Do you guys think it's better for :dung: and giggles or to scare the living crap out of others? Mainly for movies, do you think it adds 'substance' to the movie?

I for one have this love/hate relationship with jumps scares.
Mostly because i'm a freaking wuss. I get scared easily.
I love horror movies and such but they scare the living crap out of me.
I swear that my heart skips a beat each time it happens.

    What about you guys?

I hate jump scares in games. in films, they are alright, but in games, they are hardly ever a surprise, and they lose all effect on any additional playthrough, during which the generally unavoidable nature of a jump scare will just piss me off.

    ^ That

I'll admit that every now and then I'll forget one or two jump scares in a Dead Space game but of course, really lose their effect later on. Jump scares are really a kinda 'I'll get you this one time if I'm lucky, but never again' deal.

I want more 'suspenseful' scary, like the original Alien movie. bounce

Pretty much when something has a jumpscare I instantly lose all respect for it, it's why I consider horror films to be in a sort of dark ages currently due to their heavy reliance on jump scares. And I'm not talking about, "Tons of suspense build up, you hear the noise, turn around and oh god he's standing right there!"

I mean, "We're in darkness without much noise, and suddenly GIANT SCARY FACE FLYING AT THE SCREEN MAKING A REALLY *** LOUD NOISE!"

It instantly tells me that the creator ran out of material or had no clue how to actually write horror.

^Sorry but Dead Space series was pretty boring. Loved the story and gameplay but the scares just didn't make the cut for my tastes.

The halon gas going off in 2, you're expecting a monster to jump out then the gas goes off and you sh1t yourself, they seemed to time it to when you just let your guard down, same with the return to the Ishimura. If its done well they're great.

i dunno i guess someone out there likes them since they're still making money.

i don't like them tho. used to throw punches or push the moment i got shocked. don't do it anymore tho after i drilled that coat hanger hook.. just kind of flail my arm out and remember what happened last time.

comes in handy for fps video games tho since i auto attack with some pretty crazy aim if the characters still alive... friend or foe leaves some to be desired tho.

I totally punch things that startle me. Tagged a clown in a haunted house once.

Anyways, I don't like them. Suspense is great if its done right (I have to care about the survival of the character though, making it easier to do in games as I lose progress if I die) but "jump scares" aren't entertaining. They're the QTEs of horror.

Jump scares in games make it hard to focus, it doesn't help when you can't feel anything with your hands

And it's useless to have scripted jump scares in games, because you'll eventually memorize each of them, i like Minecraft's system much better, when an arrow hits you from the dark, that never gets old

Done right: Stair scene and near subliminal faces in The Exorcist

Not done right: Most other instances. I agree with Tolvo. There should be some sort of build up with the scare being a when not a complete reveal all at once. Looking at you paranormal activity movies.....

But not for long, they're not very good

I've never found the Dead Space series particularly scary either, but I do love the games. The original is probably my favorite game this generation.

I like psychological horror and horror induced by fear of failure.

I consider the old Castlevania's to be horror games. Many people would say I'm crazy for this but truust me if you are playing on the NES, And if you lose to dracula you will start the entire level over, you will be terrified of losing. The old games actually played into people's fear of failure.

After about 4 hours, your mom would tell you to put the game up and back then if you turned off your console you had to start over.

I did feel that way about deadspace. If you stop and think of it as a game you might get bored of the jump scare. But I took that game as an experience and it was really scary. I'm talking about just the 1, didn't play the other 2. But I can assure you, I didn't run in the game for a very long time because I was afraid of what would come in the next corner. Then slowly you start to gain courage and you become more daring in the environment. That why I feel it hold its end when it come to atmosphere.

Jump scares in youtube videos are easy to see coming and it's because of that they aren't scary.

In movies they are alright until used to much, after that it becomes annoying and not very scary. Not to mention if you don't play the atmosphere right the jump scare might not work at all.

In videogames it's only worked once, in Dead Space. At the very beginning of the game you are actually given a very unnerving feeling every time you go around a corner, but it wears out relatively fast. I think it was after the second mission they wore off and I wasn't even startled when they went around a corner. So I really think the videogame needs to be kind of short in order for a jump scare to work, unless you're able to develop a formula that works with the jumpscares.

    Stalker games are pretty scary

But really, you shouldn't disregard Minecraft, as inoffensive as it looks, sudden, really loud sounds, coupled with the fear of losing your stuff is pretty unsettling too

I remember watching the Woman in Black in the cinema on the week it was released with 2 of my mates as it had Daniel Radcliffe starring and we knew it was gonna be ****. The only time people screamed or got scared during that movie was jump scares which says a lot about the film.
