The elevator is not the shortcut you can access when you are in that covenant, it's the big door that is located near the entrance to Firesage Demon's arena, so I am pretty sure that you need to acquire the Lordvessel first.

I don't know if this is still relevant but you do need the lord vessel first then you have to go through the ruins and activate it from the other side I think. Either that or mine bugged.

I'm an avid Chaos Servant guys and what you got to do is be rank +2 in the service of our Fair Lady as well have the Lord Vessel. The door in the Demon Ruins is sealed with a golden barrier unless you have the vessel. You do not have to defeat the Demon Fire Sage to access the short cut but you do have to if you want to activate that elevator. Also if you want to save Solaire makes sure you kill all the bugs and get the Sunlight Maggot before you cross into Izalith.

You only need the lordvessel. Place it, then go to the ruins. before fighting the firesage demon, take a right and go down the root, there will be a big door. If you're +2 in the covenant, you'll be able to open it.

Another confusing part of the game. Good thing there is a community and wiki to lead and guide.
