I mean we know why Seath has one. He was granted it by Gwyn. Nito had his own, so did the Sisters of Chaos. But.. why were the Four Kings in possession of one? Why would Gwyn grant them a Lord Soul?

It's just a shard of a lord soul; I think because originally they were good and wise and so gwyn rewarded them when he left to link the flames.

Probably... He did divide his soul before going to kindle the fire, so they had to have gotten their hands on it somehow.

Before Gwyn left to link the flame he split up his Lord Soul. He did this because where he was going he had no need of such power. A shard of it was given to the Four Kings 'as Gwyn saw promise in them' and as they were leaders of a powerful place at the time. Gwyn had fragmented his Lord Soul many times. I also believe he gave part of his souls to Orstein.

He saw the King's as being wise and good. He gave them the soul before they fell to the Abyss.

I thought Gwyn only bequeathed some of his soul to the Four Kings, and Seath's was just ridiculously powerful in it's own right? Then again giving part of the soul still leaves it powerful - Nito gave over most of his to the power of death and still had plenty left over...

Seath got part of Gwyn's soul, he never found his own Soul.

Just goes to show Gwyn was a bad judge of character.

True. He orchestrated an elaborately brilliant plan to get an heir:
He reasoned it would need to be someone strong enough to get to both bells.
He wanted it to be an undead, as they would likely be ignorant of his scheme and willing to listen to his co-conspirators Frampt and Gwyndolin (through Gwynevere). An undead would also be without hope for any other alternative in life other than to end their curse.
He would arrange it so they:
kill off Nito - a potential rival and blight on the land;
kill off Seath - an embarassing choice of ally and unco-operative serial kidnapper (and murderer);
kill off the Four Kings - other potential contenders for his throne (he probably expected them to fall from grace)
kill off the Bed of Chaos - a problem in its own right and threat to his realm
kill off Ornstein and Smough - so that they could never have time to doubt his schemes
And finally kill him so that they would never suspect it was his intent to WANT you to link the flame - and deny the Age of Man.
Gwyn is not a wise man at all. Clever, but not wise. You're basically set up to clean up his entire mess of a reign.

A clever conspiration, indeed. But as we know far apart from being wise. The great lord Gwyn used up all his energy to maintain the first flame. How long is a commoner, even one who bested the greatest villains, supposed to make it in the kiln, before the flame dies out again? Not infinitely, for sure. From my perspective he bought some time he will not be able to use anymore. Who is to succeed after the chosen undead? Who will set up a plot to form a new heir?
Thinking about that, i come to the conclusion, that it was not Gwyn's plan at all. He was used as is the chosen undead. But there's one, well hidden in a tomb in Anor Londo. The last remaining deity and the only one who has an interest in the prolonging of the Age of Fire: Gwyndolin

Read the description of the Lord Soul you get from the Four Kings.

Awww.....I was gonna say that Djem!
Oh well, here it is:
"Soul of one of the Four Kings, who fell to Dark. A fragment of a Lord Souls discovered at the dawn of the Age of Fire.
Lord Gwyn recognized the foresight of these four great leaders of New Londo, and granted them their ranks and the fragments of a great soul. Although this is not a full Lord Soul, it can still satiate the Lord Vessel."

Also notice how it is said "Soul of one of the Four Kings" , and you can fight during the boss battle more or less than four of Kings, and they all look the same.
A member of the community, whose name I can't remember exactly, had an AMAZING theory that the Four Kings boss battle is actually a fight against Artorias himself. And the theory could still be applied even after the DLC.
Whatever happened to that guy, he used to frequent the Archives...
