I personally think it is very exciting that Dark Souls could have the potential to become the first video game that could develop a cult homosexual following. Im heterosexual myself, but i still love the playful homo-erotic side of the game and community. It feels like being part of a wider celebration of freedom of expression and being liberated to be whoever you want to be - which is something that all people can celebrate, regardless of sexual orientation or anything else. Thoughts?

How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
I posted this question a year or so ago - and thought it would be time to revisit the topic. I noticed as i played the raw game that it had a very subtle homo-erotic feel about it. I couldnt quite pin it down. But the PVP and communitity videos have helped to amplify this feeling. Many of the fan videos are very entertaining, and for me the most entertaining ones are often the most camp.

Re: How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
To be honest, I don't see how Dark Souls has such a following, but I believe anyone different, in any form at all deserves their own opinion and thoughts. Feeling free to do as you please to me is just human rights, it sickens me to see people being put down, or told that they can't do something because they are different to them.

Thanks Renegade. We are totally aligned on sentiment even if we see it slightly differently. Whether or not Dark Souls is homo-erotic -i guess my point is that it allows for interpretation on lots of different levels and encourages is community to celebrate freedom of expression and freedom of thinking. like you, I wish real life was more like that sometimes.....

Re: How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
I have seen and experienced too much cruelty to just simply watch things such as abuse happen to a lot of people. And no problem, just stating my honest opinion on what humanity should truly be like, and by that, I mean stop antagonising each other for differences. But, I could not agree more on that I also wish the real world, and more people shared my belief of everyone having equal rights. And, I can see your point now, thanks for the clarification.

I don't really see this trend either, though like Renegade, I say you are allowed to your opinion. That said, I want to dismiss what I can lol.
I can really only think of a few examples of erotic/possibly-sexual at all that exist in DkS.
Izalith has children, 7 daughters and 1 son. To have these children was either relations with a man, many men, or some magical asexual process.
Gwyn has children. Excluding Solaire from this category, because not every one believes him to be Gwyn's son, the oldest child was known as a god of war. Then there's Gwynevere, who is practically a fertility goddess. Lastly is Gwyndolin who one could say is effeminate, but that is because he was raised as a woman. I'm not fully discounting this one, but I also can't see it as flat out meaning he is straight or ***. Don't forget however that the DMKnightness seems to have a thing for him.
Solaire - A lot of people have questioned Solaire's orientation due to his dialogue in Anor Londo. However, they forget that he says the exact same thing if you are playing a female character. On top of that, it's always given me the impression that he is making fun of you, the player.
S&O - Aside from being included in a fight together, I do not see at all what is supposed to make these two in a relationship. I've seen this suggested multiple times, and have always been confused by it. They are some of the last remaining AL warriors, and are waiting to team up and stop the Dark Lord from reaching Gwynevere...
Artorias and Sif - Sif is a girl but, more importantly, she's a WOLF. Besides, it is Ciaran and Sif that get the hint of a relationship.

She? is there any proof that Sif would be a girl? I've always seen him/her as a male.

Sif is the name of someone in Viking mythology (I can't remember who she had relations to), and Sif was female, in that case.

I think it would be hard to tell because From wouldn't go into that type of detail on Sif.

Re: How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
Sif is Thor's wife. Goddess associated with some motherly things which is a reoccurring theme in the game. There's no proof but the name and associated themes are the only evidence toward gender whatsoever so some of us lore nuts assume she is a she.
On topic, I don't see a whole lot of sexuality in game but as anyone who has spent more thanfive minutes in the archives section knows, it's all open to interpretation.
It certainly doesn't discriminate though. I mean, Gwyndolin is certainly open to interpretation. And o mean that seriously. Is he a tragic figure of child abuse? A champion of living within your own self perception?

None taken. I think it's a pretty weird topic too. Honestly, apart from Solaire's comment (which he uses regardless of gender anyway) I don't see how anything in this game or it's community can be seen as homo-erotic. Not discriminating people with a different sexuality is not the same as homo-erotic, btw.

Re: How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
I don't see it either. However I do think the developers did a amazing job of not putting anything that discriminates against gender, race or different cultures even by interpretations. I can't find anything that shows any discrimination in this game.Elifia wrote: None taken. I think it's a pretty weird topic too. Neither could I Soris. Maybe that is what made the assumption of a homo-erotic following appear.

Re: How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
So just to clarify my viewpoint on this. The thread title is actually a question and I am not definitively stating at all that I believe that Dark Souls is intentionally homo erotic. But what I'm getting at is that it could be interpreted this way, and if so, this could again make it a ground breaking game in the sense that it could reach a new community and become iconic in the way that the legendary movie Wizard of Oz did so long ago. Dark Souls means a lot of different things to different people, even within the hardcore fan community on this forum. That much is obvious. Can Dark Souls be the video game equivalent of the Wizard of Oz? Or Is my imagination getting away with me. You decide!

Re: How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
Apart from Solaire's dialogue in Anor Londo (which I wouldn't count as it is the same whether you are playing a male or female character) are there any things (dialogue, descriptions, etc) that can be interpreted as homo-erotic?
Honest question.

Re: How homo-erotic is Dark Souls?
Other than our bromance with Solaire, I can't see it either. It's just a game community like any other, all manner of people are in it.
Also, there is no proof that Sif is female. But there is no proof for really anything in this goddamn game, so I can't really critize people for saying Sif is female.

For something to amass a ***, cult following, it needs to actually do something that is of particular interest to some aspect of the LGBT community.
You'd have to really dig into the game and make some huge leaps and stretches to argue that something within it is 'homo erotic'. And because of that, nothing in the game is significantly 'homo erotic'. Therefore all the things like uncertainty over Solaire's dialog, etc, are insignificant footnotes in the end. What matters is if the game has strong "***" themes within it, and it doesn't.
Even Gwyndolin probably wouldn't be of particular interest to the LGBT community. There have already been a lot of Japanese games with super androgynous characters, transgendered characters, or character-is-the-opposite-sex-of-what-you-think characters... so there's nothing groundbreaking here. Gywndolin's backstory doesn't have a prominent enough role in Dark Souls for that to be of interest-- at least not on the level of creating a *** cult following specific to Dark Souls.
