's surprised that you can see her, she's referring to the fact that she cast a Pyromancy similar to Undead Rapport on the ground where she sits. This would explain the no-aggro area there. Maybe that makes you/her invisible to an attacker.

Don't forget Patches in your list. It seems the more dishonest your intentions, the less likely it is you'll go Hollow.

No-agro area? So I don't constantly get harassed by mosquitoes and boulder giants there? Must be my imagination then.

To me it seems hollowing is caused by despair. If you don't have anything causing you despair, then you're not likely to hollow. Jerks like Petrus and Patches didn't seem to have anything causing them despair, because the only things they cared about were hating Reah and collecting trinkets. Quelana probably was just too optimistic to experience despair, or something like that.

Ha! Bit of a back-handed compliment. Not to the best of my knowledge, no.

The Crestfallen Merchant dialogue hints that hollowing doesn't have much to do with me. Or despair. Whatever.

Hollowfication is predictable is what I'm saying.

i believe that these characters do not go hollow as they have a purpose or intention with their life. take siegmeyer, he will eventually hollow if you constantly save him purely because he feels he has no prpose in life. and rhea also goes hollow after you purchase everything from her that she can teach you. she has no purpose as she has taught you everything she knows and that is why she goes to the dukes archives. here she tries to learn new spells but she encounters the same problems that both seath and logan come across yet she is not nearly as strong willed as those two. this makes her feel so inept that she turns hollow.
its all about lack of purpose. petrus and patches both have reasons to still be around, they feel as if they have a purpose but once a person no longer FEELS that they have a purpose they hollow. even if they do it is all about the will of the mind.
just my take on it if anyones interested. i purposefully killed siegmeier outside the gates of sens fortress to save him the distress that would follow if i were to continuously save him.

also quelana was constantly kept alive by quelaag and did not wish to dishearten quelaag and so made an effort to stay alive for her sisters sake. when she learns of her sisters death this instantly demoralises her and she sees very little point to not hollow, yet if you join the covenant and speak with her, you are now the reason for her to not hollow and you give her a purpose and a will to live. teaching you and accepting your kindness (in the form of you healing her) is her purpose and it is you that gives her the will and determination to live, yet you leaving the covenant and not returning is what will cause quelana to hollow.

she has lost all will and purpose and now has no choice but to hollow. its very sad the more you think about it but i cannot bring myself to kill her to end the pain and suffering that she might go through.

My use of the term 'despair' was not a poke at your name Whats so special about Petrus and Quellana? Shifty

Well, I'm just basing it on how most NPCs hollowed. Laurentius went searching for Quelana but could never find her. Reah lost Vince and Nico, blames herself, then gets captured by Seath's minions and rots away in a cell. Siegmeyer values his knighthood greatly, but he ends up constantly being saved by the chosen undead and never manages to return the favour. Judging from his dialogue, Crestfallen Warrior doesn't exactly have any hope left either. Griggs hollows after constantly failing to track down Logan. Oscar hollows after failing to become the chosen undead. I believe all of these things are likely to cause one despair.
